The truth about Discovery’s Dual Survival’s Joe Teti
A few weeks ago, we wrote about David Canterbury, a member of the cast of a survival show on the Discovery Channel, “Dual Survival”. At the time, someone brought up Joe Teti, the other fellow on that show. So being the cynics that we are, we got Teti’s records, too. Here’s what Teti claims on his website;
Most of that is true. He was indeed in the USMC’s Force Recon. He spent less than 4 years in the Marines and here’s his records of assignments;
And his schooling;
He was also in Special Forces – National Guard Special Forces- for five years, ending on May 1st, 2000.
So that’s where his military records end, so he could hardly be a “combat veteran of OIF and OEF” as he claims in his bio in the way that most of us understand the term “veteran”. However, he did participate in those wars as a contractor.
I spent about an hour or so, total in about four phone calls with Joe yesterday. He stands by the “veteran” tag in regards to the war against terror, although your opinions may be different. He tells me that he didn’t reenlist after 9-11 because he was already in the pipeline for a contractor job, which seems reasonable to me, and I have no evidence to the contrary.
I don’t disparage his service because he certainly accomplished more in his nine years than I did in my two decades, well, school-wise, anyway. There are rumors about him flying around the internet and I won’t engage in hearsay. Joe has sent me volumes of his records that I have promised that I wouldn’t post. Of course, all of it reflects well on him as a warrior.
I also understand that he became a target as soon as he took the job at the Discovery Channel, for whatever reasons, that’s the downside of being a public figure. I found him to be an affable fellow, even though he called me ‘sir’ more times than I was comfortable with. And he called me a “smart guy” several times – if only he knew.
So, I may be accused of being star-struck, but, without some real evidence to the contrary, I’m inclined to come down on Joe’s side. We thought that we had a real story here when we first started out, because the first set of records we got were of another Joseph Nicholas Teti who was a helicopter mechanic in the Army back in 1983, the same time Joe said he was in the USMC, but I got a little suspicious of that first set of records, which took us back for another shot at it, and sometimes, they are who they say.

Hey Ex-PH2. Did you see my birthday cake offer to you in the Bloomberg cake thread?
Oh, AirCav, no, I didn’t. I was on the trails most of the morning and then out mowing the lawn. I’ll go and look.
LOL Napoleon probably isnt coming back I take it. Looks like he got ran off here.
AirCav, go see my message on BLoomie’s cupcake thread.

Joe Teti is a fake. He did complete the Green Beret Qualification course while assigned to the National Guard’s 19 Special Forces Group. He was kicked out of 1st BN 19 SFG(A) for stealing night vision goggles and other expensive equipment. They didn’t have enough evidence though to prosecute. He then went to A CO 5/19 SFG(A) and was removed from operational status for lack of critical thinking skills and uncontrolled temper. I personally watched him pull a loaded pistol and draw down on his team sergeant in a fight during a Special Forces Urban Combat Course taught at Camp Williams, UT in the summer 2000. When he was teaching the same course in 2001, he was caught stealing training simunition pistols and ammunition. This was while he was in the National Guard. He owned a concrete pressure washing business in NV as his full time profession. In 2003, I ran into him in Baghdad where he was working for a private security firm doing protection details. I caught him lying again when he said he was working in Delta Force. His boss “Ike” was a former Sergeant Major in Delta and when word got back about what Joe was saying he was fired from that position too. He NEVER worked for any Tier 1 unit and did NOT serve on active duty in his army career. I have not… Read more »
Firewalker, your comments about Teti are right on. He is a liar, a cheat and a thief. He was known as a guy you couldn’t trust when I served with him in 19th Group.
I do not see where he attended SF training?

One year of college is preferred, but it is not a mandatory for enlistment.
Then there is the selection process before entering SF traing and if you are thumbed down you are out. His service record reflects none of the basic requirements for SF.
Years ago when I was in the military, you used to have to be an E-5 before you could be considered for Special Forces. Did they change that?
Is he still offering 10k to fight him?
He stood down when I challenged him to it. He didn’t like my stipulation of POWnetwork holding on to the money & then giving it to them as a donation.
I will fight him for 5k.
Quite the bargain!

I dunno, but after reading all these posts, me thinks that the issue is much “simpler” – I think the Discovery Channel was scrambling to find a replacement and happened across Teti because he was a stockbroker for one of the execs of the show. Call it conspiracy theory, sheer genius, or utter bullsh#t – I’ve been blamed for all three. But one thing I know, beyond the shadow of a doubt: I am NOT a combat veteran!
I LOVE that you are anonymous via the internet and still want to let it be known you aren’t a vet. I really do respect that man. Too many people claiming it or even upping what they did while in for personal praise. Again, I appreciate it. Doubt you’ll hear this since you posted almost a year ago, but someone will read this. Someone will also appreciate this.

Strictly, by definition, if he saw combat a few times during OIF or OEF and was attached to Tier 1 combat group(s), even as a contractor he could call himself a veteran of combat or in his words a ‘combat veteran’. I didn’t see any direct claim by him to be a US Military Combat Veteran or to posses a CIB. However, I do understand how his play on words upsets many that he did not do this while serving in a US Military uniform or those that assumed he saw combat while enlisted in the US Military.
The implication by his adamant secrecy is that he was a CIA Opertative. Let’s say that was true or is a fact….does that make it any easier to tolerate his claim of “combat veteran” as a paid government employee serving combat missions?
The proven facts are he was enlisted as a member of an Elite US Marine unit and Army SF. He completed the training required of him to stand at the ready. Whether or not he was deployed while in uniform into a combat situation or NOT is not his fault. He was ready while in uniform and presumably discharged honorably. Then hell, he even went to the fight after he got out. That is respectable. Most units suffer a loss after a deployment when the soldiers initial contracts are up.
My apparent tolerance for this situation is prejudiced by the opinion of a decorated Tier 1 guy that knew Joe since they went through SFAS together. He has not had a problem with him or anything he has said or published about himself.
You guys need to pay attention to Joe’s letter and read the whole thing, he and MH are having a feud, that’s what he threatening legal action about, and he WAS a member of an SMU, and he WAS in direct action missions in the employ of our government, he was still in combat and still a veteran. You guys are really splitting hairs and its unconscionable the things that are being said.
28 yrs service, 25 of which as 18 series and all my schools and assignment are in my records and DD-214, except what I could not prove! Words and deeds are important gentlemen, they are directly related to the one thing that cannot be taken from you in this life, “your honor” can only be given. I’m not an expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
I agree with this statement the most the claim “combat veteran” took his integrity which in turn you lost your honor and all fundamentals in my lower enlisted combat veteran eyes! He looks like a guy with blackwater we called pyro! It’s LDRSHIP!
Army guys know what that means
thanks for your service joe some people just dont get it,your the reason we can shut our eyes at night and dont have to worry about if there going to open in the morning
@216, Oh hell, another sock puppet that has done went and resurrected a dead thread. “Dis gonna be good”. So let me pop some popcorn and pull up a chair. With the way that these dead treads come back to life, you would think that it is ordained to be here at TAH.

Joe Teti is so awesome he can read this backwards…

I know this is a very old post but as a Government Training Specialist who has deployed for over three years in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have seen the “New Army” and how many of todays troops earn their CAB by being in the chow hall at the Garrison Base in/around/near Kabul during an IDF attack. You heard me correctly Garrison. I know many with a story never tell it and many who tell the best war stories never fired a shot in combat. To say any Civilians forward deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan can leave at their own discretion is False. Emergency Essential personnel are “mission critical” and cannot abandon their post until properly relieved, punishable by the fullest extent of the UCMJ. It’s common knowledge that the last Draftee retired in 2011 so at this point all military personnel volunteered for their service. (If you didn’t realize that you might actually go to WAR the recruiter had a field day with you.) Just like a Federal Employee volunteers for Civil Service. DFAS sends my check and I view my LES on “mypay”. I can post definitions of the words “combat” “veteran” “armed” and “forces” if you like. As someone above mentioned specific words have specific meanings when those words are strung together to form a very vivid statement. Some people add their own meanings or attempt to redefine those words/terms or believe those words/terms are sacred, you are WRONG. Allow me remind some of you PRIOR service members, YOU are just another Civilian now. The day you took that uniform off you ceased to be whatever RANK you attained. I will thank everyone for their service and point out that I’ve not meant to offend anyone. I also have a question to leave you with; Is the sacrifice to serve your country in the same environment on the same day/time/location any different from civilian to Soldier/Sailor/Airman/Marine?
I agree with a lot of what you wrote. Especially about what happens when you ETS or Retire from the military.
However, don’t begin to think that KAF, Bahgram, JBAD or Kabul are garrison. I personally saw a 107mm nail a chow hall on KAF in JAN 2011 (I was first through the door) resulting in a fatality and 11 serious injuries. As someone who has a CIB (and got to return fire…a lot) I don’t begrudge a person being awarded the CAB or PH because they just happened to be behind the wire when God decided they were going to have a bad day.
You’ll never find Mr.Tetis’ actual military record because the government protects our family. Yea you can file freedom of information papers but trust me, it’s not all there nor will it ever.

/right, it’s classified…you wouldn’t know anything about it….
ya right murry Utah is so top secret
Oh, he didn’t really do that, did he?
The only thing that’s buried about Joe Teti is his shit.
Up to his eyeballs.
Joe who?

More like “Two-hole Tapper” Teti.

Two-hole Teti, the known thief, back in the Top Posts.
Awesome.
Still a douchnozzle.
Is there a statute (Or just in case Denny is reading this, a “statue”) of limitations on douchebaggery? Between Angie and Joe “Tea bag” Teti, it’s like an episode of “The Walking Dead” up in here.
The Army Times called yesterday. They’re doing an article on Teti and wanted my opinion. They got it, but I don’t think they’ll use it.
ChipNASA: I am definitely stealing that URL. (smile)
As a rule, the Army Times doesn’t print quotes like, “Fucked up like a football bat.”
You really shouldn’t have switched back into Platoon Sergeant mode while talking to the Times reporter, Jonn. (smile)
What, not even some audio?
Now I’m all disappointed and stuff.
Army times were going to do an article on him. But the reporter Goggled Teti’s name first and saw all of the poser blogs.
He then intervened Teti about it and we are all demons.
To be clear, the reporter and I got along famously, but I don’t think I gave him anything that was salvageable in regards to my opinion of Teti.
Wow Jonn. If that’s the case. My opinion of the ass nugget is going to be even worse.
did an interview with the reporter from Army Times myself.
Straighten out all of the BS lie’s that Teti had told him also.
BTW Joseph Teti. Quit disrespecting my Beirut Brothers by claiming that you was part of the Peace Keeping Force.
also Military Phonies blogspot is not a fraudulent blog. We do our homework. And expose only those that have stolen Valor. That should explain why your name is on the blogspot tough guy.
I’m also waiting on to you make good on your $10,000 offer for me to come meet you in private for ten minutes. Or is that just a bully tactic which you are unwilling to back up ? It only proves what type of backbone you really do have COWARD !!
His is not a bully … he is just an outted embellisher who is seemingly disliked across the boards and lashes out like a high school cheerleader who has just had her bra snapped by a 9 year old boy!
So in review:
Not a bully …
Panties in a wad …
He runs the usual, “can’t talk about it, can’t mention” stuff. Jonn, Scott, and Mary get mentions as well. Here’s that article:

I will state for the record. Mykel Hawke is not part of. And never has been an admin on Military Phonies. He has never been affiliated with the blogspot. ~ Scotty
Where did these records come from?

Oh Joe, There certainly are a lot of jealous people out there. I wonder why—-if they don’t like you—–they follow your career.

So I am watching an episode of Dual Survivor the other day and I think I hear Joe say, “… and there is no CALVARY coming over the hill…” and I think, “Did he say CALVARY?”. So, I hit the rewind button (TIVO), and play it back…. several times. There is no doubt in my mind he says “CALVARY”.
Which is consistent with what he posted here:
https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?id=271325129646703&story_fbid=500964940016053
…and no calvary is coming to your rescue…
Maybe I am being nitpicky, but I find it hard to believe that an ARMY Veteran doesn’t know the difference between Calvary and Cavalry. Just thought I’d share my disbelief. Now back to hoarding my camel dung.
He likes to compare himself to Jesus.
I guess maybe I’m less critical or jaded – whatever. When I read the bio above during his first season on the show I never got the impression that he was selling himself as a “military combat veteran”.
After reading all of this – I though wow – I have used “veteran” or seen veteran used in language both written and spoken not associated with the military.
“Veteran firefighter”
“Veteran police officer”
“Veteran war correspondent”
we veterans of the military don’t own the term-“Combat Veteran” isn’t a term that is tied exclusively to the military..
You are correct in that the term “Veteran” is used in many forums and has multiple meanings.
Teti knows this. But yet he did not try to push points of clarification until he was called out.
And he is a thief from my understanding.
Don’t know the guy, don’t really care.
That being said, when I began my current gig as an instructor, the CEO used to introduce me as a “combat veteran” and “combat medic”. Neither of which are technically true as I “only” saw action as a contractor, and while I have medic certs up the ying yang, I was never a dedicated medic on any of my contracts. I corrected him, and it stopped.
So, it is not entirely out the question that his (or the show’s) civilian handlers displayed the same ignorance mentioned in my experience.
Maybe he wasn’t a warfighter… Maybe he never killed anyone… Maybe he never fired his rifle in combat.
But he has solid survival training. Isn’t that the point? He’s not fighting off afghan hoards or hunting people. He’s great at surviving the outdoors and that’s why I watch. The day he says anything about killing afghans or Iraqis or massive firefights, that’s the line. Until then, he’s a survivalist. And he’s good at it. Just watch the show. He could be a POG pretending he won the war. It’s too common these days.
Its Hollywood isn’t it? I watch the show now and again maybe I’ll learn something certainly been things I’ve seen that id do differently as far as all the opinions of who’s real and whos not how the hell do we know its entertainment….. I thought
They should have kept Cody. They cut, edited, and scripted with Joe to make Cody look bad. Joe is fat and reckless.
Let him be what he wants to be he knows what he did or didn’t do that’s all that matters
Updated the blogspot with a brief summary . Since the piss drinking idiot wants to claim Military Phonies is a fraudulent web-site . It’s time to put his money where he drinks urine from and produce his dd-214’s and ngb22 to prove his FOIA is wrong.

If they would just cancel this show, hopefully this turd will go away.
What is wrong with you people??? Teti is entertaining and obviously knows what he’s doing. There are enough fans of the show to keep it on the air and if you don’t like him, then DON’T WATCH THE SHOW!!!!! No one is forcing to endure the torture of stomaching through the episodes as you blog about how fake he is, how he’s a thief and a liar, how he falsified his military records and experience, etc. The easy cure to end your suffering is to NOT WATCH THE SHOW and leave it to the rest of us that admire and enjoy him!
No one said he falsified his records. You didn’t even read the post, did you? And I’ve never watched the show.
Kat,
Just propose to him and get it over and done with.
Oh, and read what was wriiten before you run your yap!
The End.
I don’t think that Kat1124 is able to do that MCPO.
I believe that her mouth is full.
😉
Perhaps you should have read the entire post…there were several comments that said he LIED about serving in OIF and OEF…that’s considered “falsifying” one’s records…
This is not about quality TV shows. It is about stealing valor from those who truly earned it.
If you don’t understand how that is wrong, perhaps you should go somewhere else. Clearly you are more interested in reality TV than reality.
He’s on a reality TV show! …and I have military family members that have made the ULTIMATE sacrifice so don’t try to school me. He served and I appreciate it and no one has the right to take that away from him.
The End
“He’s on a reality TV show!”
No shit. I said you are more interested in reality TV than reality. The reality is that he has misrepresented his service multiple times for personal gain – jobs as a security contractor, a gig on Dual Survival, etc. You really don’t see anything wrong with that.
As for your family members that have made the ultimate sacrifice, you have my sympathy and they have my ultimate respect.
And yeah, I have family members and brothers in arms that have made the ultimate sacrifice too. I’ve shed my own blood on foreign soil in defense of this country and am fortunately still kicking, if a little worse for the wear.
Well, it’s obvious someone needs to school you, since you really can’t distinguish between what Jonn wrote and what is said in the comments.
Also, no one is questioning his service, just his saying he’s a combat Vet versus a contractor that engaged in combat. There is a difference. Just like the fact I used to jump out of perfectly good aircraft on the civilian side, while I was in the Army, didn’t make me airborne qualified or get me jump pay from the Army.
Child, “reality television” is a oxymoron. There’s nothing “real” about it. Now if you want to slobber on Teti’s nob, go for it. But don’t try telling us that he’s the “real deal” when it’s obvious that he isn’t. He may have been a contractor, but I have yet to see evidence that he was ever in Iraq or Afghanistan or that he ever heard a shot fired in anger.
Hmm, I guess you missed- or deliberately overlooked- that Joe’s military service ended in 2000. Kind of hard for him to have served in OIF/OEF
Kat1124,
Actually, it is more accurate to describe his actions as ‘lying or falsifying one’s resume.”
The records – the official military records – show that Teti did not serve at the time he claimed to served. His embellishment of his resume on some level serves to harm those who did serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
His embellishment has nothing to do with him being a “nice guy,” It has nothing to do with his knowledge, him being entertaining, or him being on a reality TV show. It has nothing to do with being able to press a button and turn to another channel and not watch him.
His embellishment goes, in some way, to his integrity.
Granted, his embellishment is somewhat small and controversial given his being employed in during OIF and OEF, but whether a small white lie or a big honkin’ lie, a lie is still a lie.
I have family that served and died in the military. I work with the military on a daily basis. One thing that is constantly beat into their heads and in which they take great pride is integrity. Misrepresenting serving when you did not is a mark against that integrity.
I don’t believe there is any other way to classify it.
The bottom line is this: you seem willing to accept the embellishment / lie / misrepresentations Teti made. Others here are not. I would rather stand with those who demand integrity in themselves and others rather than one that looks the other way for the sake of entertainment.
But that is just me.
Your mileage may vary.
Don’t take it so personal! Not intended to get you riled up – if you didn’t like what I wrote, don’t read it ;). It’s ok, I’ll make it without you!
You guys are so angry if anyone defends Teti… Ya’ll just need to accept that there are people that like the show and like watching Teti…it’s nothing personal against any haters, so you can continue to run your yap just as I will.
That’s probably because the only defense people offer is that “I like his show!”
His show has nothing to do with it – execpt that he got the gig largely because he embellished his military experience. But don’t let that interfere with your pop-culture worship.
* Sigh * Another star gazer with their head stuck so far up Teti’s ass that they can’t grasp the true concept of what the idiot is doing.
Kat1124: most of us couldn’t give the proverbial hoot in hell if people like watching Teti on TV or not.
Misrepresentation of one’s military experiences? Different story.
IMO, Teti stepped over that line. YMMV.
I watched the show last night with the new guy Matt on it for the first time. Matt had a weapon so thankfully I did not have to listen to Joe blather on about “force protection”. At the end, Matt sticks a 35 lb peccary and it’s in a pool of water drowning/bleeding to death. Joe encroaches on the dying animal. Matt asks him to back off… Joe spears it (like a douche) and then justifies it by saying with his background, a wounded animal is a threat and he’s not going to turn his back on it or some shit. So yeah, Mr. ForceRecon SF Green Beret Combat Veteran Joe Teti feels threatened by a dying/drowning 35lb piggy. Okay, maybe it weighed 40 lbs.
Joe Teti COMPROMISED the mission when jumping back down into the damn cave while in Mexico over a pair of lenses! Matt Clearly has the skills needed to survive and said he could start a fire. Joe needs to trust in Matts Skills as much as he was to trust in Cody’s!
Regardless of his Military experience, I would have much rather seen Cody and Matt surviving.
And already calling his survival mate an idiot for putting the lens’s in the bag…did he ever think he may have put the hole in the bag? Jumping back in that hole was expending energy, something he’s adamant about..I call a hypocrite when I see it. He cries worse than a 5 year old girl that has been told she’s ugly.
Maybe it was those night vision goggles that he stole that fell back into the pit….
Anyway, he is a drama queen and a turd.
As far as the “mercy” component that Teti displays: If I can across him after the Abominable Snowman damn near fucked him to death on the North 40, I would fart, take his smokes and move on.
agreed. Joe is a dick
Dude should have kicked him in the face and sent his sorry ass back into the pit.
He is a soldier which is very different from a survivalist. Its easy to survive with lots of equipment. Its very different without the support of the army. I don’t rate him on this show and find him shouty and annoying
Right on Papa. Joe, by lack of a better definition, is a soldier not a survivalist. Soldiers for the most part are trained killers. Another reason he so viciously kills his food with no respect. That’s what they do. They are not trained for survival. They are packaged: tent, fire starter, canteens, and all of the equipment necessary to “survive” for the short term. No skill for making it off the land with respect for what it can provide with some thought.
with all do respect ever island girl on the planet kills their food the same way. Joe stabbing a baby pig tied to a tree isn’t a display of rank, soldiering or even manhood. His display on the show was less spectacular than seeing a six year old island girl running down a 350 pound wild boar with an old iron spear and field dressing it with a bone knife and a rock. I have no respect for these types of shows because of their use of “military” type brutes. Lets face it, if a soldier is in a position of survival he is a failure for he has failed his mission compromising everyone. No “survival” show should suggest any type of military need. Hikers, extreme athletes, families on a weekend outing these are the ppl in need of such info. The problem is, they don’t make purchases based on male hormones. They wont buy a knife, compass, water bottle, just because they are emotionally attached to the person whose name is on it. I always crack up at these so-called straight macho alpha males who think they become more of a man because they have so-and-so’s knife, or wear his jersey. This emotional bro-love cracks me up. Why can’t ppl just be honest. Joe was a soldier who chose to work as a private investigator than serve because it pays more, he doesn’t get his hands dirty and then uses that to get a tv show where everything is pre-arranged. He is an actor. Has been all his life. It doesn’t take much to act cool. It does however to be noble. No shame in doing what he is doing. He has to pay bills just like anyone else, but to act as if it takes some type of gallantry to kill a baby pig, that is shameful. Don’t forget these island boars are not the wild boars many mainlanders are familiar with. They don’t leave paths of destruction behind them. Unless you count scrub brush field mice as opponents.
Maybe they could team him up with Jake Dilberto.
