This election was lost (or won, depending on your views) a while back. It does come down to demographics but not the demographics of race. It is, rather, the demographics of dependency, taxation and ignorance. At the bottom, the lifetime dependent will vote for whoever promises the most. 30 some years ago in Scotland I was dealing with people who were in the second generation of dependency. Their parents had never worked, they had never worked and the chances are their 3 or 4 kids from that time have never worked either. Housing, food,clothing and medical all taken care of by the State. The more children the had, the more benefits they received. The drop in income and lifestyle if they actually took a job would be considerable.
The ignorance is mostly with those who, while not on direct government assistance themselves, will vote for the guy with the freebies because 1.The think their not paying for it, 2. They get to feel good about themselves without personal cost and 3. That little hidden satisfaction of sticking it to the rich.
There is of course great cost. Unsustainable cost. I was back in the UK a month ago. Gas was about $10 a gallon. The difference between UK and USA prices is not production costs or oil company profits but government taxation. VAT, basically at the consumer level, a national sales tax is 20%. And even with high income tax, there is still not enough money. This is where this country is heading and as we have seen in Greece, Spain, Portugal and Italy, it is a dangerous and violent proposition to attempt cutting benefits. To be honest, I’m not sure the political system in this country is capable of producing the politicians capable of leading the nation back.

Of course they believe in Socialism, it’s almost a requirement now to teach that over real Democracy in the school systems. I’m pretty sure many college instructors were giving extra credit to those that voted for Barry.
I was wondering…could be go back to British rule? I think I’d rather have a Queen than a dictator..

So Iran is ran by Cobra Commander. I’d still take a Prime Minister that is not afraid to attack and take the defensive than a Present in Chief who bows to our enemies.

Considering that we’re pretty close to that exact point as they were in Atlas Shrugged, Pinto–might well be worth the read, even at 1300 pages. I picked it up again recently having not read it since college.
The parallels are scary.

Have you seen the movie? If so, how does it compare to the book?
Stick to the book. Rand is pretty long winded and she does tend to be a bit of a pollyanna when it comes to pure capitalism, but the major concepts are dealt with in far better and more vivid detail than could ever be explained on film.

The film glossed over what Rand delivered in her prose. Take the time to read the book.

My favorite quote about Atlas Shrugged has always been:
“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”
Regardless of one’s politics, it’s pretty damn funny.
Well, I’ll take a look at the movie I suppose. Not so much for me, but to expose others to some ideas they don’t get taught in school.
