Rent rates nosedive in cities beset by fiery but mostly peaceful protests, COVID blamed

| January 27, 2021

Apartment List has used their vast data to note that nationally, rent has decreased 1.5% year over year. A 2-3% increase is normal. Rents nosedived, according to Apartment List because of the COVID pandemic, the most in the above listed cities. COVID likely can be blamed for the national downward trend, but I think there are some other significant, common sense factors causing the dramatic drop off in several of these cities.

You’ll also notice some significant non-COVID similarities in the worst ten cities for property owners. All ten cities were beset by violent protests last summer. All of these cities have also seen large increases in the overall crime rate. Many of these cities have activist district attorneys who have promised not to prosecute many crimes.

Apparently people don’t want to live in places like San Francisco, where the city (with federal money) is putting up homeless drug addicts in hotels and where the DA (former personal translator for a brutal communist dictator, the son of two convicted terrorists and raised by the leaders of a domestic terrorist organization) promises not to prosecute crime. Seattle had a weeks-long chunk of the city, including a taxpayer owned police station, become a breakaway state with deadly consequences. Similarly, Minneapolis still has a couple block no-go zone around the site of George Floyd’s death.

Naw, this is all COVID’s fault. Damn Trump and his poor leadership. Thank God Biden’s got a plan to fix it, right? Aw, shit.

ummmm…. “over 600,000 deaths?”

I don’t think so. Not what CDC says as of today.

How screwed up are you when 2 of the 3 best monthly reports are Chicago and Oakland?

AW1Ed

That the proverbial iceberg’s tip. There’s an entire industry relying on rentals, not just landlords.

I’d say the migration from Chiraq and Oakland peaked some time ago, and the other burgs are just starting to feel the loss on a rising tide.

Everywhere else, possession of 1 gram of heroin or meth is a felony. The Seattle city prosecutor will not charge anyone possessing less than 5 grams. Seattle is a dumpster fire.

Berliner

Correction… will not prosecute anyone possessing less than 5 grams. Need coffee.

Andy11M

watch “Seattle is dying”, short of killing someone, they don’t want to prosecute anything.

Other than the FEW nice things I’ve heard about San Jose, there is not a single city on that list I would consider moving to. I’ll stay right here in the boring Midwest suburban sprawl I call home.

Might as well blame the Chinesecommunist Originated Virus Infecting Disease of 2019. Everybody that died in 2020 died from that disease.

Or blame President Trump…Everything else that has gone wrong for the last 4 years was his fault too.

I’m shocked Minneapolis is #10. Figured that shit pit would be top 3.

Don’t forget they burned down brand new apartment buildings as well creating a housing shortage for those stupid enough not to flee.

I’m not too many minutes from the east end of I-70. I can get there and head West if need be. There’s a LOT of USA between Bal’more and Cove Fort, UT.

Meanwhile in our little corner of nowhere the real estate market has exploded. Despite living in a mostly rural area there are zero houses for sale with ten or more acres of land within a 60 mile radius. There are also zero apartments available for rent in the three cloesest cities and rents have shot up on average 25%. Zillow says the prices grew by 18% last year on single family homes.

All in a state ranked in top ten worst for covid but with practically no candle lighting peaceful protests. Isnt that a odd coincidence?

Just to clarify we are getting an influx of city refugees from NY, DC and NOVA. They are paying cash for stuff and buying it within a couple of days of houses hitting the market or even same day in many cases. Builders are building like crazy but they can’t keep it with demand. The small city where I work the population grew by an estimated 12% last year alone. The only good thing that came out of it was a 15% raise last year since trying recruit and retain people to be popo in the age of lawless municipal governments and demonization by the media is a non starter.

Florida, right? That’s my story. Former gubbament worker bee at the Pentagon; current retiree in a small Orlando suburb. Still miss DC; do not miss the bureaucracy.

Well it’s amazing how this article doesn’t talk about the peaceful protest that destroyed a lot of these
Cities livability. I guess they are afraid of AWS
or Google pulling the plug on them

Green Thumb

No desire on my end to live in any of those places anyway.

This is a hit job on the new administration and its policies. There is no way that all those mostly peaceful protests against evilz racizz polize brutality resulted in economic losses.

People are not that stupid. They know they have now the greatestez Prezident evah. The economy is going to grow like never befoth, and every antifa activist is going to get rewarded for the fruits of their hard labor.

Looks like the under reporting of covid deaths is hitting the news cycle. Expect a bit more of this in the future. The things that Cuomo did were stupid and led to thousands of unnecessary deaths.

Cuomo and our new HHS Secretary may be the greatest mass murderers in our history as a nation

Jury is still out on Whitmer, but it appears the decimation of Detroit prevented her from joining this rarified list.
