Ukraine Navy Admiral Promoted

| April 18, 2022

Ukrainian Good Luck Sign

Russian Navy Black Sea flagship RTS Moskva (CG-121) has sunk while being towed toward Sevastopol, Crimea, after sustaining major damage in a fire Wednesday according to Russian state media.

“During the towing of the Moskva cruiser to the port of destination, the ship lost its stability due to damage to the hull received during the fire from the detonation of ammunition. In the conditions of stormy seas, the ship sank,” the Russian ministry of defense told the TASS newswire.

While all of this is true up to a point, left unsaid is the source of the ammo that detonated. Mick sends.

Ukraine Navy chief promoted by Zelenskyy after sinking of Russian warship: ‘Brilliant’

Black Sea flagship vessel believed to have been struck by Ukrainian missiles

By Greg Norman

The head of Ukraine’s Navy has received a promotion following the sinking of Russia’s Moskva warship last week in what officials are hailing as a “brilliant operation.”

Rear Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa has been elevated to the rank of Vice Admiral, according to a statement from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office.

A U.S. official had told Fox News on Friday that the latest assessment by the U.S. is that the Moskva was struck by two Ukrainian Neptune missiles before it sank.

“Everyone knows what a lightning operation!” Victoria Strakhova, an adviser to Zelenskyy, wrote in a Facebook post praising Neizhpapa for the promotion.

“Adviser to the head of the OP Victoria Strakhova wrote on Facebook that the decision was made in view of the ‘brilliant operation’ that everyone already knows about,” added Anton Gerashchenko, an official at Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“Congratulations and we wish further no less brilliant operations!” Gerashchenko also wrote in a Telegram post about Neizhpapa.

Neptunes, first fielded in 2021, are based on the Soviet AS-20 ‘Kayak’ anti-ship missile which is similar to the U.S.-built Harpoon missile. Thanks, Mick.

Not sure what he is is charge of the Navy was scuttled 5 minutes after the war started.

Normally not a navy function but it seems to be working splendidly.

Gotta blame somebody…

26Limabeans

I’m curious if they struck simultaneous or spaced and if they
were launched as such.
Could a pair be launched and stay together timing wise?
Neat trick if they pulled it off.

5JC

I bet they shot more than 2. If they saw it out there it would be too good an opportunity to pass up.

Mick

Gotta shoot twice at an HVT like MOSKVA.

Probably a better tactic is to launch the missiles in succession with a waypoint trajectory on at least the first missile. If done properly, you can have two nearly simultaneous arrivals from different directions. Don’t know if you can do this with Penguins, but you can with Harpoons.

I recall seeing the control panel on an un-named missle
system during my Vast Military Industrial Complex career.
It had some big square lighted pushbottons that were
labeled “shoot one”, “shoot two”, “shoot ripple” and
“shoot all”.
I would like to think the first Neptune opened up a giant
hole and the second one followed it inside the hull.

In Viet of the Nam you didn’t have to be Signal to
listen to radio traffic of all sorts. Just pulling perimeter
guard duty with a prick 25 handy was a great time to
listen to Arty calling the “shots” and “splash” with
“add 100”, “left 100” etc. You would have loved it.
That and the Broncos dropping flares all night.

Some sources are saying that the Ukrainians may have used a UCAV to distract MOSKVA’s air defense systems in order to fly the two anti-ship missiles in “under the radar”. The UCAV may also have been used for targeting.

Either way, good tactics if they used the UCAV.

Nothing like a pay raise and some bling as a reward for doing your job. Wonder what the launch key turners and/or the other troops got out of the deal?

Wonder if the Ruskies on that tub got a “sinking” feeling when they say them missiles swarming in?

Planet Ord

I’ve seen images of it on fire that show it’s missile detecting radar stowed. They probably never knew what hit them.

How come when Myself and the MM2 with me went to the XO hearing and Captains mast for the Boiler room air compressor that ran out of oil and wasn’t logged in on the cold iron logbook that it was lit off and in service, then WHY THE FUCK didn’t I get promoted to MM3. The Captain told us that if he had more men like us onboard, the OKIE 3 would be at the bottom of the bay. Only a suspended bust. He said men because back in those days, all we had to read were girley magazines and no women on board.

Good for him!

Does this mean he may be on equal ground with this person?😉😎

Considering the other ship which was destroyed at dockside, I’d say the Ruskies have a problem with ammunition handling and fire control measures, to say the least. If every ship lost is due to ‘fire and ammunition explosions’ then they have a lot of work to do onboard the rest of their fleet.

I was wondering about this. Did they really lose the ship just to damage, or do their crews,i.e. unmotivated conscripts, lack the proper damage control training? I mean granted, we are talking about the Russians, and the story of the doomed fleet they sent the long way round to fight the Japanese back when the Czar still ruled makes for a real face palming read. Guess some things never change?

I’m late as usual, but here is an interesting analysis of a picture of the stricken Moskva taken from a commercial ship that responded to its distress calls. A big word of caution: this website is very pro-Russia, but it has in-depth analysis, unlike anything coming from the Ukraine government.
