Sorry media, the US military is not full of violent extremists
The Pentagon commissioned a report in 2021 aimed at addressing violent extremism within the ranks. The results have been released but the media did not give it as much attention as it could have provided. The report concluded that the ranks are not jam-packed with violent extremists, that there was no “disproportionate number of extremists” in the ranks.
From the Wall Street Journal:
After reports that some service members participated in the Jan. 6 riot, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered an independent study to get “greater fidelity” on extremism in the ranks. The think tank tasked with the report, the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), “found no evidence that the number of violent extremists in the military is disproportionate” to U.S. society. A review of Pentagon data suggested “fewer than 100 substantiated cases per year of extremist activity by members of the military in recent years,” the report says.
That figure could include a range of conduct and ideological bent, not simply the white supremacy floated in the press. Take court martials. Researchers found that “the prevalence of extremist and gang-related activity that are reflected in court-martial opinions is limited to fewer than 20 cases” since 2012. Gang activity isn’t typically political and, excluding those cases, the number falls to one a year.
One useful conclusion is that the military doesn’t need a new section of the Uniform Code of Military Justice to punish what few “extremist” criminal cases exist. Researchers note that commanders can rely on Article 116 (riot or breach of peace); Article 88 (contempt toward officials); Article 109 (destruction or damage to property); Article 115 (communication of threats), among others such as assault.
Even the Jan. 6 story isn’t what you’ve heard. IDA found that “of the more than 700 federal cases in which charges were publicly available a year after these events, fewer than ten” were in the military at the time. There’s “no evidence that service members were charged at a different rate than the members of the general population.” The picture changes when veterans are included, though the Pentagon doesn’t command former service members who are civilians.
The Wall Street Journal provides additional information here. In case you do not have access to the Wall Street Journal, USA Today addresses the story. Thanks to Anonymous for another route to this report.

More taxpayer money well spent.
I’m more concerned about extremists in the media than the military. MSNBC, CNN etc literally suffer from TDS 24/7. They are willing to do literally anything and everything to keep FJB in office.
All the ABC lamestream media stations, ABC CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC and FOX which is slowly on the way are left leaning socialists. When I turn on the Florida ABC news at 5PM, I only listen to the local Florida news and any political stuff that comes on, It goes on mute or I turn the TV off.
Our military needs to be extremely violent towards our enemies…both foreign and domestic.
“both foreign and democrat.”
Extremists in the military? Nahhh…
Shhh. That kind of extremism isn’t reportable, except here or Libs of TikTok…
Please, tell me something that I don’t already know.
Has there ever been a worse gruesome-twosome than Milley & Austin at the top of the military hierarchy? You need that Col. from USSF to add to the menagerie of idiots.
This is why the terrorists win.
Yep…I knew it was gonna be mostly us extreemist Veterans.
Unsurprisingly the USA Today story takes a slightly different tone than the WSJ article.
“The report says extremism appears to be becoming more common in the military”
Somewhat different take than the WSJ…but USA Today tends towards a more mainstream view that the military is filled with half-crazed steely eyed killers just waiting to explode into violent action. The thanks of a grateful nation indeed.
I was half-crazed before I enlisted.
Testosterone in massive quantities in young males has a tendency to present in such a fashion.
Well, somebody knows where all the extremest are hiding in the military, I’m sure it will only take a few more years and several congressional investigations to find them.
So, of the 20 Courts Martial they were because of ” Gang Activity” only a single ONE was determined to be because of political ideology ( extremism?). I’m guessing the other gang related CMs were to those pesky Amish Gangs…
Well, not until some goofus in authority decides to once again officially label *GASP!* White Christian Men as “extremist”.
Haven’t they already done that? Mikey Weinstein said so.

An article written by someone with almost enough military knowledge to know the difference between a gig line and a flight line.
I served with two guys, that I remember, that had confederate flag tattoos. They were good Soldiers and honorable, as far as I know!
I wonder where they fall in this “investigation”
I don’t know why they had those tattoos. I only assume it was a regional thing, young and dumb, whatever! They weren’t bad guys and they got along with EVERYONE! I have a hard time believing that they were extremists. If they were, they sucked at it!
