Hot!! USS Texas is afloat and sailing to Galveston NOW!! YOU CAN WATCH!

| August 31, 2022

573 feet of pure bad-ass lovely, the USS Texas is the country’s only extant warship  to survive both WWI and WWII, and she’s afloat TODAY to be seen by any and all en route to Galveston, TX for repairs. Moored at the San Jacinto monument for years, her hull has deteriorated so badly that they are pumping up to 2000 gallons of water a minute to keep her from sinking.

It’s the only surviving battleship that served in both world wars, having fought Nazis and the Japanese Army during World War II. But the greatest challenge in recent years for the USS Texas has been a leaky, rusty hull that at times forced workers to pump out about 2,000 gallons (7,570 liters) of water per minute from the 110-year-old ship.

To ensure the historic vessel doesn’t sink and can continue hosting visitors, the foundation in charge of its care is towing the ship Wednesday from its longtime home along the Houston Ship Channel to a shipyard in Galveston for much needed repairs.

Tony Gregory, the president of the Battleship Texas Foundation, said Wednesday the pulling of the ship by tugboats and getting it on its way was perfect. He said any problems would have happened in the first 15 minutes of pulling the ship but there were no issues.

This is part of a $35,000,000 project to renovate the old girl and move her to a new more accessible location where she can draw more visitors. Fiscally, she needs a quarter-million visitors a year and gets about 40% of that in her current location.

Tugboats are planning to pull the ship from the San Jacinto battleground site in La Porte before dawn Wednesday. It’s set to arrive at Gulf Copper & Manufacturing Corporation’s shipyard in Galveston by mid-afternoon the same day.

Moving day schedule:

  • 3 a.m.: Work starts at San Jacinto
  • 6 to 7:30 a.m.: Battleship Texas gets underway and enters the Houston Ship Channel.
  • 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Battleship Texas will cross under the Fred Hartman Bridge and enter the bay.
  • 2 to 3 p.m.: Battleship Texas will pass near the Texas City Dike.
  • 3 to 4 p.m.: Battleship Texas will enter the Galveston Ship Channel.
  • 4 to 5 p.m.: Battleship Texas will arrive at Gulf Copper Galveston.

I’m surprised this isn’t the state of most Navy ships due to the emphasis on expending resources on woke fuckery instead of operational readiness.

P.S.
Fuck Joe Biden
He belongs in jail
His graft and his corruption
Are of legendary scale.

Graybeard

Grew up with my (GO ARMY beat navy) father taking us to see the old girl.
Took our kids when we could.

Hate that they’re having to relocate her. We’d do a day at the Monument and at the Battleship – got a twofer outta the deal.

Watching the Texas come around the point in the video may or may not have caused turgidity.

2,000 gallons per MINUTE! Damn! That is some epic class leak. I’m guessing another coat of paint won’t fix that?

Maybe that tape or stuff you see on TV that can seal and waterproof a rowboat with a door screen bottom.

USMC Steve

Billy Mays Hays, hawks that stuff I believe.

jeff LPH 3 63-66

Since Billy Mays passed away, there is another “Hawker’ that took over.

That’s after the hull repairs they did before – I think 1988? It is a problem, and the low paid visit rates don’t generate enough funds to maintain her well.

Quartermaster

It’s been over 30 years since the last dry dock period and now almost the entire hull has to be replaced.

Visitation was never large on the ship. I went aboard twice, once in the early 60s, and the next in the early 70s just before my father retired from the USAF. Visitation was never large at either the ship or the adjacent San Jacinto battle site.

The final home is up in the air, for now. The three sites they are considering don’t seem to have much to recommend them. They need several other ships together with it to help as a magnet site like Patriot’s point in SC, or a place with large tourism already so the ship would be an added attraction.

Damn! That has got to be one hefty heavy hawser to haul that much hulk without breaking or separating.

Awesome, we need to preserve our past is the government chipping in? Of course not it’s too concerned with erasing our past and remaking it in a new image.

NOTHING happens unless the pols at the top of the current crowd in charge get their palms greased.

The Great State of Texas is funding this – but they want her moved to a “more accessible location” to increase income from visits.
I do not know where that might be.

Sapper3307

Is she being converted into a missile battleship for Ukraine?

Skivvy Stacker

A couple of years ago I had the great honor of going aboard the USS North Carolina in Wilmington, NC. To say it was a once in a lifetime experience would be an understatement.
To be able to go aboard the USS Texas? That would figuratively blow that experience out of the water.

I thank the Lord almost daily… well, at least twice a year, that the Iowa was pulled out of Suisun Bay where she was rotting, and towed to Long Beach where she can be retired gracefully and honorably.

It’s now really easy to make a weekend of exploring the old gal!

So far, I’ve visited the Texas, Alabama, New Jersey, Missouri (before Hawaii), Wisconsin and North Carolina. Someday, I’ll get to the Massachusetts.

Old tanker

Saw a brief video yesterday where a salute was rendered to the old girl as she entered the Galveston dry dock area.

Owen

That’s the ship that flooded her ballast so she could fire farther inland on D-Day, or shortly afterward. Straight up gangster leaned a battleship in order to more effectively yeet diplomacy and democracy to the Wehrmacht. One spicy shell at a time.

Knew I’d seen a video on it…. https://youtu.be/3oJSRAFkJIs
