201006-N-BB269-1003 WASHINGTON (Oct. 6, 2020) A digital illustration created for the 245th U.S. Navy Birthday. The graphic features a guided-missile destroyer representing USS John Paul Jones (DDG 53) waving a battle ensign breaking through a silhouette of USS Constitution formed by clouds. (U.S. Navy graphic by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Raymond D. Diaz III/Released) {OK, I borrowed that from AW1Ed’s media album.)

All hands, listen up! Mess is now open and it’s your personal favorite: Burgoo. Go for it, and don’t complain, because if you whine and moan about it, you won’t get your usual ration of grog (rum).  Thanks to our historical researcher J. Townsends for his digging into the past.

Your ration of grog for the day includes a good portion of rum. While I do not recall the Navy’s approval of alcohol consumption by sailors while ashore, there is apparently a necessity while on board a Navy ship to be drunk enough to climb the ladders to brace the sails while the ship runs before the wind, especially on a three-masted barquentine.

The burgoo for breakfast fiasco in no way relieves you of your duties and responsibilities of a decent meal on the Thursday are for Cooking Post. Trying to bribe us with a grog ration is not gonna work.

My brother John was a plank leaser on the USS Midway. That meaning he was in the first crew after her upgrading to an angled deck. He always spoke highly of the chow but said you only got rum if you fell overboard. Never heard him mention Burgoo!
