No official plan for evacuating Americans trapped beyond Kabul

According to an official report, Washington D.C. does not have evacuation plans for Americans who have not yet made it to Kabul. So far, they’re required to “shelter in place” until the U.S. embassy provides them with instructions.

The precise number of Americans outside Kabul was not immediately clear but up to 15,000 may still be in Afghanistan, the Post reported. The Taliban has been on the offensive across the country for weeks. At a news briefing later Tuesday, Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s national security adviser, told reporters that the Taliban expressed a willingness to provide “safe passage of civilians to the airport,” the report said.
The U.S. was going to hold the Taliban to that promise, he added.
Sullivan was asked by a CBS reporter if U.S. troops will be pulled from Afghanistan before all Americans and Afghan allies are out. He said he would not comment on hypotheticals.
Sullivan did not immediately respond to an after-hours email from Fox News.
He tweeted on Tuesday: “When I was asked about whether we’re going to get all Americans out of Afghanistan I said “that’s what we intend to do” and that’s exactly what we’ll do, and are accomplishing right now with HKIA re-opened and operational, thanks to the incredible work of our troops and diplomats.
The State Department on Tuesday told American citizens and others looking to get out of Afghanistan that they should “shelter in place” until they are given further instruction by the U.S. Embassy amid a fragile security situation in the Afghan capital.
“Our message remains for American citizens and for others who have expressed interest in relocation out of Afghanistan: shelter in place until and unless you receive a communication from the U.S. embassy,” spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

Exhibit A: American leaders on the ground at the Kabul airport are angry at British paratroopers because they are running patrols into Kabul city to recover British subjects and exscort them to the airport for evacuation. The U.S. leaders assert the Paras’s are imperiling some deal they made with the Taliban to stay inside the perimeter at the airport. Seems like the Brits are the real warriors there.

Are they government employees or government contractors?
Employees or Contractors for companies not affiliated with the US government?
Private citizens working for NGOs or just there on their own?
I would say that if they are in the first category, then yes, the US Government has an obligation to evacuate them.
If they are in categories 2 or 3, there ought to be no obligation for the US to plan for their evacuation. They chose to go to Afghanistan, KNOWING it was a war zone, KNOWING it was being overrun by Taliban. This has been going on for months. Presumably these people had plenty of opportunities to leave in the past.
Really, has anything changed? A different group of armed assholes is in charge but for Hakmed Al Jihadi out in the wild lands of Afghanistan, life is going to go on as usual, ditto for whatever the US citizens there.
That’s what I want to know. I know we’ll have a lot of contractors related to our military ops. I have a feeling the largest number are people that are willingly there due to family ties or for altruistic reasons (NGO for example).

Having been in emergency management I can tell you that shelter in place is a great strategy for tornadoes, unexpected hurricanes, and nuclear bombardment. It is not an effective strategy for dealing with being behind enemy lines and surrounded by hostile, heavily armed forces.

In June 0f 2021…two months ago… the Department of State released a warning that no Americans should travel to Afghanistan, and all Americans in Afghanistan should leave IMMEDIATELY.
We had stayed two months passed the deadline but the Taliban were still “honoring” the ceasefire against Americans that expires August 31st..
This pullout was a clusterfuck, and adequate preparations to make it a smooth transition did not happen.
But it was not a surprise. It was well established by treaty and well publicized.
I think we should do everything we can to evacuate these Americans. But any troops in Afghanistan are in violation of the treaty Trump “negotiated”.
The Taliban know they risk initiating a significant retaliation if they do anything to our troops right now… but the situation is tenuous and we have to be pretty limited with respect to the scope and force commitments of any NEO operations we conduct.

Exhibit A: American leaders on the ground at the Kabul airport are angry at British paratroopers because they are running patrols into Kabul city to recover British subjects and exscort them to the airport for evacuation. The U.S. leaders assert the Paras’s are imperiling some deal they made with the Taliban to stay inside the perimeter at the airport. Seems like the Brits are the real warriors there.
Which begs the question. Why are we not running patrols into Kabul to retrieve those told to shelter in place?
