Suspect in critical condition after charging officers with a knife, Syracuse Police say

by: Natalie Dascoulias
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — A person is listed in critical condition after charging officers with a knife at Madison Towers on Sunday, Syracuse Police said.

Police were called to a reported stabbing where a victim advised officers his roommate had stabbed him, officials said. Police went to the sixth floor to look for the suspect and went inside the apartment.

According to Police Chief Kenton Buckner, “an individual came around the corner with a knife in a threatening way to the officers. At that point lethal and less lethal weapons were deployed against the individual with a knife charging officers.”

So were they on the 14th or 6th floors, in Syracuse?

That is about the most confusing story I have read in Richmond! Did the assailants defend themselves or run away? Was the victim robbing the deceased?

Shoulda used more of the lethal weapons instead of the “less lethal” weapons. Don’t try to get all stabby against folks that have a shootie. Even if you do have a sharp Buck.

Good on the Richmond citizen for taking out the trash. Maybe the wounded perp bled out. We can only hope.

I kinda like the Buck, but the plastic (ok, phynolic) handle is pretty slippery if your hand is wet.

I got one to carry instead of the antique Boy Scout fixed blade that is my favorite overall. Ended up using a triangular file to make some coarse checking on the phynolic handle that helps control the knife when my hands are wet.

That blade is so thick though, it’s a pretty heavy blade. Blamed near a pry bar that will take a razor edge.

I once saw a Buck like that 119 (it had a longer blade) snapped in two pieces at the hilt.

The paratrooper that owned it was sitting on his bunk with the blade in 1 hand and the handle in the other, he would look at 1 piece and then the other in disbelief, he couldn’t reconcile that he had broken his brand new Buck doing a PLF on it.

Buck previously used good carbon steel. At some point, they followed “trend” and switched to stainless steel.

Gah.

Most stainless is inherently more brittle that carbon, 440 in particular. 420 is somewhat better than 440, but can’t compare to a proper carbon steel with proper heat-treatment.

The Buck knife I bought in 1982 is -way- better than the one I bought while traveling a few years ago. The little Buck penkinfe I bought recently is made in China. WTF?

RGR 4-78

This would have been about 1981 or 82, and I believe it was 880.

I don’t much care for stainless, a good carbon steel blade is the way to go. Trouble is, trying to find a well made lock blade in carbon steel for EDC is hard to find/afford.

Graybeard

Yeah, the trend to stainless in the knife industry has been sad at best.

My favorite knives are all high-carbon. That Scout knife has been many, many places in all sorts of weather – and no rust. But then I care for my knives.

I have a Buck 303+ 3-blade folder that is a replacement for one 82nd Airborne Brother gave to his groomsmen when he was married. It was part of my EDC for decades, finally needed repairs & Buck gave me a brand new one (and the old one back for memories’ sake). But still my favorite 3-blade pocket before that was a carbon steel. You can just get a better edge on them.

I have broken a blade trying to get through some JB Weld once. On the old Buck folder I broke one from being stupid & using it as a screwdriver/pry-bar.

Are you sure the Buck penknife is not a counterfeit? I didn’t think Buck did anything outside USA – but I’ve been wrong before.

Graybeard

OK, RGR 4-78, I’m stumped. What was the paratrooper doing to/with his brand new Buck?

tom reynolds

He did a plf on it.In other words (for all you legs out there) he jumped and it broke when he landed on it. Another great American brand manufacturing garbage in China.

Graybeard

Yeah, I asked Airborne Son and he enlightened me.

We’re thinking there had to be a microscopic crack in the metal (what we used to magnaflux to check for in engines we were rebuilding – I guess they still do that).

My 119 is stamped “USA” – so no blaming the ChiComs for that.

Thanks, tom reynolds.
