Missing Fort Hood soldier found…not good news

| August 26, 2020

Sgt. Elder Fernandes

CBS News just reported that the lawyer for the family of Sergeant Elder Fernandes says that his body has been found. Sgt Fernandes was found hanging and foul play is not suspected. He was about 30 miles away from Fort Hood.

I was really hoping this wouldn’t end in still more tragedy. Godspeed, Sergeant Fernandes. I hope he finds the peace he was looking for.

Shit. I was figuring it was never gonna end up GOOD but Im glad his finally can at least have a small amount of closure.

Roh-Dog

May He place His grace upon you, Dear Sergeant.
Rest Easy.

NHSparky

Prayers for the Sergeant and his family.

And to those who drove him to this, rot in hell.

^THIS^ Well said NHSparky! Not the result we wanted, but it was the result that we knew, deep down, that it would be.

God’s Peace bring Comfort to SGT Fernandes Family and Compatriots.

Jay

Nailed it in one. What is done in dark will come to light. It may take awhile, but they will figure out what drove the Sergeant to this, and I hope they make them pay to the fullest extent possible.

Peace to his family, friends, and loved ones.

Ex-PH2

Damn. That’s all I can say. Just damn.

Too sad……
A permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Hate_me

Assuming the SHARP rumors are true, I can’t imagine the shame or memory of whatever he experienced falls into the category of a “temporary problem…”

I have no particular insight into the case, and I don’t mean to suggest that victims should feel ashamed of what they’ve endured – either way, may he rest in peace.

In cases like this, the idea of any sort of “justice” is nothing more than a lie we tell ourselves. Suicide is ugly, and should never be encouraged. Catch those who wronged him, and charge them for their actions – not for his.

The post SHARP there got busted for running a prostitution ring. Some climate they’ve got.

Hate_me

It’s a big post. While the commander is ultimately responsible for all those under him, leaders cannot be expected to be omniscient.

If PVT Snuffy slugs his wife for stepping out with Jodie, should we file his SL under the Lautenberg Amendment for creating a climate that encourages domestic violence?

Was the post SHARP criminally negligent in how they carried out their duties? Fry ‘em in proportion to their failure – not because an SM they allegedly failed committed suicide (or shot up his classmates, or beat his wife, or raped someone in-turn, etc.) but because their failures hold the potential for such.

Rest in peace soldier.

Rest In Peace SGT Fernandes.

May those who drove him to that be found out and held accountable.

Green Thumb

Agreed.

Sad news.

Dammit.

Examples need to be made asap. This has to stop.

Hate_me

Concur with the sentiment, but making examples of those who wronged him will encourage future suicides – not deter them.

None of this is intended to blame SGT Fernandes for the circumstances he faced, and my heart truly does go out to him… however:

Profound pain is a common thing, and there are very few people in the world who don’t, on occasion, feel powerless before the forces arrayed against them. Suicide is ultimately a selfish act (outside of some extreme examples), and the only agent is the one who kills himself. Punish his abusers for their abuse, if indeed criminal – not for the final acts of the abused, no matter how tragic.

While I abhor bullies, it is simply wrong to hold them accountable for the actions of the bullied – we cannot place blame for suicide on any living person without weaponizing suicide. If someone feels powerless, they’ll reach for whatever weapon they can find.

11B-Mailclerk

Bullies are culpable for the negative outcomes they produce. Same as crooks.

If the terrorized victim dies of a stroke, the bully/crook is culpable.

Don’t want to own the outcome? Don’t bully.

Hate_me

My concern isn’t to spare the aggressor any punishment; acts with the reasonable potential to cause such emotional damage as might drive someone to suicide should be held against that potential harm – regardless of whether a suicide occurred or not.

My concern is that it will encourage future attempts; when you punish someone for such only when the victim commits suicide, you incentivize suicide as a means of making one’s tormentors suffer.

SFC_K

Requiescat in pace SGT. Trying to wrap my head around the no foul play suspected. He was found 30 miles from his car which was still on Ft. Hood. Raises some disturbing questions.

HMCS(FMF) ret

My thoughts exactly…

Hondo

SFC K: source for “30 miles from his car which was still on Fort Hood”, please? Haven’t seen that yet, and I don’t believe it’s in the article Mason linked above.

UpNorth

Read both articles on TAH, I can’t find any reference to being “30 miles from his car”, or that his car was still on Ft. Hood.
That was my first question, where is/was his car.

Hondo

Au contraire, Mason. UpNorth nailed it.

SGT Fernandez’s body was apparently found 30 miles from Hood. However, the linked article says nothing about the location of his car when he was found.

For all I know at this point, his car may have be parked at Hood when he was found. Or it may have been parked close to where he was found. Or somewhere else entirely. Or it may be missing. Dunno.

Without more info, I’m not going to jump to conclusions.

Like he shot himself and reloaded.

Duane

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family – I had two of my military friends commit suicide while I was still active, and the shockwaves for friends and family are horrible. I hope that the family is able to keep pressure on to resolve the issues that led to this horrible event and hold those accountable responsible for their parts.

Graybeard

Y’all have said it all.

I hate this.

God’s mercy and peace be with Sgt. Fernandes and his family.

SFC (R) Blizz

He was found along the rail line between Belton and Temple for those familiar with the Fort Hood area. One of the guys from my company found him.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/vindman-brother-files-whistleblower-complaint-185456631.html
and in other military news, both Vindman brothers are filing complaints that they were mistreated as whistleblowers.

Apparently they missed the memo all armiies put out “if you are going to stab your chief in the back, do not fail to kill him.”

Mustang Major

Glad to see that they will be tied up spending money on legal fees and otherwise be wasting their time instead of moving on with their lives. Both of them should have thought this through a little better, unless this was their plan all along.

Sapper3307

Just working on a new book deal?

SFC D

Whistleblowers? Nothing they did was any kind of whistleblowing. All they did was shoot themselves in the foot. Repeatedly.

OWB

May his family and friends soon find some peace with all this. And may the criminal investigation produce enough truths to facilitate their finding peace.

We all have questions. Too many questions. So many things apparently wrong and apparently not being attended to very quickly at Fort Hood. May those solutions soon be found.
