Democratic presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton delivers a campaign speech on the war in Iraq at George Washington University in Washington March 17, 2008.

In the 90s, Republicans were characterized as mad dogs frothing at the mouth every time they heard the name Clinton. The Democrats charged that there was a “vast right wing conspiracy” against poor Bill Clinton, the comeback kid, the Hope from Hope. In many respects, Republicans were indeed like mad dogs frothing at the mouth, concocting conspiracies, peeing themselves a little every time Clinton was caught in a lie.

But, honestly, we had reason. Clinton lied about the economy in 1992, he lied about the middle class tax cut he would give us, he even lied about his dedication to welfare reform. he took credit for every little thing the Republican Congress forced down his throat. He divided this nation ideologically like it hadn’t been divided in over a hundred years – all over his own lies that perpetuated his time in office.

Now the Democrats are beginning to see how they’ve manipulated been by the Clintons. In the Daily Kos yesterday, Markos himself, admits (almost) that he has seen the light (h/t Little Green Footballs);

…if we want to talk about which party is the most grassroots-oriented, it’s no contest. We’ve seen it in the caucuses, we’ve seen it in the netroots, and we saw it in the Iowa county convention this Saturday. The party’s activists are busting their butts for Obama, while Clinton’s campaign is counting on low-information Democratic voters selecting Clinton based on little more than name ID.

But I could deal with all of that, really, if Clinton was headed toward victory. I see this as a long-term movement, and I’ve always expected setbacks along the way. Clinton isn’t the most horrible person in the world. She’s actually quite nice, despite all her flaws, and would make a fine enough president.

If she was winning.

But she’s not, and that’s the rub.

First of all, the only path to victory for Clinton is via coup by super delegate.

She knows this. That’s why there’s all the talk about poaching pledged delegates and spinning uncertainty around Michigan and Florida, and laying the case for super delegates to discard the popular will and stage a coup.

Yet a coup by super delegate would sunder the party in civil war.

Clinton knows this, it’s her only path to victory, and she doesn’t care. She is willing — nay, eager to split the party apart in her mad pursuit of power.

So, there’s another thing Republicans have been right about, to a certain extent. Sure Republicans, well, Conservatives anyway, are a bit reticent about voting for McCain, but not like the Democrats and Blacks will be in November if Clinton is their candidate – by crook.

Democrats are beginning to understand that they are secondary to the greatness of the Clinton name, they’ve always been secondary, though. Didn’t they notice how hard right Clinton’s politics turned away from them after the midterm elections in 1994?

Oh, sure, they noticed, and they complained, but they had the White House and that’s all that mattered – and that’s all that mattered to the Clintons, too. It’s all about the politics of staying office, of staying in the headlines – accomplishments mean nothing so long as they have that view of the Washington Monument every morning.

They divided America for their first term, and they’re dividing their own party for their second (AP Link);

After a weekend of campaign adversity, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband separately prodded Democratic Party leaders on Monday to look beyond mere delegate strength in picking a presidential nominee at this summer’s national convention.

“I don’t know that it will be an easy decision, but that’s what leaders sign up for,” said the former president, declaring that a candidate’s ability to win a general election should be considered.

So what’s important is not who Democrats want to represent them, but rather the political expediency of “who can win”, as if the Clintons understand that better then the rest of party’s members. perhaps we should forego the primary system and have the Clintons annoint their choice.

You were the ones who created this monster, Democrats, now you put them back in their box.
