Two Navy SEALs missing after Thursday night mission off Somalian coast

By Lolita C. Baldor and Tara Copp

WASHINGTON — Two U.S. Navy SEALs are missing after conducting a nighttime boarding mission Thursday off the coast of Somalia, according to three U.S. officials.

The SEALs were on an interdiction mission, climbing up a vessel when one got knocked off by high waves. Under their protocol, when one SEAL is overtaken the next jumps in after them.

Both SEALs are still missing. A search and rescue mission is underway and the waters in the Gulf of Aden, where they were operating, are warm, two of the U.S. officials said.

The U.S. Navy has conducted regular interdiction missions, where they have intercepted weapons on ships that were bound for Houthi-controlled Yemen.

We caught wind of this before the news cycle picked it up. I was hoping for some better news by this time.

Hate to hear this. That must have been some serious chop if two frogs are missing. Hoping they survive the sea.

Not even close to the level of difficulty but stepping off a 40’ liberty boat at night in choppy seas to bottom of the brow landing can be dicey. Now add the ship moving, loaded with gear, possible hostiles waiting for you is a danger I cannot imagine. If you fall in/off, you’re getting beat up by the wake, getting bounced off the hull, and then the darkness of the seas at night only the best of the best of the best could survive. In know our SEALs are as good as they get, but I hope it wasn’t too much for them to overcome.

I watched Chadd Wright’s video on this early this morning: Navy SEAL’s Missing Off Coast Of Somalia | What Might Have Happened (youtube.com)

Our Story – 3 of 7 Project

Hoping for the best, but it’s doubtful that the news update will be positive. I can talk smack about the Navy, and particularly SEALs, all day, but that doesn’t change the fact that these were part of a very select and elite group of Sailors who regularly put their lives on the line for our nation.

We’ve seen both training and real-world missions go awry over the years, and it’s never a good thing when we lose anyone to accidents, negligence, and elements. Again, hopefully those two are found safe. If not, hopefully they are at least recovered and provided proper honors.

“…when one SEAL is overtaken the next jumps in after them.”

And that’s what it’s all about. Hardcore. Look after your Buddy…and your Buddy’s Buddy. People that have never served can’t understand and/or relate to that.

Lord, protect them for they are so small and Your ocean is so big.

Pray for the best but expect the worst. Five (5) days is a long time to have to dog paddle.

If anyone can survive those conditions, it’s SEALs, but sadly, I have to agree, it’s not looking good.. I hope I’m wrong..

Prayers up to these brave men and their families

Do they wear inflatable PFD’s?

MIRanger

Well, you still have to climb the lander, even if the first guy does this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suHOLFhbwsM

Wonder how long it takes to swim to shore? Hopefully we will hear from them in a week or so…and they will have a cool survival story to sell!

That’s my thinking, too. Watch them show up with a pirate boat and shark chum all over the place.

In my thoughts.

Stay strong.

I pray they will be found and reunited safely with their loved ones and their Team.

The SEALs were on an operation in the Gulf of Aden to interdict a ship carrying Iranian missile parts to the Houthi rebels.
As of yet, there is no news update on the sailors. The water in the Gulf is warm and they are paired together, so they might make it if found.

Very late post here but this has been eating at me for a few days… Standard VBSS Ops is that you launch from the ship with close air support from attached helo for the very reasons in this incident. With the absence of any of these assets mentioned and further lack of information makes me believe that this was truly 100% covert ops and the team was launched from a submarine with no backup – operating totally alone. I am sure there is more to the story and the photo they circulated of a Dawo (crappy ship) is a little suspect – unless they had specific intel those are small and difficult to find in open water. Darkness and heavy seas I am sure they had to make a go no go call… AW1 is correct there is a small flotation device used but with all the gear and depending on injuries and the ability to shed gear quickly – darkness, 7-8 foot seas even for the frogs that is a tough situation.
