Suspect killed, trooper hurt during Florida chase, shootout

A Florida trooper was shot in the torso, and a suspect was fatally shot, during a chase and an exchange of gunfire between troopers and two men suspected of trying to steal a pickup truck on a highway, authorities said Saturday.

The two suspects had been attempting to steal the pickup truck early Saturday on Interstate 75, or items in the vehicle, when they were interrupted by a trooper and fled northbound in another truck. During the pursuit, the men fired several times at the trooper’s vehicle, hitting a tanker truck instead, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

At some point, the suspects headed in the other direction, southbound, on Interstate 75 and two other troopers joined the pursuit. One of the troopers was able to do a bump maneuver against the suspects’ trucks, bringing the chase to a halt. The suspects fled on foot into some woods, and then one of the suspects surrendered to the troopers and was taken into custody.

Hawaii island police shoot, injure suspect in Hilo vehicle theft

A Hawaii island police officer shot and injured a man during a reported vehicle theft in the Hilo area.

The Hawaii Police Department said that the shooting took place today when police responded to a call of a reported vehicle theft from a residence in the 500 block of Kukuau Street in Hilo.

HPD received the report at around 11:30 a.m., and at the scene the victim of the theft identified the suspect as a 32-year-old Hilo man.

Police began searching the area for the suspect and, at around noon, located a male on Kumukoa Street who matched the suspect’s description.

HPD said in a news release that officers tried to make contact with and identify the male, but he immediately began to run away. Police said the male then reportedly reached into his waistband area and pulled out a dark-colored pistol and turned toward the officer before the shooting took place.

2 Indiana officers shot, suspect dead after gunfire exchange

Two southern Indiana law enforcement officers were shot and wounded early Sunday during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect who fled a traffic stop on foot and fired at the officers before he was fatally shot, police said.

Both officers flown to a hospital in Indianapolis, where they are were in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening, said Sgt. John Perrine of Indiana State Police.

The man who fired at the officers was pronounced dead at a local hospital, he said. His name was not immediately released.
