Secession; the issue of the day
Nik sends us a link to a petitioning group of Texans who are peacefully requesting that Texas secede from the United States.
The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government’s neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it’s citizens’ standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.
It had 79,000 signatories when I looked at it. I understand the frustration brought on by the last election, really, I do. But this isn’t helpful. I mean I know that whoever signed it doesn’t really expect that Texas will secede, or maybe they do. But it certainly doesn’t help our side look sane. Besides, it has caused a bunch of leftists to start a petition asking the White House to strip anyone who signed any of the petitions of their citizenship according to The Weekly Standard;
Mr. President, please sign an executive order such that each American citizen who signed a petition from any state to secede from the USA shall have their citizenship stripped and be peacefully deported.
Thankfully that makes their side look sillier than our side, since most of them would have happily surrendered their own citizenship at any point in the Bush era. If only they had the means to move the hell out. So suddenly, because their side won the election, citizenship has value.
The Weekly Standard says that they’re about 18,000 signatures short of being considered by the White House. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, though. I don’t see this White House doing anything that looks like action on much of anything. Thanks to H1 for the link to the story of the Leftists’ petition.

My concern is that the secession movement is just the first step. I don’t think it will happen, and logistically, there’s no realistic way to just up and claim a new citizenship overnight. If you think about it, just the citizenship and passport process, military affiliations, and laws would take years to change over; long after the current administration changes. My concern is that it leads to groups taking the next step which could very well be a civil war. If that’s the case, and if America is divided like that and dealing with the internal strife, we’ll be ripe for the picking by other nations. I think it could easily lead to a global war that would get pretty nasty pretty quick and last for a while. Personally, I think it would be the end of America the country, and many many years before America the ideal could reestablish itself and prosper again.
I think all this talk of secession is a waste of time, energy, and effort. I think our energy is better spent with things that are likely to succeed. Dont get me wrong, I dont like the way the election panned out but this all sounds to me like the little boy on the playground who wants to take his ball and go home all because the other kids dont want to play by his rules. I seem to remember learning about the last time states seceded from the Union and the disastrous results of that whole deal. I for one, having seen war, do not want to see war in my backyard. Now, if folks want to leave the US and go someplace like Canada, dont let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. BUT, dont come crawling back when those of us with the intestinal fortitude to stick around through the tough times have fixed the issues. I will not welcome them back like the prodigal son.
@53: That’s sounds all well and good, however, there are a few problems with your analysis.
First off; the kid on the playground wants to take his ball and go home while he still has both.
Second; no one is going to Canada and why should they? You are under the false idea that we will have something to turn around and fix in another 4 years. Do you let the parasites kill the host, or do you eradicate the parasites, or the reason the parasites have infested the host?
What it comes down to is this; the debt and deficit will only get worse and there is no reasonable possibility that it will get any better in the next 4 years and then, it might be too late to “fix the issues”. I can’t disparage anyone who wants to keep a little of what they have left and if they think their only laternative left is secession; then why are you acting like this? Think about it; what happened in this recent election with all that is known about the record of this commie we have in the WH right now? How on earth could anyone think that he can do better with another 4 years when his plan is more of the same? Plus, it seems that the parasites have indeed taken over the host with the gimme gimme attitude (entitlement spending is far more than defense spending, and increasing, yet everyone points the finger at defense for cuts).
Go ahead and “fix the issues” before the usual talk about “everyone that doesn’t want to play by my rules can go screw themselves”, because you are saying the same thing to them as you are complaining that they’re saying, it’s just you’re on the opposite side.
It isn’t all 50 states yet? I’m SOOOOO disappointed.
