Doug Reeves – Navy SEAL Diver & Persian Gulf War Participant Explained

| July 20, 2021 | 230 Comments

Douglas Reeves

As a follow-up to a posted article yesterday about Douglas Reeves, we wanted to share an email that Reeves wrote to a genuine Navy SEAL when that SEAL questioned Reeves’ claim of being a Navy SEAL diver.

This email was written before the article yesterday.  Click on it to see a larger version.

The short version: Reeves will be damned if the Navy or any SEAL is going to tell him that he didn’t earn that Trident.

BUD/S is the first phase in becoming a SEAL.  An individual must serve in a SEAL unit and complete additional requirements such as parachute training.  Although BUD/S training is substantial, it is not the only requirement.

It also seems as if Reeves has his own definition of the Gulf War and the dates that it encompasses.

  1. E4 Mafia '83-'87 says:

He’s the first Trans-SEAL. He’s a SEAL by his own definition, so he wants you to respect that. I was in when the Stark was hit in ’87, but that doesn’t make me Gulf War Vet because the actual war started around 3 years later. The truth is costing him money, so he’s going all in to prove he’s a SEAL. He should just say “I gave it my best shot, but I couldn’t pack the gear”. His choice.

    • Steven Lima Golf says:

If he really completed the diving phase of training and not the rest he would have been a Navy SCUBA diver (NEC 5345) and could have stayed in the Navy Diver pipeline and possibly could have been a fourth man diver with EOD. Then later went on to EOD school. I don’t believe he completed the diving phase.

OOh, first and I see that Douglas Robert Reeves is spinning like the blades of a jet engine at full throttle, will Douglas Robert Reeves lawer up and Bernath, or does Douglas Robert Reeves have some swill-guzzling drek in a worn-out old Jaguar to badger people at his will? Douglas Robert Reeves sure seems desperate, so why did Douglas Robert Reeves axe his farcebook pages so suddenly, it’s not like some dickweeed is leaving Google®™ hits on threads exposing his fraudery (*OOPS!*)

    • MarineDad61 says:

      ALERT…
It’s now going on…. on the Book of Fake.
Yes, Doug Reeves’ primary account is still up,
and it’s still wide open for comments.

Doug Reeves has put up 2 comments… less than 2 hours ago.
1 with a photo upload of a “Diving Duty Summary”.
He is also calling a name I recognize (a retired Navy SEAL??) a LIAR.

      See it all here….
      Ugh.

      • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

OH so now Douglas Reeves is calling a LEGIT retired USN SEAL a liar? Sounds like Douglas Reeves is trying to make himself the subject of a Don Shipley Video!

  3. Tallywhagger says:

Well, damn. The old story about the shovel and the hole…

If Reeves had not identified himself as a SEAL this story would never have happened. The evidence is abundant and he readily withdrew his own copy as soon as he was called out for it.

Doug may be a diver but he is not a SEAL and not a SEAL diver.

The letter is essentially a name and innuendo contrivance with some malarkey about willfully setting himself up for failure. WTF?

Doug, why do you refer to grad school when you were seeking a B.S degree? In many places, an undergraduate degree precedes graduate programs, though not always.

Put the shovel down, Doug, stop digging. See if The Hair will grant you an absolution! Haha, and do it on a Zoom call so we can all watch 🙂

    • rgr1480 says:

…Doug, why do you refer to grad school when you were seeking a B.S degree? In many places, an undergraduate degree precedes graduate programs, though not always….

I’m not buying his “Navy Seal Diver” bullshit … and I’m not defending the man; but, he could have received an undergraduate degree from a graduate school.

I got my BA at a graduate school (Monterey Institute of International Studies). The Army sent to degree completion program and I selected MIIS. After I had enough credits for a BA I asked the Army to allow me to remain another six months for an MA, but they said “no!” — I had used up all their good will!! (^__^)

Anyway, I’m not defending the man; but a BA from a graduate school is possible.

  4. Contractor1803 says:

Did he serve under illustrious Navy Seal Frank Harwell? He writes like he did

  5. Daisy Cutter says:

The African American Seal Corman [sic] laughed at his injury.

  6. ChipNASA says:

    I’m still calling Bullshit.
With this, I’m thinking that a WHOLE LOT more DETAILS will come out and cause old Dougie here to BAIL and HIDE, and SPIN and BULLSHIT MORE to cover up his LIES and man what BALLS GALL this sperm burper has to try to ‘splain his experiences.
I’m glad I dropped the The Hemisphere of Insults®™ on this stinky log of gorilla shit

  7. SgtM says:

He is not the quitting type, then he quit. Cannot make this shit up.

  8. M48DAT says:

If I didn’t know any better, this guy sounds and spells like he’s 13 years old.

    • Green Thumb says:

      Yeah.

All-Points Logistics really needs to improve its professional development courses.

    • Ex-PH2 says:

No, no: 13 years old? Nuh-uh. The kids in my 2nd grade class could spell better than he does. Of course, that was when kids were taught to spell and read and write and do real arithmetic.

    • QMC says:

It hurt my eyes having to squint to read all of that email. Once I did, it hurt my brain.

    • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

WELL, Douglas Robert Reeves DID complete the course of “Introduction to Business” while he was in the Navy, I wonder if Douglas Robert Reeves actually remembered anything from it? Douglas Robert Reeves sure does like to spin about on his claims, will Douglas Robert Reeves lawer up and Bernath all over the place? Douglas Robert Reeves has a chili feed in Nevada awaiting his attendance as well.

  9. Daisy Cutter says:

You either have the qualifications in your official military records…

… or you have a story.

Reeves falls into the second category.

  10. Gwdusn says:

Let’s see. He doesn’t know how to spell, as in ‘Corman’ (Corpsman), and ‘Spruce’ (Spruance). You don’t go to grad school to get a bachelors degree, you go to grad school to get a masters degree. If I recall, the First Gulf War was in 1991, 4 years after he got out. He stated previously that he spent 18 months in training at Coronado, but he graduated Boot Jan 77 and reported to the David R. Ray Aug 77, right at 6 months. I can’t find him listed as an RN in CA, either.

  11. tshe says:

So, let me get this straight – he purposely failed the final written exam on purpose. Then, he was called on the carpet for it presumably because they knew he was capable of passing the test.

Sounds like he went through the entire BUD/S program only to thumb his nose at the SEAL community.

He attended BUD/S out of spite. I think I got it now.

    • MarineDad61 says:

      tshe,
Tanking the final exam? He doesn’t explain his reasons for that.
Costing the Navy and the US Gov’t how much in wasted training?
      And then, 40 years later,
wanting the fame and credit he pissed away?
      Ugh.

    • Forest Bondurant says:

That was my take away as well…

Board of Inquiry: “So lets get this strait. You failed the written test because you have dyslexia, and as such does not indicate your own willingness to drop out or fail out of BUD/S? Do we have this correct?”

Reeves: “Yes, that is correct, Gentlemen.”

(The BOI members look at each other with confusion and astonished amazement, and nod collectively in agreement.)

Board of Inquiry: “Our mistake then. Please see to it that you pick up your SEAL Trident insignia on your way out. You are dismissed.”

      Reeves: “Thank you, Sir.”

      (The End)

  12. Ex-PH2 says:

The fellow doth protest too much, methinks!

1 – As noted above, he can’t spell at all.

2 – Still referring to SEALs as Seals, whereas Seals are a completely different part of the seagoing pinniped animal kingdom, composed of a wide variety of species of Seals.

3 – Can’t get his timeframe or facts coordinated and straightened out.

4 – Doesn’t even need a shovel to keep digging that hole deeper and deeper.

5 – Boring, boring, boring, almost at the bernathian level of it.

  13. OldManchu says:

He took exams in grad school while getting his bachelor degree?

Sounds like that M-80 went off deep in his ass where it damaged his brain.

    • A Proud Infidel®™ says:

Maybe he accidentally lit that M80 off while trying to launch a flaming squirrel calling for a MEDEVAC for his fractured taint?

    • rgr1480 says:

He took exams in grad school while getting his bachelor degree?

Some graduate schools offer an 18-month master’s program. Students with undergrad credits can be admitted/transferred in. This could be our “Seal Diver”‘s case.

My alma mater, Monterey (now Middlebury)Institute of International Studies) has such a program:

      http://www.middlebury.edu/newsroom/archive/2017-news/node/548400

As I said in an above comment, I received my BA at grad school.

[EMPHASIS: I’m not defending the “Seal Diver”‘s other claims … but a BA from a grad school is possible.]

  14. KoB says:

    Bwaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

A Google Foo search of the embellishing POS Douglas Robert Reeves name and the FIRST (ht 2…oh…wait…that would be ME) hit gives a linky to the MP/VG post of said embellisher. Heh heh. The inherwebz are forever…BEYOTCH! SUFFER!

TINS…there I was, stationed at an Army Post in NC when I was dispatched to a training camp ’bout 20 miles away from Main Post to give a briefing on Imagery Interpretation of Aerial Photos to some fellas that wanted to wear the green hats. There were also some cats that were the initial Alphabet Force, very seekrit squirrel, in attendance. We shared C-Rat peaches and pound cake along with some grilled snake. Alas, an offer to swap peanut butter and cracker rations for one of them purty green hats didn’t get me one. But I was at the graduating ceremony and infiltrated the after party with a case of Cold Beers. Odd how I can’t claim to be a green BayRhett or an Alphabet Force Vet. So unfair!

  15. Jay says:

Full of sound and fury signifying NOTHING. Guy drops a lot of names, hazy details, and a LOT of misspelling. Just because you served in the Gulf 4 YEARS before BS does NOT make you a DS Vet.

    Asshole.

I never stated I was a Navy Seal, period. That is part of the false narrative and reports that came out of this. In my biography I stated that I was a navy seal diver. If you look at my records, that is true. Lt. Peter E. Tonnies certified me on August 17, 1977. BUDS stands for Basic Underwater Demolition Seal. It was an acronym for Seal Training.

Uhhhhh….. he’s calling someone who is widely known for sniffing out fakers a liar?

Aisn’t that kind of like the Big Old Pot calling the kettle black????

  18. Dwight Death Ray says:

It has been a long time since I got out of the Army (1977) and Air Force (1980), and perhaps the Navy was different, but I doubt it.

I went to a 20 week Air Traffic Control course and several months of OJT. If you failed out of the class in week 19, or didn’t make it in OJT, you were not ever considered an Air Traffic Controller by any stretch of the imagination.

This clown claims he purposely failed in the last week of class. All this qualifies him for is a Greyhound ticket home. Sorry, not a SEAL/BUDS.

    • USMCMSgt (Ret) says:

Same goes for USMC Recruit Training, or any follow on training after that.

A person can show up at one of the recruit depots and get administratively dropped and sent home during week 7, even after training has commenced – but that still doesn’t make a person a Marine.

Fuckers like this guy don’t even try.

  19. Hatchet says:

Res Ipsa Loquitur/ The Thing Speaks for Itself or Let a Moron be a Moron..

    – FACT – Absolutely NO USN BUPERS record of Reeves completing ANY aspect of SEAL training EXISTS.

    – FACT – while Reeves cites a lot of details of his alleged and so-called Navy SEAL career, Reeves supports NONE of this with any documentation – which interestingly, he claims he has and WILL NOT PRODUCE ANY EVIDENCE THEREOF.

Nope. Same old I’m a Real-deal-Navy-SEAL-trope – e’body else is LYING and in spite of every absence of my Official Navy records produced, I’M TELLING THE GOD’S HONEST TRUTH. And therefore I AM ENTITLED to wear the Trident I DIDN’T EARN.

Bottom-line: this is one exceedingly boring, boring, boring bernathian-level FUNKY MONKEY(aka – LYING LITTLE COCKSUCKER).

SOMEONE NEEDS TO CALL DON SHIPLEY-PRONTO!!

Man, I would LOVE to see – NO, PAY TO SEE this POS’s scalp hang’n off Shipley’s war belt..

  20. tshe says:

I have a friend that went to school to become a Registered Nurse.

She passed the Pharmacology class and it was put in her records. She eventually dropped out of the program and did not receive her RN.

To her credit, she does not go around saying she is an RN because she completed the Pharmacology class.

Is there a pattern forming here?

Wiki history of USS David R. Ray (DD-971),
which does NOT line up at all with
Doug Reeves’ version of when and where he was.

We see his active duty service dates (on Page 1).
We see the deployment history of DD-971 (here).
Yes, the Ray saw Desert Shield service,
but Doug Reeves wasn’t in the military in 1990.

Someone has a lot (more) explaining to do,
since his own claims of when and where don’t match up.

  25. Robert Echo Mike says:

Just checked the 1976 Naval Register (lists all the officers in the Navy). No Peter E. Tonnies listed, in fact no one with that last name. [A year before Reeves claims Tonnies certified him, but if T. were a LT, he would have been on active duty in 1976].

  26. SFC D says:

“BUDS stands for Basic Underwater Demolition Seal. It was an acronym for Seal Training”.

I may be a lowly, nautically-challenged Signal Puke, But I’m fairly certain that failing BUD/S does not make you a seal. Even Jesse Ventura knows that.

    • Hatchet says:

Hell! I remember when Don Shipley was asked if Jesse Ventura had ever been a Real-deal Navy SEAL and it was so controversial that Don Shipley actually devoted almost an entire video to it. The very best Reeves will ever hope to have(other than the SEAL Trident he probably bought on eBay) is, Don Shipley calling up Reeves to ask ‘Hi Dougie, this is Don Shipley – WERE YOU A NAVY SEAL’?

  27. CWORet says:

Man, MD61 and Hatchet have been particularly relentless and brutal today. Glad my name isn’t Doug Reeves.

I imagine one day after he passes his grandchildren will wonder about him. A bit of research, and this is the legacy they find. He probably should have done a little lurking around MP and TAH before going full potato and kicking the hornet nest.

You should be proud to be an inaugural crew member of the Ray,

      — You made the choice to poop all over your good service with claims that are impossible, due to your years of active duty, and your documented FOIA redacted public military service records.

Like MarineDad61, I too prefer being referred to as blunt, tenacious and also….relentless. Bottom-line – for the privilege of serving my country(Canada) and for the very little I really did and as long as there’s valour vultures and thieves out there, I’m going to be the guy that get’s an evil look on his face, folds his arms, sneers and says ‘Uh huh, no-way – not on my Watch – Never’. Sooner or later you’ll disregard procedure, disobey an order, or just get drunk. You can’t help it.(This applies to Dougie here) ” You’re too old, too prideful, too stupid to change. I’m going to enjoy seeing you fall, Highway. Now get out and send in that idiot, Ring.

I think that about good ole Dougie here and he’s about to get (If he’s not starting to gape yet) his collective shit pushed in by the Intrawebs and everyone that’s pointing out this story is a pile of steaming, stinking, sloth scat!!.

  30. SFC D says:

      • Tallywhagger says:

Hell, I used to keep a boat at Little Creek Marina in Virginia Beach! That’s almost the same thing as being stationed with SEALs. And on Friday nights, there were SEALs, everywhere, particuarly around payday.

Based on the article, Mr. Reeves might have written his biography in a manner that does not meet the criteria of the self-appointed investigators of this webpage, as well as visitors.
What concerns me is that the owners of this page are dragging this man’s name through the mud because of their own personal criteria for how veterans should represent themselves.
His livelihood and reputation are at stake,
and this article has opened him up to a lot of abuse.
Would I have written my bio differently? Sure.
The author of this article obviously would have.
But Mr. Reeves has decided to write it his way.
Now, you have basically publically shamed him based on your own standards. I find this approach lacks justice for him, and gives the appearance that you are a group of headhunters in the night looking for your next victims.
      Big thumbs down.

You presume to speak for Mr. Reeves, yet you do not.
Reeves was given several opportunities to explain his claims and he was defiant, so I don’t think he would have written it differently. Although you may have, we didn’t post the article on what someone may have done differently, we post it on what is out there in the public – and still is, I might add.

We don’t expect you to understand, but those men that have earned the label Navy SEAL do so at great personal sacrifice to themselves and the brothers they fight and die beside. This is not like burping and asking to be excused, the transgression is a deep one and Reeves should fully understand this.

When you say “dragging a man’s name through the mud because of their own personal criteria for how veterans should represent themselves” please take note of our format.
A = here are the claims the individual is making (with screenshots)
B = this is what the official military records say and
      C) A does not equal B. Very simple and in the person’s own words.

So why do you have an interest in this case vs. the many others that we post?

A few questions and no, I’m not a vet so just be nice.

    1. I thought the MOH was known as the MOH to all in the service. Calling it the CMOH seems a bit odd for someone who served.

    2. Is there a SEAL Diver designation. I thought SEALs were kind of like commandos who were special ops. Divers could be special ops, I guess but when I think of Navy Divers as a group, I think of people who are doing more salvage work. Please, I’m not trying to get insulting. It’s an honest question.

    • penguinman000 says:

      Andy,

      In answer to your questions.

      1. It’s common for folks to get confused about the Medal of Honor and add Congressional to the front. During the presentation of the award there is verbiage along the lines of it being presented on behalf of the US Congress. And the Congressional Medal of Honor Society can confuse people even more. I know lots of folks in uniform during my 20 years that got Congressional part wrong.

      2. There is no SEAL diver designation. Never has been. There are divers and there are SEALS. Completely separate jobs. All SEALS carry the appropriate NECs (additional job classifications) for their diving status but no divers are classified as SEALs. A quick check of Wikipedia will provide tons of accurate information on this topic.

In order to be awarded an NEC one must complete all of the required training. Wash out of the class 5 minutes before graduation and that individual is a never has been.

Doug “Dunnage” Reeves appears to have some legitimate service but none of it involved him being a SEAL or a Seal diver.

      • Andy Kravetz says:

I figured on the wash-out part but I was wondering about the diver part. I get they are two completely different jobs and I knew that there is a MOS or a job for divers within the NAVY. I just don’t know if there was a specialty within the SEAL Community. Some might say the SWICs are SEALs. They aren’t but they got through similar pipelines.

Appreciate the information and glad to see the site is full of people who are willing to teach.

    Public Information:

The LT mentioned by Reeves is Peter Ewald Toennies.

In 1996, he was a Captain and was the Commander of Naval Special Warfare Group Two:

    https://scholar.lib.vt.edu/VA-news/VA-Pilot/issues/1996/vp960721/07210050.htm

You can find Toennies’ current picture here as well as a short synapsis of him being a Navy SEAL:

    http://jimjewell.com/a-pocket-of-resistance/heroes-mine/

Research indicated Toennies was Commissioned in 1971.

What I gathered is that Reeves embellished his time with the US Navy, i.e. he attended BUD/S, went through the SCUBA or Diving Phase of BUD/S (I saw the documents with Toennies name), but washed out.

Hmmm, supported the 71st RQS out of Moody in 1999 in Kuwait (Ali Al Salem) during Southern Watch, guess that WOULD ALLOW me to claim PJ status.

Kidding aside I’m proud of my time as an Aircrew Life Support troop. Worked with some awesome crew dogs.

Spent 17 out of 23 under AFSOC, got to meet and support SEALs, PJs, CCT, Green Berets, Rangers etc.

Had 4 pilots eject when I was under TAC/ACC all survived. My name was all over their parachutes, survival kits, Helmets and masks. I had conducted their ejection seat training, survival training etc.

I’m a graduate of the USAF Combat Survival School (SV-80-A) and Water Survival School (SV-86-A). Doesn’t make me a SERE troop, although we did a lot of what they did.

I have no need to be anything bigger or better. Loved my job, did it to the best of my ability, never turned down a deployment opportunity or an opportunity to support our sister services.
