“As I have stood in the crosshairs of those who target Second Amendment freedoms, I’ve realized that firearms are not the only issue. No, it’s much, much bigger than that. I’ve come to understand that a cultural war is raging across our land, in which, with Orwellian fervor, certain acceptable thoughts and speech are mandated.” — Charlton Heston

The .45 S&W 625 is a nice alternative to the .44 629.
A cool upgrade to the 625 is to modify the .45 Colt version to also accept moon-clips of .45 ACP.
Not a lot of folks do that well, and there are significant issues. Primary is that the .45 Colt case is .300 longer than a .45ACP, so you can expect a significant accuracy hit. If you do that on a pre ’89 gun, the .451 ACP bullet may not work well in an older .45 Colt .454 barrel. Second, the conversion will probably cost as much as just getting a .45 ACP gun.. and the modification will probably detract from the value of the gun, not add. Last, the 625 is chambered in .45ACP, not .45 Colt. I suspect you are thinking of a model 25. If so, best to leave the original cylinder unmodified and buy a second cylinder to play with and remachine.
625-5 is .45 Colt so are some of the “Mountain Guns”.
.454 is the old bore for 19th century .45 Colt. It is meant for soft lead bullets and BP propellant. Modern guns typically use the same bore for both ACP and Colt loads. The ammunition typically uses same-diameter projectiles, sometimes the exact same projectiles.
625s in both calibers use the same barrel, and work well with modern Colt and ACP ammo. So does the dual-cylinder Ruger Blackhawk.
I fired a modified 625-5 as described. Accuracy was comparable for both calibers, and more than adequate for 50 yards.
I buy a gun, and modify them, to shoot not sell.
.454 ran surprisingly long; up to 1989 in some guns. I agree it is an older standard, I shoot .456 bullets in BP .45 Colt cartridges. And you are right on the chambering in the 625-5 (but you did say 625… forgive me for nitpicking!) Used to have a convertible Blackhawk, .452 barrel and was equally as mediocre with either round. But a long freebore (which is what you effectively wind up with in this instance) is generally not as conducive to fine accuracy. You obviously got a good one.
Wasn’t mine alas, but a relative’s. Very good gunsmith and meant for serious use. Not a bullseye gun, but IDPA/carry.
In this current dem-panic, multi-caliber guns have added utility.
Don’t mess with granny. At a spry 67, she can’t beat you, she can’t outrun you, so she’ll just shoot you. And a life sentence is no longer a deterrent.
Wait…….what!? Sixty-seven!? That’s my age! How did I get to be that old? I don’t FEEL that old. Damned sneaky birthdays.

Still hoping for a FGS Trifecta! Sorry I haven’t been posting much, but since my forced retirement, they took all of my computer equipment and all my phones as well! I am trying to get by on this old laptop until I have the chance to setup the new one I bought!
See you all soon!
Take care,
