Thursdays Are For Cooking….

| March 10, 2022

This is something that is suitable for cold weather, and if it’s still cold in your AO, fix it. It’s just basic food. Add some cut up veggies to the table setting, some fresh biscuits or cornbread (include butter with this, or course!) and tell your kids and grandkids to tuck in.  We’re still getting snow warnings in my AO, and the furnace won’t get turned off until the temps stay at 70F or more, overnight.  There are piles of snow in the shadows of houses, because the shadowed area is maybe 2 degrees lower than the sunny area. This is when you tell your grandkids about microclimates and why birds go south for the Winter, but come back in the Spring.

Slow cooker BBQ beans and smoked sausage

 Ingredients:

2 cans (15.5 oz each) great northern beans, drained, rinsed

2 cans (15 oz each) Progresso™ black beans, drained, rinsed

1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)

1 cup barbecue sauce

¼ cup packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon ground mustard

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 teaspoons chili powder

1 ring (1 to 1 1/4 lb) fully cooked smoked Polish sausage

Cooking it:

Spray 3- to 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray.

Mix all ingredients except sausage in cooker.

Place sausage ring on bean mixture.

Cover; cook on LOW heat setting 5 to 6 hours.

Note: If your rugrats and snowball fight champions don’t like this, they are space aliens or Russian spies. Act accordingly. 🙂 And have a nice weekend. Build a small bonfire and tell tall tales to your grandkids, and watch the stars come out at night. You might even get lucky and see a speck like the Space Station pass overhead. No matter what comes down the road, we’re all in this mess together, and even if we had nothing to do with making the mess, we can fix it.

Bean awhile since I used the old Bean and made a bean meal

Multi-beans, nice touch. I’d use a combo of black, kidney and pintos for chili. Thanks, Ex.

Let the flame war begin.

Tanks, Ex, this is a favorite of mine…and many of the folks I have shared this with. Let’s eat!

Flame war? Whut? Because of the beans choice? Even (GO ARMY BEAT) Navy Beans go well here! The sauce mix? (tomato/mustard/vinegar base) Polish v German v Eyetalian v American snausages? Pork v beef v chicken? biscuits v (real) cornbread v some good fresh baked crusty bread?

If you make cornbread, add a small can of creamed corn. It makes a more moist cornbread.

Mick

I also toss in some diced jalapenos and finely cubed cheddar cheese.

Don’t forget to throw a very heavy pinch or a very small, little handful of sugar in your batter to make it just right.
h/t to KoB for the cornbread tip

Imma gonna sic Josey Wales’ Red Bone Hound on yore azz, ya cornbread ruining, wing wiping, Spaced Out Kay Dette. Just because you’re a cupcake, don’t mean we’re baking them. Sacrilege! Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!

You may take note that I let the “…combo of….for chili.” thing slide since (a) I know which side of the cornbread to put my butter on, (b) anybody that spent as many hours in an aircraft with the wings and motors mounted all catty whumpus or using a whirlybird as a diving board is bound to be a little odd, (c) giving the Texians amongst us a chance to play pile on.

Sugar in cornbread is an abomination before God and all that is Good and Holy and ranks right up there next to polymer frames on Hand Cannons.

Somewhere a slit trench needs digging, yet here you are.
