Off-Duty Detective Cleared In Shooting Death Of Neighbor

Kathy Reakes
An off-duty Rockland County detective who shot and killed his Orange County neighbor has been cleared of any wrongdoing by a grand jury.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced that on Wednesday, March 17, an Orange County grand jury declined to file charges against an off-duty Town of Ramapo Police detective who shot a man on Monday, July 6, at the detective’s residence in the Town of Cornwall.

An investigation determined that the man, who suffered from mental health issues and lived next-door to the detective, had shown up at the detective’s house unannounced and attempted to stab the detective with a knife, the DA’s Office said.

The man was shot by the detective and died.

Armored truck crew shoots robbery suspect at North Austin bank
An armed passenger of an SUV stepped out and demanded money from a guard as he unloaded an ATM.

By David Struett
An armored truck crew shot a gunman who tried to rob them Friday morning at a bank in the North Austin neighborhood.

An armed passenger of an SUV stepped out and demanded money from a guard as he unloaded an ATM, according to a statement from Chicago police.

The security guard, who worked on the truck, took out his own gun and fired shots, striking the person in the “center of his torso area,” police said.

The robbery happened about 8:40 a.m. at a BMO Harris Bank branch at 4959 W. North Ave., police and the FBI said.

The wounded male drove off in the dark-colored SUV and was not in custody, police said. He was last seen going west on North Avenue.

The FBI responded to the incident, according to an FBI spokesperson.

Why a man in his own house is not justified in using deadly force against a mentally deficient individual wielding a knife attempting to stab you can only be answered by the people! Apparently stating it in a document for all to know and be known is not enough these days!

Is there a North Austin neighborhood of Chicago? I thought it was in Austin, TX, but after reading the story I am not sure…especially since it is reported in the Chicago Sun Times!

Another that took a knife to a gunfight. *sigh* Come at me, in my house, with a knife or any other weapon, and I will act as your Judge, Jury, AND Executioner.

North Austin is a ‘hood in Chiraq, it’s shown up here before. Seems as if the Southside is not the only baddest part of town anymore. Hope the SoB bled out while driving away. Musta been a fairly quiet weekend in Chicongo, only 4 DRT and 16 others wounded this time. Last weekend the count was 40 shot, with 5 being DRT. DRT year to date is already 114.

Cute little Remington hide-away. They musta got the bugs worked out, homeboy seems to be content with his two. Wonder how many people took advantage of their offer to swap their FIRST (ht 2 API) production run for a 1911 R1? Maybe they shoulda bought a design of His Most Saintly JMB (Howitzer Be His Name) to begin with? Betcha can’t find the R51 today for that price indicated in ’16.

Austin is a Chicago neighborhood according to a quick search.

Lots of jurisdictions require that any homicide go before a grand jury, which then decides whether to charge or no-bill the person who caused the death.

While the 9mm is more powerful (for the R51) the original model 51 Remington .380 was smaller and aesthetically a far more attractive gun. Bit of a booger to work on, though.

New Jersey, that’s why.

It goes to grand jury so that it cannot be presented to a grand jury years later when the political winds shift, usually by a new DA. Sending it to grand jury closes the case and it cannot be reopened after that. At least that’s why they do it around here.

Planet Ord

A grand jury no bill closes the case permanently. It cannot be reopened years later for whatever reason. At least that’s why they do it around here. We know that all officer involved shootings will go to the GJ. No matter what. It prevents a different DA with different political motivations from reopening the case years later.

Sorry for the double post. I didn’t think the first one went through.

Gotta be some “claw hammer” stories out there.

I checked out the attempted armoured car holdup and saw that the company was Garda using a 2 human being crew with one inside the truck and the other doing the atm cash replenishment. When I was the driver on an ATM route, I went in with the ATM man and acted as the guard keeping an eye out while their was another Man inside the van we used. The Man inside the van was titled the Messenger and was supposed to go inside and open the safe with a two part combination but asked me to do it at each stop because he had some issues about doing it. We came out of the stop one time and he was going into diabetic shock I think they called it and I went into his bag and found the glucose tablets and had to force one into his mouth until he came out of it. This happened twice that I had to do it and awhile later, he was put into the vault to work and his gun was taken away. The ATM Man used to send me down to the truck sometimes to get wood brick blocks for the currency and I never thought anything of it until he got busted for stealing. It then occurred to me that it was always when we were inside an enclosed ATM room with multiple machines when I left the room. We found out that he had a prior arrest record when he put in for a target permit. Some how he slipped by on the initial investigation for the work gun permit. He came from a company where the owner and his wife were stealing $$$$$ from his company. I remember when I was working nights, after I finished my route, I joined a convoy of trucks to go out to Long Island and remove all the gold, silver and currency for an audit at our Brooklyn facility. We took on a number of their employees among them some ATM repair tech. One of the techs lived a couples of miles… Read more »
