Walter Mitty-Type Jailed for Stealing From 94 y/o Father

| July 16, 2021

The YorkPress in the UK writes about a Walter Mitty-type character who is going to jail for stealing from his 94 y/o father.  For those of you not familiar with how they do things in Britain, they refer to people that engage in Stolen Valor as ‘Walter Mitty’s, or ‘Walts’ for short.

‘Walter Mitty’ character who claimed he saved Brad Pitt is jailed for theft

By Simon Walton

A ‘WALTER Mitty’ character who lied about being in the SAS and guarding the Royal family has been jailed after stealing from his 94-year-old dad.

Edward Stewart, 53, set up a fake online profile in 2016, masquerading as a former member of the elite special-forces unit “to impress women”, York Crown Court heard.

His profile claimed he had once been on SAS missions in Syria and Afghanistan and provided personal protection for Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.

He also claimed he protected Brad Pitt and Princess Diana, the court heard.

After his lies were exposed, he moved in with his elderly father, who trusted him to manage his finances.

Prosecutor Matthew Collins said that instead of looking after his father, Stewart used his bank card to steal from him.

Stewart, of Harrogate, admitted one count of stealing £1,666 from his father during a four-week spree between June and July 2019.

He had been charged with one count of fraud and three counts of theft but denied all allegations apart from the one count of theft.

He was due to face trial on the other allegations, but the family decided not to pursue these charges and they were allowed to lie on court file.

Mr. Collins said Stewart had been welcomed back into the family after his lies were exposed by internet vigilantes ‘The Walter Mitty Hunters Club’, which exposes people with fake military pretensions. Stewart’s boastful fake posts included one in which he claimed to have suffered a wound from a knife attack while protecting Brad Pitt.

Abbi Whelan, for Stewart, said he had made attempts to repay the money and had lost his old job following his arrest.

He had found new work as a delivery driver but would lose that job and his home if he were jailed.

She added: “He is aware that he will never have any contact with his father again.”

Judge Simon Hickey labeled Stewart a “complete Walter Mitty character” who had taken his father’s money for his “own selfish ends”. Stewart was jailed for eight months.

Before you pass judgement and blame Stewart for heisting money from his 94 y/o father, think about how hard it is to make money after the Brad Pitt gigs dried up.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty remains my favorite Danny Kaye movie.
I haven’t seen the newer version and I’m not sure I actually care to.

Not being a (big, little, or any) fan of Ben Stiller, I was prepared to be disappointed in the new version. But, it was surprisingly very good. I would recommend it, say, if you could find a DVD copy in your public library, or in the $5 bin at Wally World. A 4 of 5 stars.

I miss my dad. He would have just given it to me.
Often did.

Ditto – each and every day. The day our family Doc told me that my Dad would have to spend the rest of his days at Sunnybrook Veterans wing(dementia), was one of the worst days of my life. Only thing that made me feel a bit better – Doc would tell me ‘’Time for some role-reversal – your Dad helped to raise you, it’s now time for you to look after him’. A few days later, Dad would hand me his cheque book and bank card, tell me to empty and close up the house and sell it and continue to pay his monthly bills as they came in. It was one of the hardest things my Dad ever asked me to do..Would’ve rather gouge my heart out slowly with dull knife than disappoint him, never mind steal from the Man who always gave more than he got.

Maybe ol’ POS Walt shoulda called up Angelina and got him a baby sitting gig. Heard a rumor that she was kinda dried up too.

I love the definition “Walter Mitty”. I’ll have to start using that. (No insult to Danny Kaye).

Talk to James Thurber. He wrote the story it was based on.

Wow… What an ugly and vulgar stain to have on one’s own soul – being placed in a position of trust for the safety and welfare one’s own ailing father, then stealing monies from said ninety year old, sick and debilitated father after Dad had served honourably in the Coldstream Guards(BTW, a lot of SAS personnel come from the ranks of the Coldstream and Household Guards). Stealing from a Man who apparently loved and raised his son to be proper and honest only to be repaid in his twilight years with deceit and theft.
Then to compound matters, Eddie also claims to be former SAS with ties to the Royal Household? Eddie needs to be waterboarded, be given a six month kick in the nuts and when his testicular swelling subsides a bit, he’s promptly neutered so his kind will not further contaminate our Earth. Quite the waste of skin…

Big error on dear ol’ dad’s part.

Well, to address the elephant in the room – Brad Pitt is now walking around without any protection.

MCPO USN

Well, seeing how things turned out for Princess Diana he may be better off.

Saw the original flick back in the early 1950’s when it was re released in the movie theaters.
