Annie Todd and Alfonzo Galvan, Sioux Falls Argus Leader
One person was shot and killed by police Thursday night after the person confronted responding officers with a knife, police announced during Friday morning’s police briefing.Sioux Falls Police were called to the scene around 10:45 p.m. to make a welfare check on an individual at the 1900 block of West Sixth Street, Chief Jon Thum said. The subject was armed with a knife and “confronted” the officers on scene.
De-escalation tactics were used including verbal warnings, non-lethal tools such as a taser and a 40 mm foam projectile fired from a non-lethal impact round launcher, Thum said.
Those were unsuccessful, Thum said. Then a “physical altercation” happened and one officer fired their gun at the subject. The subject was taken to the hospital and later died from their wounds.
Thum wouldn’t give any information about the victim, including age or gender.

Homeowner shoots 16-year-old intruder on Johnston Street in Akron
By: Kaylyn Hlavaty , Scott Noll
A homeowner shot a teen who allegedly forced his way into his home on Johnston Street Tuesday in Akron, police said.Officers responded to a call about a home invasion shortly before 7:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Johnston Street.
A 16-year-old boy was found inside home with a gunshot wound. The 74-year-old homeowner told police that the teen forced his way into the home, and at one point, the homeowner confronted the teen and shot him multiple times.
“He headed to the basement and I pumped two into him there,” said James Lowgher. “He went down the steps that way and I got him a third time I hope.”
“He didn’t belong here and I knew damn well after he came through the door like that, I can shoot him,” said Lowgher.

Wow! What a nice set of “cans” Ms Thang has. Wait!?………we ARE talking about the suppressors, aren’t we?
Of course we CAN talk about suppressors, CAN we not. Another Short shorts girl but by now you have most likely heard the Royal Teens singing Short Shorts, 1958
Good things come in matched pairs, Tox.
And once again, we see the results of bringing a knife to a gun fight.
Too bad it wasn’t a trifecta, but, as Meatloaf said, “two outta three ain’t bad”.
As for the Ohio homeowner shooting the teen, at 74 y.o., the homeowner doesn’t care about a possible court case. And most likely with a clean police record, all any prosecutor would recommend is a light slap on the wrist. Any good defense attorney would say, if the teen had stayed outside, he wouldn’t have gotten shot. Also, the homeowner, as old as he is, wasn’t used to having that much adrenaline pumping through his body. And with a high dose of adrenaline after an incident, one is likely to do/say highly unusual and irregular things.
Hopefully the yute has learned a valuable and life-saving lesson about breaking into strangers’ homes……..but I doubt it. We’ll probably be seeing his name again in later years.
While I would not vote to convict if I were on the jury, a 74-year-old is not allowed to shoot a fleeing felon.
Even inside his home.
The article doesn’t state the exact circumstances.
But if he shot the kid in the back as he was running away down the stairs they still might indict the homeowner
I believe shooting a fleeing subject is lawful if the fleeing subject is armed and could be a danger to the homeowner/LEO/other people. If fleeing and at a distance where there is not a threat to the above people I would say a bad shoot but in this case was the teen armed????? And a side note that I may say is the home owner needs some range time.
While the resident was within his rights to defend against the entry and shoot the guy, the bit about pumping one more into him is problematic. Language used in statements can come back to bite you.
In this situation, the only statement the resident should make is “I feared for my life when I pulled the trigger. I will make any further statements at the station with my lawer.”
The perp was fleeing DEEPER into the home (basement), and thus still a perceived threat.
