The Marines are sexist!

| December 20, 2022

In 2020 the Marine Corps commissioned a report on their integrated basic training. The University of Pittsburgh has returned with their suggestions. Among those, are to remove “Sir” and “Ma’am.” They also think that the Marines, who have been overwhelmingly male for their entire history, don’t mention women Marines enough in boot camp.

From Marine Corps Times;

The lengthy report, commissioned by the Corps from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020 and completed in 2022, points out that half of the military services already have done away with gendered identifiers for training staff.

“The Army, Navy, and Coast Guard effectively de-emphasize gender in an integrated environment,” the report states. “Instead of saying ‘ma’am’ or ‘sir,’ recruits in these Services refer to their drill instructors using their ranks or roles followed by their last names. Gendered identifiers prime recruits to think about or visually search for a drill instructor’s gender first, before their rank or role.”

The University of Pittsburgh report highlights a number of ways ? subtle and not-so-subtle ? that Marine Corps boot camp centers male recruits and makes male Marines the standard. Three of the five sections of service history taught at boot camp contain no explicit mention of female Marines, and “core values” guided discussions exclusively highlight the stories of male Marines and sailors when giving examples of real-world heroism and leadership.

The study found, for example, that PowerPoint slides from Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego describing service leadership traits still used all male pronouns: “A leader who is confident in his decisions instills confidence in his Marines.”

Learning sessions about marriage in the military routinely featured images of husbands in uniform and civilian wives, the study found.

The horror. Those poor female Marines must be beside themselves with grief. Overall the US military is still only about 25% women. The Marine Corps has the fewest women, about 10% of the Corps are uterus owners.

Thank God we’re focused on these issues, which really, really matter, and aren’t wasting time on preparing to fight a war.

I saluted a few female officers with a cheerful “Good Morning Sir” in my career. In my defense they had very butchy haircuts. I’m glad I’m out.

I’m more embarrassed at being an Soldier attending Naval gunfire school at Coronado and saluting some grizzled old CPOs

I think the greeting of the day should be “Toodles!”. Mostly because I think it would be fucking hilarious if the Marines had to say that to each other. And I would hardly ever make fun of them.

11B-Mailclerk

(Salutes) ” First to fight, sir!”

(No salute) (shreiks) “DO I LOOK LIKE A MAN?!!!”

(Still holding salute) (looks again) “yes, ma’am, in that uniform and haircut. You do. Maam. First to fight , maam!”

USMC Steve

What they currently wear are with minor modifications for the funbags, male uniforms now. They want to look like us, they gotta take the sir bit too from time to time.

CDR D

I saluted a lady 3 star with a “Good Morning, Sir” once. She just grimaced a bit and returned the salute. I made myself scarce.

5JC

This is exactly what they are talking about. Just because somebody has a uterus doesn’t mean they are male! Get woke Mason! Get Woke!

I’d also like to be a fly on the wall for an Army recruit calling a Drill Sergeant “Sir” or “Ma’am”. From what I remember from BCT that would be some memorable times for the platoon.

Apparently the Army was woke all the way back before 1988 when I went since they had long been addressing Drill Sergeants as “Drill Sergeant”

SFC D

There was a female Drill SGT in my BCT company in 1987. The first time I said “yes ma’am” to her, she said “Private D, I’m gonna let that one go, because you were obviously raised right and being respectful. Next time, you’ll do pushups till you fucking die!” Here endeth the lesson.

timactual

The phrase “Don’t call me sir I work for a living!!” seems to ring a bell.
I think perhaps those Univ. of Pittsburgh folks weren’t really paying attention. They don’t seem to have connected with the world around them.

Hate_me

I remember going through 12B OSUT in ‘97 when they introduced a female drill (I believe she was a 38M) halfway through the basic portion, as part of some Clinton effort.

First time a recruit called her “ma’am,” she called the company to formation and threatened to skull-drag the next man she saw wearing a towel from the shower to his bunk, claiming our entirely male floor was disrespecting her by not changing in the latrine (though the castle wasn’t designed for such).

She was fit, I’ll give her that, but her attitude never changed, no matter how hard we tried to adjust to her demands. By week 8, she took the smallest mistake as a comment on her gender and insisted that we PT against her until one of us quit. After a long smoke session (seems like two hours in memory, probably closer to 20 minutes), the senior DS made up an excuse so she could leave with her dignity. She was exhausted, none of the recruits was even sweating.

“…aren’t wasting time preparing to fight a war.” No need to prepare. The domestic enemies of our Republic have already said they would let our foreign enemies know before we attack. Then they will surrender our forces at the time and place chosen for them.

IDGAF if you stand or squat to pee. Just be able to break things and destroy the enemy…preferably before they destroy us.

‘cuse me while I curl up in my DD Form 214 and take a nap. Gunsmoke if off and I need to start my dreaming of of Miss Kitty.

David

You need to check out later seasons of “Lawman”. Peggy Castle…yum.

KoB

Unfortunately, Lawman doesn’t broadcast in my AO. Well familiar with Leggy Peggy and her black haired beauty self. Have seen her in some of her other works including Perry Mason, 77 Sunset Strip, and Gunsmoke during the Chester years. Bless her heart, drank herself to death.

Tuff schedule here, 2nd coffee gets me thru my Barbaras (Billingslea &Hale). Play catch up on TAH and go on the FGS hunt. Make noon snack and get supper going. Snack is done by 1300 where Miss Kitty comes up on the MeTV Net. Nap time & piddling chores gets me to Wagon Train @ 1600. The struggle is real. I watch very little modern broadcast or streaming service stuff. There is an extensive library here at Firebase Magnolia.

Hack Stone

We always knew that the Marines are the sexiest. Oh, you wrote sexist, never mind.

Graybeard

And here I was thinking it was “sex starved”…

Hack Stone

That too, particularly in 29 Stumps.

MustangCryppie

Hmmm. I guess that 29 Palms is the Marine equivalent of the USN’s Guam.

GUAM…acronym for “Give Up And Masturbate”.

Heh.

USMC Steve

That is why those tortoises piss themselves when picked up, they are afraid some grunt is gonna hammer them.

I’m glad they used .ppt slides from MCRD SD to illustrate their point. Aren’t ALL WMs still trained exclusively at PI?

Is “Wookiee” no longer an acceptable term?

Earlier this year Feb 2022 the first coed Company entered training a MCRD San Diego.

Since 4 RTB is at PI It might have been more repesentative to use their ppt slide.

A Coed Training Company? How long until the first Pregnancy?

Who prepares this crap and then briefs the results with a straight face? Why are not the vast majority of us ‘normies’ laughing this stupid wasteful dreck out of the office? Seriously, someone paid good money for this “research”?

Since when does the Marine Corps care what a university thinks? They knew what they would get with this “study”. Is this Milley and Austin again? Sad.

Flagwaver

Just do away with “ma’am” and call everyone “sir” like the science fiction stories have.

NEC338x

Wow! It took two years to produce a report that came to the predetermined conclusions that the diversity commissars wanted? I’m so glad that Pitt elites could bring such badly needed sociology research to the Corps. Truly inspiring. https://www.asanet.org/footnotes-article/bringing-sociology-us-military-leaders/

Even with all the established procedures, rich history, policy regulations, and infrastructure supporting the process, at the end of the day this transformational process comes down to the people: marines make marines. A dedicated team of drill instructors spends day in and day out with recruits for 13 weeks, molding them into institutional actors—basically trained marines who then will become the legacy of the institution itself.”

MustangCryppie

Hugging my DD214 as I read this.

A Proud Infidel®™

Who hugs and kisses their DD214 more often, you or me?

MustangCryppie

I don’t know. There’s been an awful lot of hugging and kissing going on at my house lately.

MustangCryppie

Get rid of “sir” and “ma’am”? Hell no! Just get rid of “ma’am” and call all officers “sir” regardless of gender. You know, move closer and closer to mirroring Star Trek.

Then there is this from a recent Stars and Stripes:
There are several possible reasons why less than 10% of the military’s special operations forces are women – including discrimination, sexual assault and conflicting military policies, a government watchdog concluded in a study released this week.

Perhaps the “government watchdog” had no clue of what the purpose/mission of SOCOM was.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

It’s great to see the military remains focused on what matters, increasing the lethality of the force.
