Female Soldiers Twice as Likely to Be Diagnosed with Mental Health Conditions in Theater Than Males, Study Finds

By Patricia Kime

Female U.S. Army soldiers were diagnosed with a mental health condition at more than twice the rate of male troops while deployed to a combat theater, and they exceeded the rate for males for all 12 of the mental health categories examined, a new study has found.

From 2008 to 2013 — a period selected for the study because of its high operations tempo — female troops who were deployed “consistently had higher rates than their male counterparts” for mental health diagnoses that included stress and adjustment disorders, depression, anxiety, sleep issues and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, according to the research, published Wednesday by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Division.

The authors theorized that their findings may indicate that deployed female soldiers may actually have more mental health problems than males, with the effects of combat, family separation, sexual assault or harassment playing more of a role.

But they also said health care providers may be more likely to diagnose a female service member with a psychiatric disorder as a result of sex-based biases.

Department of Veterans Affairs considers these as pre-existing conditions and ineligible for service-connected disability compensation.

Just one of several things that us neanderthals said would be the result of having women in the deployed ranks.

Could it just possibly be that men and women have differences that evolved over the aeons?

Let’s see how the “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” Nazis spin this one…..

No spin necessary, it will get a minor mention and promptly be buried in the news feed.

Mike

To the extent that it is not completely buried it will be blamed on “a pervasive climate of sexual assault and harassment.”

We’ll find out after a 2 gorrilion dollar study, much Sunday “news show” clucking by the usual suspects, congress harpies wailing in front of cameras from our house, at least a platoon of planted DNC bots come forward about how their command allowed them to get inebriated in the Bs and do some stuff on camera, accidentally, a dozen times or so… each.

Basically batten all the hatches, a wall of self-pity tears will wash over this land in a great flood and the last bit of semi-autonomy over itself will be gone for our Warrior class.

I can’t wait for the political officers to actually wear red collar points, as they want to do.

A Thread Post on this subject is living proof that our Beloved Kid Squid (ht2 Ol’ Poe) ain’t skeered of getting his goose cooked and will fly right into that danger zone. I’m telling you, da boy’s blood is nothing but ice, man. This could get veeeerry interesting. What say you, Farm Girl, Friend, ninja, OAM??? Inquiring minds want to know.

“…health care providers may be more likely to diagnose a female service member with a psychiatric disorder as a result of sex-based biases.” Hell, they ain’t the only ones. To quote Sheldon Lee Cooper’s Mailman; “Bitches be crazy, Dawg”

YMMV

As for me…I Salute anyone that takes the Oath and does their duty in all things.

Amen on what you wrote:

“As for me…I Salute anyone that takes the Oath and does their duty in all things.”

We are STILL trying to figure out the purpose of that study.

Since they are on a roll and want to be “diversed”, let’s do a study on the different races/ethnic groups when it comes to mental health in theater.

Ooops…forgot to mention the Alphabet group../sarc

And the rank structure…Enlisted/NCO/Officers..

Let’s see now. While in the sandbox, we had one SSG Black Male Soldier who put a gun to his head. One Black Female Major who put a gun to her head. One Hispanic Male LTC who put a gun to his head. One Female Hispanic E4 who shot herself in the stomach…and died. One White Male LTC who put a gun to his head…

Smart is no Nick Saban but he is from Alabama, so he is as close to perfect as you can get without being from West Virginia.

Suicide is a different animal. Females attempt it much more often, males succeed much more often. Males are much more likely to eat a gun while females tend towards overdosing.

Roh-Dog

Imagine that.

Leave combat to the boys.

I guess the octipus was pissed off losing to the card shark.

Women in 2008-2013 were barred from combat roles. Some studies found that non-combat troops had more mental issues on deployments because they had more time to engage in stupid activities and also non-combat troops questioned their purposes more than combat troops.

To make this an apple to apple comparison we should compare male fobbits and female fobbits and see how their rates of mental issue’s compare.

David

Believe twas Hondo who said the “sky high vet suicide rate” was primarily among non-combat Cold War aged folks, too.

rgr769

Yes, this is true because Cold Warriors ended their service decades ago. And their suicides likely had little or nothing to with their service twenty to forty years ago. If I off myself, it is not going to have anything to do with my military service that ended back in 1984.

A point to ponder (products, instant prescriptions with no hassle, for each gender as their key need):

For Hims– Viagra

For Hers– anti-depressants

(Just sayin’.)

And the military method of dealing with it?
Throw drugs at them.
Treat symptoms not cause.
Had a bunch of kids with me on their first deployment in 2009. After about the 3rd or 4th IDF incident, several went to the Combat Stress Clinic.
Pills to sleep.
Pills to make it through the day.
Pills to smooth out the rest of the time.
I had a bunch of zombies shambling around the FOB.
Most of them ‘got their minds right’ and got off the meds.

Tried to explain how to deal with IDF: if it hits you, you’ll never know; if it doesn’t hit you, you’re good to go.
Only thing that bother me was that damn Phalanx seemed to fire right over my room when ever the rockets/mortars came in

THIS!

“Incoming! Incoming! Brrrrrrrrrrrtt!”
One hellova show tho!!

………..

Slept thru a whole night of our mortar section doing H&I/llum training with the Stryker mounted 120s ~100 meters from our tent.

Next morning during our premission brief I noticed my fellow NCOs a little grumpy so asked wtf their problem was, my squad leader Jay jumps down my throat “didn’t you hear those assholes dropping out-going all night?!”

His face when I said “I heard something so I turned up the iPod. Slept like a baby”.

Been dang close from indirect to care. Next to the embassy in the Green Zone we got volleyed at. I felt the heat from that one from the other side of the T-wall as the blast reflected off of buildings. Got the piece of shrapnel from that, nearly domed me on its way back down. I was inches away from talking funny(funnier?) and a PH.

Fucker burnt my hand when I picked it up.

One of the most interesting stats I have seen recently is the life expectancy of 100% disabled vets.
Overall it is 67 years of age.

Which is 9 years lower than the general population…

However, when broken down by gender the numbers are pretty surprising.

For men it is 68 years of age, which is 7 years less than males overall.

But for women it is 63 years of age, which is a whopping 17 years lower than the 80 year life expectancy of US women overall.
