Fang Fang, or Christine Fang, was reportedly an intelligence operative with China’s Ministry of State Security. She operated in California’s Bay Area from 2011 to 2015, where she used campaign fundraising, networking, her charm and romantic relationships to get close with politicians.
She developed substantial ties with California law makers as part of a political operation to influence US political groups.

A suspected Chinese intelligence operative developed extensive ties with local and national politicians, including a U.S. congressman, in what U.S. officials believe was a political intelligence operation run by China’s main civilian spy agency between 2011 and 2015, Axios found in a yearlong investigation.
Why it matters: The alleged operation offers a rare window into how Beijing has tried to gain access to and influence U.S. political circles.
While this suspected operative’s activities appear to have ended during the Obama administration, concerns about Beijing’s influence operations have spanned President Trump’s time in office and will continue to be a core focus for U.S. counterintelligence during the Biden administration.
The woman at the center of the operation, a Chinese national named Fang Fang or Christine Fang, targeted up-and-coming local politicians in the Bay Area and across the country who had the potential to make it big on the national stage.

For ‘c’, first, I’m not a Democrat. And second, even if I were, national security is more important than party.
The fact that we only discovered this woman because she met with a suspected MSS official (with diplomatic security) who was under surveillance is a tad bit worrying given that, if nothing else, two mayors were sleeping with a (presumably) younger foreign woman connected to various politicians and didn’t fucking investigate it as a security concern.

Well, since too much agreement between us would clearly be a sign of the apocalypse, I’ll point out that you and Lars talk past each other on the question of what China ‘is’.
Clearly, the Communist party runs China, and they’re hell-bent on infiltrating us, and practically everywhere else for that matter. But in terms of textbook ‘communism’, there’s not much of that in China’s ruling party. They’re happy to get rich – there’s no ‘public’ ownership of of industry. Hell, they’re second only to us -and likely to pass us at some point- in terms of the number of billionaires. But if you switch to historical comparisons, sure, well, you’ve got one party, and no dissent really allowed, which fits in with what we see in other ‘communist’ countries.
Economically, I’ve yet to hear a coherent explanation of how the hell they’re described as ‘communist’. Most people would probably say they’re (largely) state-capitalist now, with some pure capitalism as well.
And again, when you stop talking about the government and start talking about the people, it gets even less clear. I lived there for some time. I met a few communists. But I met a lot of capitalistic entrepreneurs out to earn a living for themselves.
There, plenty to disagree on again.
But no matter what you call them, their espionage efforts are massive, they’re great at playing the long game, and our elected officials need to be a bit wiser when it comes to these sorts of things.
