Federal Eviction Moratorium Ends

Nancy Pelosi and the House Dems called on the Biden admin to immediately, again extend the nation’s eviction moratorium, calling it a “moral imperative” to prevent Americans from being put out of their homes during a COVID-19 “surge.”

SCOTUS voted 5-4 in June to allow the broad eviction ban to continue through the end of July. One of the Justices in the majority, Justice Kavanaugh, made clear he would block any additional extensions unless there was “clear and specific congressional authorization.”

Democratic leaders pushed to draft a bill, but in the end, too many lawmakers had questions and concerns, and they could not muster the votes to extend the ban.

President Biden and the White House as of Monday morning didn’t respond to a statement from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team calling on the executive branch to extend the federal eviction moratorium, as “Squad” Democrats continued to camp on the Capitol steps in protest of the inaction from their party.

“Action is needed, and it must come from the Administration. That is why House leadership is calling on the Administration to immediately extend the moratorium,” Pelosi, D-Calif., and her leadership team said in a Sunday morning statement hours after the moratorium ended. “As the CDC doubles down on mask-wearing and vaccination efforts, science and reason demand that they must also extend the moratorium in light of the delta variant.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) early in the coronavirus pandemic implemented an eviction moratorium that banned landlords from removing people who were behind on their rent. It was extended multiple times but finally ended Saturday night following a June opinion from Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh saying Congress – not the president — would have to extend the moratorium if it were to continue.

Consistent with that, the White House asked Congress to pass legislation continuing the ban on landlords evicting tenants who fail to pay their rent.

Time for the FSA to pay their rent. The circular firing squad among Congressional Dems and the White House is just an entertaining bonus.

    If I was a betting man I’d short insurance companies with real estate products.
    I gotta feeling a lot of ‘cooking accidents’ or ‘bad extension cord incidents’ are gonna tick up.

    That being said, the creative destruction in Markets IS a good thing. The cure to high prices is high prices.

    Someone I know who follows this kind of thing is saying “watch for the start of a housing crash”. Said it won’t be a prolonged crash, but is sure it will happen.

    Couple months ago, the Missus and I happened to be out and about and saw a TFD friend of ours getting off his truck(313 Pump & Ladder) and asked him Yo Mikey, what’s go’n on? Glancing at the building and listening in on his radio chatter, recognizing us, he walked over to my wife and I, leaned in and said quietly ‘something must be up ‘cause the Fire Marshal’s here and from what I’ve heard – he said he can’t tell whether it was a tri-light on the second floor or an Israelite with matches in the basement, but it this also hasn’t been this week’s first suspected arson’. Since then(according to our Mikey), them stat’s are on an upswing and given to the times, and as a ten year veteran of TFD, he’s absolutely not amazed..

            I didn’t defend it. A few of my peers use it and instead of chastising them —as I know their characters— I let it go.
            So many bigger problems in the world to worry about faux ADL-ish outrage.
            And to the point about the act of, I know burning down a building that’s worth more on paper than for sale is technically against the law, I’ll be damned if it’s not a good business decision.
            So, good on ‘em.

    Most landlords are paying on a mortgage as well as other bills on their properties. Most do not have millions to play with like Nancy Pelousi.

    There’s no winner here. The tenants that couldn’t or wouldn’t pay will be out on the street, the landlord that’s now impossibly behind in his mortgage will be foreclosed on, and everyone is homeless together.

      Mortgage companies don’t make money holding property. The foreclosed rentals will go on the market at fire sale prices, which should pretty much ensure a real estate market crash. Again.

    “Time for the FSA to pay their rent.” Past time! Really no excuse for them not paying their rent before. For the most part, these deadbeats have been drawing more $ from the other giveaways than they were making while working. And as the article stated, there is north of $40 BILLIONS of dollars in the Federal slush fund to the states (OUR MONEY) that has been available for rent assistance.

    And now, EVERY business out there is screaming for employees to work. GMAFB! Stub out your Camel, get off your ass, pick up a shovel, and GO TO WORK!

      Amen! I can see a moratorium lasting for the duration of the lockdowns, and maybe for a few months after. But that shit should have expired by Thanksgiving 2020 at the very latest. The moratoriums still in effect now, with so many businesses hiring, is just insane.

    Corporate landlords will benefit from this moment same as they did during the 2008 housing crash.

    If I had no soul this is good time to make a few bucks, but I have a hard time benefitting from misery.
