San Franciscans complaining of increased crime near hotels housing homeless

| November 13, 2020

Residents near hotels the City of San Francisco and the State of California are housing homeless people in are complaining about the increase in crime. Not just the “victim-less” crimes like open drug usage, daytime public sex act performances, and your other typical homeless issues. They’re complaining about increases in shootings, burglaries, and other major felonies. You’d think this would have been obvious to anyone with a lick of common sense, but common sense is a natural resource the people of California have lacked for some time.

Do the people running this cash cow see a problem? Of course not!

“Thousands of vulnerable people have been able to stay safely in place, which helped them tremendously and helped San Francisco in its remarkable efforts to contain the virus,” Abigail Stewart-Kahn, the Interim Director for San Francisco’s Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, said.

Stewart-Kahn says the program has been a tremendous success, so much so that two hotels will become permanent housing, creating 350 new units for homeless residents through the state’s Project Homekey program.

“One of those is The Granada and one of those is the Hotel Diva, we need to work really, really fast to move through all of the purchase and start moving people in as quickly as possible,” Stewart-Kahn said.

“Is it doing what it was intended to do? Is it helping people? I actually think it’s been very successful, I mean incredibly successful,” Randy Shaw said.

Shaw is the Executive Director of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, he says this program has helped make neighborhoods like the Tenderloin more safe. Instead of being on the street in front of people’s homes more than 2,000 formerly homeless people have been housed, which has also reduced the potential for the spread of Covid-19.

“People who are unhoused it’s a crisis for them. This became not only a crisis for them, but a health risk to everybody else,” Shaw said.

Even better is the pittance of a price for the help they’re giving these urban vagabonds and troubadours;

The city enlisted 29 hotels for the SIP program, which costs the city $10 million a month to operate. More than 2,000 people have been brought inside because of it, but the city has not been transparent throughout this process.

It only costs $10 MILLION? A month? Do the math, that’s $5,000 a month per person. Even with San Francisco’s notoriously high rental prices $5k will get you a very nice 1-3 bedroom in whichever neighborhood of the city you like.

The California brain trust is working overtime on this one. They’re going to ask FEMA to reimburse the city for some (or all) of the expense of this program. With Trump in charge, I’ll tell them fat chance. With Biden nominally running the show? Hunter is probably going to suddenly find himself on the board of directors for a few Bay-area hospitality corporations.

Thanks to the KoB for the tip on this one.

Same thing going on in Bangor Maine:

Good news is that they just opened a recreational pot shop within walking distance.

Same as in the Upper West Side of NYC.

I laugh every time i read about those snooty bastards complaints.

now now, Dummissar assures us that his cronies are the mostest honest and fairest politicians ever borned.

Dummissar is never wrong…just ask him.

So if the programs are failing or corrupt, it just has to be the republicans that don’t exist in these governments.

Commissar

Over cost does not mean “failing”.

Penguinman000

Your statement is correct on the surface. But stuffing a bullet hole with a tampon doesn’t stop the bleeding. It just keeps the blood off the floor.

Putting a bunch of addicts/mental health cases in a hotel and not addressing their medical needs isn’t effective or compassionate. It’s enabling them to kill themselves and cause significant damage to the area they are present in.

Throwing homeless, en masse, into hotels simply moves and concentrated the problems. Doesn’t solve shit.

It turns out addressing complex problems requires more thought/effort than can fit in a tweet or slogan.

Perhaps you should actually attempt to put some thought into things and not parrot bullet points you get from your local political officer.

Fuskin idiot.

11B-Mailclerk

I keep running into that tampon/wound crap in fiction, from authors who usually write well, and from real-world folks that should know better.

Penguinman000

Yeah, I also run across the occasion MD/DO or nurse teaching placement of tourniquets below the elbow/knee.

Even had an “instructor” at the academy saying playing dead in a firefight is acceptable. My buddy who was sitting behind me said he saw veins pop out of my head and I went beet red from the neck up.

There’s not many things that truly make me angry but jackasses teaching stuff that will get people killed sets me off.

11B-Mailclerk

Failing means failing. Over cost just makes it worse.

Spending $5000 per month per person on this is not a success. Especially as warehousing them is not fixing the problem, just moving it around. Especially if it creates more problems.

The Left likes to make things worse and say “see! We need to do more left-stuff!” And then double down.

Becoming a homeless magnet is not solving homelessness.

Note that FDR’s CCC and similar efforts were a promise of hard work and austere living. Thus they employed folks, not Warehouse them. Bums avoided most of it.

The self-inflicted drug stuff needs to be weeded out of programs, not coddled. Ditto the willing idle. The climate there is friendly to tent living. Make the shelter Spartan and the true bums will go elsewhere. Then sift for mental issues and target. Then sift for “will work for home” and leverage.

Simply burning luxury-rate per-person housing costs for what is soon to be run-down housing is not going to do anything good.

How about tent-to-home using Habitat for Humanity methods? A team could build Spartan low-income multi-unit housing and live in it. Even own it as a small business. Leverage pride of ownership and “I spent 800 hours building this. You will -not- shit it up!”

Habitat built housing that consistently survived Hurricane Andrew in Florida. In some neighborhoods, only the Habitat homes survived. They do -good- work.

My liberal mother-in-law (gets all her political info from CNN and facebook) can’t understand how I can think Jimmy Carter is a good man in many ways absolutely sucked at being President. Granted, it was not a good time to be President either.

Another great program is the VFW national home. They place vets/their families at risk for homelessness in housing (base style), feed them, educate them, medical care, psych care, the whole 9 yards. For up to 4 years. At no cost to them. And the program is completely funded by donations. The endstate is getting the families back on their feet.

No government funding is used to achieve a real solution to homelessness. And it damn sure isn’t $5k/month.

You know that Nanny Legosi and DiFi are getting paid from it somehow… I mean, that cash from Dominion only goes so far..

Ex-PH2

Why is this a surprise?

Next thing you know, we’ll see people getting $2,000/month for doing nothing… Oh, wait – that’s called welfare, isn’t it?

Deckie

Ahh and a Great Society we DID create, didn’t we?!

Ex-PH2

Why, yes, Deckie – so we did…. except that “we” doesn’t include you or me, does it? I didn’t create this, and neither you. 🙂

OWB

Aw, gee whiz. Who could have predicted a negative outcome? Only sane people.

But, if this is how San Franciscans want to spend their money, go for it, folks. Gives the rest of us something to laugh about.

Not that we need a good laugh in 202.

Retired Grunt

The problem is, its not just their money. It’s federal matching dollars. It’s requests to FEMA, etc… etc… plus now with Biden taking office It’s gonna be mo money mo money mo money. This money isn’t just for the “underrepresented” and ” disenfranchised” but soon, coming to a bank near you…. FEDERAL RELOCATION DOLLARS for all those who are able to successfully reach US soil. Oh boy. All these lefties wanting more and more for the FSA should have to prove a bank balance of less than 1k before they can run their mouths. That’s right, take all of their money first. Bwahahahaha

OWB

Spending THEIR $$ was the key in my statement. Completely agree that spending anyone else’s $$ on their pipedreams is foolish.

Poetrooper

If you have any substantial funds in an IRA you should be afraid…very afraid.

We always ask, “Just where do these fools think they’re going to get the money to do this crazy shit?”

Well, the trillions of dollars in all the savings plans and programs of hardworking but undeserving, racist, white Americans has to be a very enticing source of funds for the Democrats’ “equalizing” programs. And being government instituted and monitored programs, the government knows where every penny is.

Another ripe target is the equity you’ve built up in your homes which could be confiscated upon your death rather than going to your heirs.

If you want to keep what’s yours, you’re eventually going to have to fight for it.

Which is why they want you disarmed…

Fyrfighter

so Poe, are you saying, to paraphrase gun bunny, that the only reason they want to take our guns is because they’re planning to do some shit that will probably get them shot?

11B-Mailclerk

Ever hear some Leftoid/Marxoid raving about “imputed income” tax?

Oy, vey! What idiocy.

If you pay off your mortgage, you no longer owe someone that big fat check every month. Thus it is “imputed income” to be taxed.

Idiocy and envy, with the predictable disastrous result.

When I FIRST started reading this yesterday, I had a very serious WTF moment. Then I read it again giving me a YGTBFSM moment. A third read made me do the arithmetic. That is some shorely fuzzy new math that justifies spending $5 large a month to put a bunch of junkies up. And going by the comments above, this is not the only place it is happening. No wonder we have a 27T$ debt in this Country. And why we can’t have nice things.

I have exactly ZERO (0) phuques to give for homeless people…especially homeless drunks or junkies. My taxpayer dollars should NOT be used to pay for your piss poor life decisions. There are just WAY yonder too many programs and opportunities for people that may have gotten down on their luck, to grab themselves by their bootstraps, pull themselves out of whatever hole they have gotten themselves into, and become decent, productive members of Society. I say put them in DiFi and Granny Nan’s gated compounds. Those 2 and their cohorts are prolly making the kickback monies from all of these payments, and the junkies would like the gourmet ice creams.

As I’ve commented before, I have a niece, nephew in law, and 3 grand nephews that are dead center of that cesspool. They feel that the ministry that they work with has called them to do God’s work there. When I correspond with them I always ask how things are going in Sodom by the Bay, Gomorrahfornia. I always get a very nervous laugh from the niece. The children haven’t been allowed to play in the front for a long time now.

Not just Malig-Nancy and Feinschwein, give a bunch of them Gavin Newsom’s lawn to camp out on!

The Other Whitey

I’m afraid to ask what shape those hotel rooms are in one they’ve been occupied by the average San Francisco hobo for a day or two, or how they treat the housekeeping staff.

I’m also slightly curious about the extravagant cost. I’ve slept in many hotels/motels on various campaign fires, and we get charged the “state rate” roughly $100 per room, and we’re doubled up in rooms, meaning it only costs the taxpayers 1% as much to bed down a firefighter in clean sheets as it does a bum. We don’t generally trash the rooms, but that still doesn’t account for the disparity. It’s a safe bet that certain individuals on the upper region of the proverbial totem pole are taking a cut, as usual.

Green Thumb

They are doing this where I live as well.

Buying a hotel and turning into a homeless shelter for drunks that cannot pass a sobriety test to get into the larger homeless shelter.

The Other Whitey

Okay, I pulled a Lars and failed at reading comprehension. I somehow took “per month” as per day. Even with that correction, they’re still paying three or four times the state rate per bum.

A Proud Infidel®™️

I’ve heard time and time again about how our tax dollars go towards Public Housing where apartments are routinely given to lower income and welfare-fed types to only get trashed in no time flat, walls torn out, occupants urinating and defecating on the floors,… Thus I’m sure that the flunkies getting free beds do the same there until the places are rendered unlivable and then local Government entities go do the same with yet another property, further proof that liberalism is a mental disorder!

NHSparky

I don’t remember how many places I’ve worked over the last 7-8 years that did this.

I do know that hotel space in a lot of these places is rare and expensive due to municipalities putting up homeless on the taxpayers dime.

Deckie

California… nooooooooo kidding.

You should see my shocked face.

Shithole.

This is a crazy idea but I wonder if those people who fornicate in public and lay on their ass all doing drugs are the same people committing those other crimes? I mean its doubtful but who knows?

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Why are these liberals complaining, after all they are supposed to love others and all the sex drugs and rock & roll are peaceful like looting riots arson that they all say are peaceful.

Ex-PH2`

Well, gee whiz, the article I posted a while back on a recession that will last into 2024 is underway. People are trying to make things work, but those who wait tables, run small shops, run restaurants, etc., are getting bumped out of making a living…. and this was forecast by people who are miles ahead of politicians in the finance and economics of something like this… and the politicians who are doing these things think that money is an endless stream of cash when people are out of work…

Perfect storm, if you ask me. It’s extremely likely, unless someone reins in their spendthrift behavior, that the Democrats will spend the USA into bankruptcy just to get votes. They seem to think that money just shows up out of nowhere. They forget, to their detriment, that there is only so much tax money coming in right now, and for the foreseeable future, and we have other needs to fill than paying money to drug addicts and thieves.

Hondo

It’s extremely likely, unless someone reins in their spendthrift behavior, that the Democrats will spend the USA into bankruptcy just to get votes.

You just now figuring that out, Ex-PH2? Hell, that started nearly a century ago (1936, Social Security Act). And it’s only accelerated since then.

5JC

Touquville specified that was how Democracy in America dies.

Back in 1835.

Commissar

This is a lot of nonsense.

Republican administrations run up much more debt on average that democrat administrations.

That is a historical fact.

Despite the propaganda of the right.

A Proud Infidel®™️

As usual, you’re more full of shit than twenty million geese!

Commissar

Yeah, this is a mess.

I am all for housing the homeless, but it can be done much less expensively.

However, part of the intent appears to be to keep the lower end hotels and motels in business through the pandemic.

When tourism drops, higher cost hotels can lower prices but reduce some amenities to maintain occupancy and keep afloat, for a time.

Lower cost hotels drop well below operating costs since they tend to operate with much tighter margins and when tourism drops they tend to fail.

And when they do their empty facilities attract squatters and start creating problems in the same neighborhoods that are complaining now.

Poetrooper

“I am all for housing the homeless, but it can be done much less expensively.”

You think?

They should hire Sheriff Joe Arpaio as a consultant…

Commissar

I don’t support human rights and civil rights violations.

Or openly violating the constitution. Or inexcusable exceeding the limits of their legal authority as law enforcement. Or defying court orders to stop.

Arpaio is an absolute worthless piece of shit. A genuine scumbag.

And the right wing hero worship of him says a monumental amount about how they claim to care about the constitution, rule of law, and separation of powers but really don’t give a single flying fuck about any of it.

SFC D

Since it’s going to cost these hotel owners a fortune to clean, repair, and refurnish their buildings, this attempt to “keep the lower end hotels and motels in business through the pandemic” is pretty much a death sentence for the business. Or is there going to be a taxpayer funded rescue for the owners. In essence, you’re saying “In order to save the village, we had to destroy it.”

SFC D

But it makes them feeeeeeel good about “doing something”.

Commissar

And another thing Ed left out in his political spin…

They are not just housing the homeless. They are feeding them with prepared meals.

And there is the utility costs of these facilities.

So an apartment for $5000k a months is a bit of a false similarity.

More like room, three meals a day, and utilities for a month in the most expensive city in America.

Makes the $5000 per person per month, slightly over cost, but not by as much as the spin being used by the right wing echo chamber.

Commissar

Sorry, not Ed.., it was Mason.

I should have known.

He is a propagandist. Everything he posts is from the prepared menu of daily right wing talking points and “news” stories. With all the spin cooked in.

Regurgitating propaganda is the laziest form of blogging.

SFC D

rgr769

The question is a professional what? I am certain he doesn’t have a post graduate degree and even an undergrad degree is questionable, since he only went to school at the U.C. Berzerkeley for about three years, according to what he posted on LinkedIn.

As for the Iranian terrorist tackle, I think the reality is he sat down with an Iranian for lunch and he “tackled” a falafel with him.

rgr769

Gollee, Sgt. Carter, we never saw this coming. Who coulda thunk congregating homeless mentally ill and/or drug addicted people in downtown hotels would result in more crime in their vicinity. One could never suspect such people would have a problem conforming their behavior to those silly criminal laws.
