Code for gun retailers allows credit cards to track gun purchases

| March 2, 2023

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approved a dedicated code for gun retailers. The new code that would be used is “5723 – Gun and ammunition shops.” The use of this code is up to the merchants. Discover announced that it would use this code; however, they specified that they would continue to support lawful purchases.

From Reuters:

Discover’s announcement came after the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which decides on the classification of merchant categories used by payment cards, approved in September the launch of a dedicated code for gun retailers.

Proponents of the move, including gun control activists and Democratic politicians, say it will allow financial institutions to better assist authorities in investigating crimes involving gun violence in the United States.

While the codes will not show specific items purchased, some Republican politicians have spoken out against the move, arguing it could violate the privacy of U.S. citizens lawfully buying guns.

Discover said it will include the new code in its next policy and product update to merchants and payment partners in April.

“We remain focused on continuing to protect and support lawful purchases on our network while protecting the privacy of cardholders,” Discover said in its statement to Reuters.

Reuters and Breitbart provide additional information on the story.

Discover talks out both sides of its mouth to maximize $$$.

Cash it is then.
Or I’ll use a card that doesn’t do this. Or a check.

Graybeard

The banks might be doing something similar…
Cash is good.

Will the See Eye Eh, F*** Be LiE, AFT, Dee oh Duh, USAID(S), etc be following the same so next time they; set up a citizen, run guns to/for a cartel or international terrorist org, or ‘accidentally’ misplace a few billion in weapons; We, the People, will have a good record of who purchased these items?

Because THAT is how you get me the fuck on board with bullshit like this.

I expect many Discover Cards will soon be food for the shredder.

Another method to have more control over We, The People. My local toy store will take my check…and gives a discount for using a check…gives a bigger discount for using green money.

Sure, most Plastic Purveyors charge a percentage to use their product.
So stores save bucks when plastic is NOT used (and hassle, and “paperwork”).

Never had one of those Discover Cards. It seems like just the other day they were cutting off Kyle Rittenhouse and helping finance left wing terror groups.

All credit card companies will have this eventually. The Gov NY has been campaigning for it for a while. The Swiss approved it last year, just waiting on everyone else to adopt it.

I miss the NRA Visa card. Nothing like getting free ammo every once in a while on points. Democrats ruin everything.

Last Handgun I bought was the Springfield XDe, 9MM which I paid in cash a couple of years ago.got my first credit card back in 1993. Up till 1993, all the firearms I bought were paid for in cash. when the folks moved to Florida and my co-worker said to get the card because when flying, it’s easier to use a card. Forgot if the airlines accepted cash or not.

Smitty

My ole man taught me, only use a credit card for hotels and airlines. I’m amazed by young people who buy a cup of coffee and charge it. Wonder if they realize how much interest they’re paying on that balance. The big banks rely on the stupidity of these people to make huge profits.

JustALurkinAround

I agree, Smitty, even though I use my credit card for every purchase.

I do this for three reasons:

1. I hoard cash.
2. My interest rate is 0.0% because I pay the balance in full every month.
3. I earn and use a shitload of Delta miles.

5JC

Ditto, except for Delta. I haven’t paid for a US hotel room in about 15 years and I travel a fair amount. I get 5% off on all of my gas and groceries and a lot more on other things. Even my worst rebate is 1.5% if I can’t find any card that will work. 10% on utilities, streaming services… it’s real money.

By having a high credit score it keeps my interest rate low for when I do buy real estate or sometimes a car, although the last few vehicles I paid cash for, because the rates were ridiculous.

JustALurkinAround

Agree, 5JC. I guard my credit score like my family.

IIRC TX has passed legislation preventing banks doing business in the state from participating in that left handed registration scheme.
