Volcanoes: Update for Friday

| March 27, 2021

Iceland’s Baby Volcano (unofficially referred to as “Bob”) is growing up quickly. Used to be just a hole in the ground, belching hot gases and some lava. In barely one week Bob has grown to be a teenager volcano and may have a long, long period of eruption life ahead of him.

It’s great for Iceland’s tourist business, too, because the island is letting helicopter services ferry people out to the site. The video is live, courtesy of rus dot is.

There are many, many active volcanoes busily going off, venting their opinions, right now on the planet. That includes Etna, on Sicily, which has been aggressively erupting for nearly two years now, in addition to all those Pacific islands that are the byproducts of volcanic eruptions over long periods of time. We do have a Navy base there at Sigonella.

And Japan’s tally of active volcanoes is 141, with 47 of them listed as very active and being carefully watched.  https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2327.html\

I think for now, we’re pretty well off, so enjoy the show from Iceland. If this baby volcano does erupt into something “special”, the news media will take it as a disastrous even and we, of course are living in the ‘shadow” of doom…. Or something.  Volcano Discovery is keeping tabs on all the volcanic activity going on everywhere, at this link:  https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/erupting_volcanoes.html

I think the media people all need some serious therapy, because they seem to be unable to go even one day without reporting a disaster of some kind …. but that’s just me.

Believe I read the last Icelandic volcano explosion put more cee-oh-two into the atmosphere in one day than man has in the last century? Someday a true history of man will be written… and will reference our exaggerated sense of our importance to the old joke about the ant having sex with the elephant.

Etna is Europe’s most active volcano. Fortunately its eruptions are on the mild side, unless of course you live on it.
One such eruption, a group of our ground-pounders* rented a car to get a closer look. Of course the Carabinieri had the roads to the site blocked.
Undaunted, our intrepid GPs flashed their military IDs and claimed they were from the US Navy Geological Survey, and were admitted into the eruption zone.

There is no US Navy Geological Survey, of course.

*Affectionate term for the maintainers and admin folks in the squadron. They had a couple names for us.

Being fully aware of American sailors never-ending quest for their Sicilian women, the Carabinieri probably thought they said US Navy Gynecological Survey…😜

We also have a term for barking doggies, and there is no affection involved at all.

The disaster that the media needs to be reporting on is the one called Congress. All that they can produce is hot gasses. The American Patriots are ready to vent their frustrations and erupt into something special. When it comes, it will make Mount St Helens pale to a firecracker in comparison.

I guess all of this volcanic activity is caused by Gorbull Warming too? Or is it Trump’s fault? Has the amount of carbon gasses reached the same levels as what Lurch Skerry has spewed from the private jet he flies around in?

Interesting side note: curiosity prompted me to go to an online map to check out the distance from the NAS to Mt. Etna. Checking out the aircraft on the ramp at Sigonella, I spotted the outline of a distinctly non-naval craft sitting off by itself with a crowd of service vehicles around it: an Air Force U2.

Just to be sure, I checked the ramp at Beale AFB, CA, the AF home of the U2 program, and yup, that’s what it is. They used to surveille Russia out of Adana Air Base in Turkey but I guess with our relations with that country in the crapper, Sigonella is the fallback position.

Where are the pictures?
