Weekend Open Thread
Still in recovery mode from a rather long trip, so today’s WOT article will be short.
Who says that the Federal Government has no sense of humor? Some parts of it do. Check this out:
For those who didn’t know: the phrase “can neither confirm nor deny” originated at the CIA when journalists began asking questions about Project Azorian in the mid-1970s.
And yeah: the above really was the CIA’s first tweet. At least, it was their first acknowledged and official one. (smile)
Have a great weekend, everyone – and enjoy the WOT.

PS: Readers want to note the month/day of that particular tweet, too. It’s somewhat significant, historically speaking.

What do we call them now if we meet them….”tweetie”? lol
I coulda been a contender. Congratulations to 5th/77th as he assumes the awesome responsibility of being First on the TAH Open Thread. Wear it well, Sir.
Much Thanks Chief, the competition is fierce. Never in my wildest dreams. The crown is perched at a jaunty angle and the Crown will be poured over a single ice cube. Blessing to all that follow!
Shots of the Crown and congrats on the 1sties.
Third. Snow is finally melting.
Glad y’all warming up Mi’Lady. Low 60s here, bright sun with nasty rain coming in tomorrow. Possible tornado warnings.
We had the 50+ day wedn. and I wore my 1950’S/60’S era N-1 deck jacket just for the one day. Wore a tee shirt today since the cold front went away.
YeeeeeeeHaaaaaaa and HOT DAMN! Now in the Coveted Book of Firsts!!!! Let it be written, let it be said, Let him Lord it over all of my fellow dickweeds and weedeses! A harbinger of firsts to come, “HOW ‘BOUT THEM DAWGS” ROLL OVER THE TIDE!! GO ARMY WILL BEAT NAVY!
5th/77th FA:
(1) Congrats to the King of Battle for being this week’s FIRST! 👍
(2) Despite being a Dawgs Fan (EXCEPT for this weekend), ate at the Varsity several times when stationed at McPherson…good food and good times…
(3) RTR! 🐘🐕…Gonna be a good game…😊
(4) Remember…The South Shall Rise Again..😉
(5) goarmybeatnavy 😎
Another Pat:
(1) Thanks Brother, couldn’t done it with out the inspiration from my fellow dickweeds.
(2) Eating at the Varsity would be the only good thing about Atlanta GA now a days.
(3) That no count oldest son of Mamas (big time ROLL TIDE ROLL Fan) had two (2) prime seat tickets with player/field access and sold them for $900.00 USD. He is officially disowned by the whole family now, can’t call him a real brother no more.
(4) Just cause Gnrl Lee had to surrender, don’t mean the rest of us did. I never surrendered, but they made my mule surrender. I suspect he’s pulling a wagon up Kansas way now.
(5) goarmyWILLbeatnavy
(6) Will raise a prost and chuggalugg for each score from both teams. Plan to be totally faced by half time. HOW ‘BOUT THEM DAWGS & ROLL TIDE ROLL
Another Pat, Re The Varsity: We went to Atlanta about 20 years ago to see Alison Krauss at the Fox Theatre. We stayed at a very nice hotel that actually overlooked The Varsity Restaurant. Can’t recall name of hotel. We watched as an endless parade of cars drove in and as pedestrians walked up to The Varsity. Didn’t understand until years later via computer search the significance of The Varsity. Won’t do a repeat … can’t see myself ever driving in Downtown Atlanta traffic. One problem is every street is Peachtree this and Peachtree that. On a later trip we saw the stage show Tuesdays With Morrie and stayed at the same hotel.
Junior’s was arguably better, when it was on North Avenue directly across the street from my freshman year dorm (Smith Hall.)
$22 coupon book for $20. Bought $100 every month.
“Dress two cheese, side!” Anyone who has been there knows what that means.
Fourth, so I guess that’s something. What it is, I’m not exactly sure. So here’s this week’s column, for you to enjoy (or not, as you choose). DID YOU KNOW…? Was there really a “one-day” President of the United States? By Commissioner Wretched Wow, it seems like fall has just gotten started, and we’re already less than a month away from the official arrival of winter! (I know, I could’ve gone all day and not said that.) Yes, the shortest day of the year – the first day of winter – will be here in just under three weeks. Do you plan to recognize the day in any way? I do. My recognition plan for the first day of winter, which is December 21st, will be to rise at my usual time (since it’s a Friday), go in to work as usual, do the things that I do, and then go home and watch the sun set earlier that it does any other day in the year. I know what you’re thinking … that’s a pretty dull way to celebrate the first day of winter. And you’re right, but then again, I’m basically a pretty dull person. What is never dull, of course, is trivia … and this week I have a fresh new supply to share with you. Should the muse be upon you, drop me an e-mail at didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com and I will be pleased to know how you plan to recognize the start of winter. (If you’re reading this south of the Equator, of course, it’s the start of summer, but that’s another topic entirely.) On to the “cold” facts about trivia! Did you know … … one of the loudest sounds made by nature took place in 1883? The volcanic island of Krakatoa, in Indonesia, exploded in a very violent eruption on August 26 of that year. It was a long eruption, too, lasting until well into the next day, and destroyed more than 70% of the island. The sound of the explosion was so loud that it woke people sleeping in the state of South Australia,… Read more »
“… the Internal Revenue Service has a plan for just about everything? In fact, the employee manual of the IRS includes a chapter dedicated to collecting income taxes after a nuclear war. (That’s if our side wins, of course.)”
Death and taxes, even nuclear war won’t stop them!
NASA had a plan for Viking raiders. As I recall, this was (back in the 90’s) available on NASA’s webpage publicly. Only version I can find immediately is this:
http://paulgazis.com/Humor/Vikings.htm
In emergency management training we were told that you need to have a plan for any possible contingency. Obviously someone at NASA was paying attention that day.
820AD-1066AD 🙂
Excellent post, again, CW. Took me awhile to get to it. It’s a long way back down to Earth from the Cloud Nine of 1st on WOT. My plans for the shortest day of the year, my luck holding, is to be with the Daughter (her Birthday is the 20th) and the Grand Babies, spoiling all of them and preparing for Christmas. On the subject of Nettflix, a small parallel in Atlanta way back when. Seems a young man at North Ave Trade School (GA Tech) was told by a professor that he would never amount to anything, doomed to failure, starve in the streets. He, the student, went across North Ave and opened up a small hot dog stand. Now the Varsity is world renowned for Hot Dogs chili cheese fries, and Frosted Orange drinks, whada ya have whada have? Better know what you want when you que up. Only winning thing to ever come out of North Ave Trade School. Go Dawgs!
“Was there really a “one-day” President of the United States?”

Little bit of Navy history. Additional Navy history will soon be made when Navy beats Army.
30 November 1942 – The Battle of Tassafaronga off Guadalcanal.
In the battle, a US warship force of five cruisers and four destroyers under the command of Rear Admiral Carleton H. Wright attempted to surprise and destroy a Japanese warship force of eight destroyers under the command of Rear Admiral Raizo Tanaka. Tanaka’s warships were attempting to deliver food supplies to Japanese forces on Guadalcanal.
Using radar, the US warships gained surprise, opened fire, and sank one of the Japanese destroyers. Tanaka and the rest of his ships, however, reacted quickly and launched numerous Type 93 “Long Lance” torpedoes at the US warships. The Japanese torpedoes hit and sank one US cruiser USS Northampton CA-26 and heavily damaged three others, enabling the rest of Tanaka’s force to escape without significant additional damage but also without completing the intended supply delivery mission. Although a severe tactical defeat for the US, the battle had little strategic impact as the Japanese were unable to take advantage of the victory to further resupply or otherwise assist in their ultimately unsuccessful efforts to recapture Guadalcanal from Allied forces.
Good stuff Chief, do enjoy these add ons you do for us. Had a 1st edition hard copy book on Naval Surface Actions that this battle was extensively written about. Like a dumbazz I had loaned it out and never got it back. Don’t make that mistake anymore. Seems as if a lot of the ship to ship action without Carriers being involved has turned into a footnote of history. Your work is helping to keep it in our minds. Again, Thanks!
Raizo Tanaka, one of the most tenacious and tactically proficient Japanese naval commanders of the war, was relieved of command and officially disgraced by the IJN in Feb 1943 in the aftermath of the Guadalcanal defeat because he became too outspoken in his criticisms of Japanese strategy and tactics that resulted in the waste of so many men and ships in the Japanese Guadalcanal debacle. Tanaka spent the remainder of the war in Japan on the retired reserve list, fortunately for us on the Allied side…
Fifth! Personal best.
Have a great weekend y’all!

I’ve driven it from Elmendorf AFB to Talkeetna….Prayers out that there are no fatalities.
https://www.foxnews.com/us/large-alaska-earthquake-jolts-residents-shakes-buildings
That picture of the road reminds me of the ones from the ’64 quake. Scary stuff. TINS, in Anchroage’s Earthquake Park you can still see just how much the earth moved some 50 years later.
I remember that one – though I was in Texas at the time.
Very scary.
That Fox commentator is dumber than a bag of hammers. I used to live in Eagle River, and then later owned a house in Anchorage. Glad I don’t anymore!
Hope the aftershocks aren’t bad.
I fortunately missed the 8.2 in Guam in 1993. Amazingly, only one person was killed as a result of that quake.
I’m never gonna be first at anything.
But somewhere in the middle ain’t bad.
Since most who lurk here are veterans, Ol’ Poe wants to conduct a poll as to how you like that commercial by VA lender, NewDay USA, where all the veterans are saying, “Thank you, Admiral,” to retired two-star, Thomas Lynch as he looks on benevolently. As I understand, Lynch, a former Annapolis classmate, and football captain of the team Roger Staubach quarterbacked, is a stand up guy. But something about that smarmy commercial just puts a bug up my ass.
Am I just being too critical?
Now, the NewDay commercials featuring that hot, young, former Marine officer, Tatiana Zapparino, are a whole different story…
I am probably biased but I will go with a Tatiana just about anywhere.
One of the things they do is reverse mortgages. Not a big fan of them as a general rule, but there are specific people who do and probably should use them.
Your just a sucker for a Roosian name…
I’d make her bark like a fox – IYKWIM!
I’m quite tired of his junk mail honestly.
I want to punch the bitch.
This commercial was on just minutes before I read your post and I hardly payed attention, now, the one that galls my nads is the insurance commercial where the idiot throws his wallet into the drink while standing in front of the Statue of Liberty. Totally unbelievable and way to whiney.
Yeah, I hate the Liberty Mutual commercials, that one in particular (how stupid can you be when you throw your wallet into the water just to make a point?). Very annoying though there are worse ones. I did like the Allstate commercials with the Mayhem character.
The USAA commercials torque me off. When I first enlisted they wouldn’t cover enlisted folks regardless of how many retired E-9’s they hired. Now they make a point of how they call all GI’s by their rank.
Poetrooper, it appears that Admiral Lynch is Co-Chairman of the NewDay USA Foundation.

I was down in Mississippi for Thanksgiving with the in-laws. In one of the many souvenir shops I found a 4th Award Combat Medical Badge. Still looing for a 4th award CIB, tough…
How about an 8th award of the CIB. Just came across this the other day and had never heard of it. I had seen a few years back a proposal for a gold CIB for those who had a CIB and an EIB. Apparently this was a very short lived change, and obviously we’ll never get to that point since the Army likes to think of two or three decades of disparate operations as part of the same war.

Just had a interesting experience and don’t quite know what to do with it. Not really a biggy, but a small exchange with a young punk that was at least weird, if not significant.
Leaving a store, had no choice but to pass a young couple leaning on a car parked directly in front of the door. Had noticed them before walking through the door but really didn’t want to stay in the store rather than risk interacting with them.
They are smoking. He’s wearing a flat billed ball caps on sideways. She has a bandana tied on her head. They both look clean and healthy. She doesn’t make eye contact, but he does, gives a little nod, semi-smiles and says, “‘s’up” as I pass them. No threatening gestures, movements or anything, but they look like typical late teen punks. Or caricatures of punks. I give him a return little nod and keep on walking.
That may just have been what passes today for expressing respect for the elderly. Or it may have been acknowledgement that I still project some sorta attitude. I dunno. It was odd enough that I wondered what had just happened as I crawled into my car. And locked the doors.
I know the feeling. It should feel like respect but you know it isn’t.
He may be accustomed to “I don’t see you people” and was responding to you as one -not- doing so.
Small courtesies matter.
OWB, according to the Urban Dictionary, “s’up) isn’t an inquiry but an informal way of saying hello, although it can at times be answered with an actual response.
Responses:
1. “My blood pressure”
2. “My ideal weight if I were 11 feet tall”
3. “The sky”
4. “I’m sorry, that’s confidential information”
5. “Gas prices”
6. “The opposite of down, didn’t you watch Sesame Street?”
7. I’m socially programed to say “not much””

Sad part is the clerk supervisor turned them down too. I would say WTF, but then again, it’s City of Washington D.C. Civil Service. Need we say more?

Well it is D.C, an area not well known for being filled with intelligent people.
True dat!
During the Atlanta Olympics, people who called in from New Mexico were told they had top call the international number. We were quite amused.
Which is why the NM plates all say “New Mexico USA” – some people – LEOs in particular – really do not have a clue.
Like one young lady I know who had a Guam drivers’ license who was held overnight in a Louisiana jail because the LEOs could not find an extradition treaty with Guam in case she fled the state to escape a moving violation ticket.
Idiots are everywhere – and most of them seem to vote.
IIRC, back during the Arab Oil Embargo, Hawaii was still buying oil from OPEC, as the Arabs had a geographical screw up.

Surprise, surprise, SGT Carter, he is still rockin’ the lies. His latest version is that he had a break in service and his 1960’s service before the break is not reflected in the FOIA response. Interestingly, Smith says he can’t remember his service number, but he will look it up. Lotsa luck with that Sonny, since you never had one, only a SSN. But those of us that actually served in the 1960’s all had one, and we can remember what it was. Mine was OF11***0.

They’d already switched to SSAN when I enlisted. Lot’s of the prior service # troops didn’t like that at all. Even had some admin types that said it would cause problems down the road. Odd how a number that was never supposed to be used as an ID number is now the defacto ID number for everything. Some states were even using it for DL #s, GA included. You had to make application to use another number besides SSAN on your DL, but the SSAN is still embedded in the records. And they wonder why so much ID theft is ongoing.
Oh,and BTW, Michael “Sonny” Smith is still a lying, embellishing POS that should just ESAD. His extending nose may case taint bruising on the hobos behind the truck stop out by the dumpsters. It may, tho, help him out at his day job at Brucie’s Bath House (entrance in the rear)

Thank goodness DoD eliminated the practice of having SSNs on Military ID cards.
rtr…🐘😉
It’s a good thing in general, but it does have its down side.
If you ever need to verify your SSN quickly – well, good luck. Passports don’t have them, and the Social Security Card itself has no photo and (at least at one time) plainly said that it was not to be used for identification purposes. A military ID was one of the few documents that actually allowed a person’s SSN to be verified when necessary.
They used to put them on award citations. Suitable for framing so everyone can see it.
I have one.
Navy was 772 XX XX. In boot camp, we used the Blue Jacket manual as a base for our clothes that we had to stencil our service numbers on. No SSN at that time.
AF1……4 and no I didn’t have to look it up or find old dog tags or have it tattooed on body.
Anyone from that era that cannot immediately recite it with vigor is either lying or suffers some other ailment.

From The Daily Snark, 30NOV2018. Posting this b/c it seems all too common (ONCE is TOO OFTEN) of what we expect from the NFL … National Felon League. If you can find this (Youtube) it’s worth a look. Well, bye now This allegedly happened in FEB2018 and was only recently released. Wonder why the delay? The Chiefs did the right thing and canned his ass within hours of seeing the video.
Chiefs Cut Star RB Kareem Hunt After Release Of Video Showing Him Assaulting Woman
By Randy Oliver – November 30, 2018
Kareem Hunt has been released by the Chiefs.
The star running back fell under scrutiny after a video showing him assaulting a 19-year-old woman stemming from an incident from February of this year was released by police.
Hunt was sent home from practice Friday, and soon after placed on the commissioner’s exempt list, suspending him indefinitely only to be released by Kansas City within the same hour.
The 23-year-old was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the third round of the 2017 Draft and since emerged into one of the best players in the NFL.
27 games into his career and Hunt has posted 2151 yards on 453 carries with 15 touchdowns. He finished as the league’s leading rusher last season as a rookie.
What is really pathetic is that his buddies tried to say it was justified because the woman supposedly called him a N$$$$R.
What’s this country coming to when people think that being called a name justifies assault.
By the way the woman said the confrontation was because she refused to fuck one of his friends.
Yeah, whip out that race card. That gets him off the hook. Hope he goes back to the hood where that behavior, unfortunately, may be more ‘acceptable’. I don’t care if she did call him a derogatory name, that is not justification for what he did. Just pond scum.
Anybody want to make odds on some other team picking him up, sending him thru an “anger management”, or “sensitivity training” sessions, declaring him “cured and rehabilitated”, then having him playing again by next year. I mean, after all, he is a good boy, can turn his life around, and sings in the choir during the off season. On the other hand, when are these dumb ass bimbos gonna learn, you can’t run with these thugs. Sleep with dogs, you get fleas.
The best part for me is that the NFL claims to have “investigated” and say that Hunt was lying, which the video now shows. So their investigation is just to talk to the player? You think he’s going to tell the truth? LOL
No way the NFL didn’t have this video. Their investigations are apparently all about covering their players’ asses.
Actually, it’s entirely possible the NFL did investigate – but was hamstrung because the hotel and PD involved simply told them to p!ss off.
The NFL cannot compel anyone who doesn’t work for/in the NFL to do squat. All they can do is ask. And if I understand correctly, the NFL bylaws and various labor agreements also come into play during an investigation involving an NFL player/team employee/official.
It’s not like the legal system, where testimony/documentation can be subpoenaed and legal sanctions exist for refusing to cooperate. If someone outside of the NFL tells the NFL, “No dice – I’m not telling/giving you squat”, well that’s too bad; the NFL has to live with that. Reportedly the non-NFL personnel involved in this incident all did exactly that when contacted by the NFL in conjunction with the NFL’s original investigation.
In such a case, all the NFL (or an NFL team) can do is threaten to withhold future direct NFL business. My guess is that a hotel will very likely decide that guest privacy trumps a potential future stay by a few people who may well never show in the first place.
The hotel involved apparently has a policy of not providing surveillance footage to anyone except LE. And since no charges resulted the Cleveland police apparently also declined to provide their internal investigation results to the NFL as well. So it’s entirely possible that the NFL didn’t see the video in question before it was released publicly recently.
What the KC Chiefs did here was to release a star player because they had evidence he’d lied to them (the video in question clearly showed that he’d lied to both them and NFL investigators when both had previously questioned him about the incident). If that becomes the norm (e.g., lie during an investigation and get released, thus losing a ton of $$$ while you’re not playing), that may give the NFL a bit more leverage to clean up its act.
On this date in history, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refuses to surrender her seat on a city bus to a white man and is arrested for violating racial segregation laws. This incident prompts the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
And Al, Jesse, et all have ridden her coat tails to infamy and fortune. Rosa Parks was a courageous woman. The rest of them, not so much IMHO. YMMV
Another one bites the dust … BOOM. I don’t recall so many officers and senior enlisted being removed from leadership billets as there were, say, 10-15 years ago. Could just be these actions are being publicized more than in prior years. Still shaking my head over the Fat Leonard fiasco. May they all rot.

Helicopter Strike Squadron Commander Removed over Negative Culture
29 Nov 2018
Military.com | By Oriana Pawlyk
The commanding officer of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 70 has been removed from his post after an investigation found his leadership contributed to a negative culture within the unit.
Capt. Vorrice Burks, commodore of Carrier Air Wing 8, relieved Cmdr. Jeffrey Franz, commanding officer of the HSM-70 “Spartans,” on Nov. 28 “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command,” said Cmdr. Dave Hecht, Naval Air Force Atlantic spokesman.
The unit, based out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida, flies MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopters.
“Command leaders are entrusted to uphold the highest standards of personal and professional conduct at all times” in order to meet the Navy’s highest standards, Hecht said.
No other officers were involved or disciplined. Franz has been temporarily reassigned within Helicopter Sea Combat Wing Atlantic, pending administrative action, he said.
Franz joined the Navy in April 1990 and became a naval aviator in 2002. He was the commanding officer of HSM-70 for approximately two years, Hecht said.

“Forfeit a $42,000 Land Rover For a Minor Drug Offense? Supreme Court Appears Skeptical of State Punishments”
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/11/28/supreme-court-hear-case-excessive-government-fines-land-rover/2127196002/
…”The disparity was at the heart of a Supreme Court oral argument Wednesday on whether the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of “excessive fines” applies to the states. If the justices rule that it does – which appeared all but certain – hefty fees, fines and forfeitures imposed by state and local governments may be in jeopardy.”
…”I don’t actually understand your argument,” Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor told Indiana Solicitor General Thomas Fisher, who defended states’ right to impose property forfeitures despite the Eighth Amendment’s protections. “If we look at these forfeitures that are occurring today … many of them seem grossly disproportionate to the crimes being charged.”
“Among examples cited by left- and right-wing groups:
A Georgia man was sentenced to pay $360 monthly while on probation for stealing a $2 can of beer.
A Missouri couple racked up $180,000 in fines for lacking turf grass in their yard.
A Michigan man who underpaid his 2011 property tax by $8.41 had his property auctioned off for $24,500.
A Colorado man was fined $678 and racked up $1,680 more in collection fees for violating open container laws and driving without proof of insurance.
A Florida homeowner who did not register a burglar alarm with the local government accrued $75 daily fines, resulting in a $115,625 lien on his property.”
Have always had a problem with forfeiture laws. To some degree, they make some sense, but are easily corrupted and tend to corrupt the departments that use/abuse them.
Perhaps the worst for me is that it is so very difficult for innocent victims of forfeiture to recover their property. It should not be so difficult for law abiding citizens to retain what is theirs, and certainly not at all difficult to regain what is theirs when their property is erroneously taken from them.
Cities, counties, states play pile on and minor offences gets you deeper and deeper. Not that I’m condoning illegal activities, but it seems a bit much. Lotsa small towns/counties that have interstates running thru them hire extra officers with pursuit vehicles, just to catch people with drugs, even small amounts for “personal use” so they can confiscate vehicle, money, ect ect. One local county has a rep for “come thru——-on vacation, come back to ——-on probation. It is a racket.
Maine has a few confiscated vehicles being used as unmarked and marked chase vehicles. Camaro, Mustang etc.
All blacked out with an ECM suite.
I do have a bit of a problem with unlimited seizure laws. However, in this case I think the seizure is justifiable on economic grounds, especially when the relatively light nature of the rest of the sentence is involved.
If I’m reading this source correctly, Indiana law apparently classifies any sale of less than 3g of heroin as a Class B felony. (Sale of 3 grams or more is a Class A felony, which has significantly higher penalties.) That means each sale is subject to a $10k fine and 6 to 20 years incarceration on conviction. The recommended sentence appears to be 10 years.
It appears that the individual in question (Timbs) was convicted of selling <3 grams of heroin. Yet he received only a year of house arrest, 5 years of probation, a relatively small fine - plus forfeited the auto used in the crime. If anything, the man should count his lucky stars he got off so easy, as it appears Timbs has admitted to participating in other drug deals for which he wasn’t prosecuted.
I suspect that the SCOTUS may incorporate the “excessive fines” part of the 8th Amendment to cover states and localities in their decision here. But it’s entirely possible that they may rule in this case that forfeiture of a $42k auto was a fair trade for not getting the recommended 10 years incarceration that Indiana sentencing guidelines recommend for the crime.
Dunno about you, but 4-5 years of being outside prison, even supervised, would certainly be worth more than $40k to me.
With the lack of solid prison sentences, forfeitures are one of the best ways to punish people. Use a car in the commission of a felony means you lose the car. I don’t see that as excessive. The car is a part of the crime. Whether that crime is drug dealing, fleeing the police, or DWI matters not to this guy.
Dumbass # 1 shouldn’t been selling dope. # 2 shouldn’t been selling dope out of a high dollar car. Shoulda known, if busted would mean confiscation. He is lucky they didn’t get more, house, bank account, property ect ect ect

I remember him from the late eighties.
Wasn’t he a Republican then?

Reading my father’s Army discharge paper this morning, I have looked up the two major battles that he fought in WW-II. The first was “The crossing of the Rhine River on 26 March 1945”.
https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/…/article/the-rhine-crossings
And the second was “The Battle for Nuremburg 20 April 1945”.
https://www.revolvy.com/page/Battle-of-Nuremberg-%281945%29
Both very significant events in the war. During his time in the Army, he served with Co.L, 180th Infantry, 45th Infantry Division. He was wounded twice; with grenade flak in his shoulder in the River crossing, and rifle fire in his leg in the Nuremburg battle. This got him the Purple Heart Medal with Oak Leaf cluster He earned several ribbons, as well as the Expert Infantryman Badge and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He qualified as a sharpshooter with the M-1 Rifle.
Wow, Frankie…You must be one proud Son.
Thank You so much for sharing a bit of your Dad’s military service during WWII.
With both wounds, he did not leave the battlefield. He was treated daily by medics to prevent infection. the Rifle slug passed through his upper leg, (he had to pull his junk to the side to show the wound), and the flak was left in, under his bicep. He fought through to the end of the war, and then went to ” the 11th Evac Hospital” for the ride home on a hospital ship, and discharge. With two wounds, a wife and 3 children, he had enough “points” to be discharged during the demobilization. He had been promoted to PFC sometime in Germany.

1 December 2012 – The USS Enterprise, the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, is officially inactivated in ceremonies held at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, completing a 51-year career in the United States Navy. In a pre-recorded speech, U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announces that the U.S. Navy’s third Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, CVN-80, will be named Enterprise. USS Enterprise (CVN-65), formerly CVA(N)-65, was the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth United States naval vessel to bear the name. Like her predecessor of World War II fame, she is nicknamed “Big E”. At 1,123 ft (342 m), she is the longest naval vessel in the world, a record which still stands. Her 93,284-long-ton (94,781 t) displacement ranked her as the 11th-heaviest supercarrier, after the 10 carriers of the Nimitz class. Enterprise had a crew of some 4,600 service members. The only ship of her class, Enterprise was the third oldest commissioned vessel in the United States Navy after the wooden-hulled USS Constitution and USS Pueblo. She was originally scheduled for decommissioning in 2014 or 2015, depending on the life of her reactors and completion of her replacement, USS Gerald R. Ford, but the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 slated the ship’s retirement for 2013, when she would have served for 51 consecutive years, longer than any other U.S. aircraft carrier. Enterprise’s home port was Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia as of September 2012. Her final deployment, the last before her inactivation, began on 10 March 2012 and ended 4 November 2012. Her official decommissioning will take place sometime in 2016 after the completion of an extensive terminal offload program currently underway.
Thank You, HMC Ret, for sharing this about the USS ENTERPRISE.
A Norfolk/VA Beach News Station, WTKR, did a story on her this past August. Thought it was interesting:

Navy’s top 5th Fleet commander found dead in his home
By: Geoff Ziezulewicz 1 hour ago
U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Scott A. Stearney, the commander of U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, was found dead in his Bahrain home Saturday, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said on Twitter. Foul play is not suspected, Richardson said. Stearney is shown here in July. (U.S. Marine Corps photo)
The commander of the Navy’s 5th Fleet was found dead in his home Saturday in Bahrain, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said on Twitter.
Vice Adm. Scott A. Stearney had assumed command of 5th Fleet and Naval Forces Central Command in May, a job that oversees U.S. naval operations in the Middle East.
Richardson said Bahraini authorities and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service are coordinating but that “at this time, no foul play is expected” in the death of the 58-year-old man.
“This is devastating news for the Stearney family, for the team at 5th Fleet and the entire Navy,” Richardson said. “He was a good friend to all of us.”
Navy officials declined further comment.
Fifth Fleet’s second-in-charge, Rear Adm. Paul Schlise, has assumed command, Richardson said.
A Chicago native, Stearney commissioned into the Navy in 1982 and was designated a naval aviator two years later, according to his command biography.
He served in numerous strike fighter squadrons, flying the F/A-18 Hornet for squadrons 87 and 136.
Stearney led Strike Fighter Squadron 131 and served in Afghanistan as chief of staff of joint task forces there.
Before taking the helm of 5th Fleet in May, he served as operations director for U.S. Central Command.

Stupidest call I have seen in a game that mattered so much. It wasn’t so much the 4th and 11, which was stupid in itself, but the risk of giving Bama the ball on the 48 put the est behind stupid.
^word^ Don’t know what the coaches from teams that are in Georgia, not just college, but the pros too. I’m not a coach and don’t play one on TV or the movies, but it seems the stupid is strong with them. The players play their hearts out, and here you go, let’s try something dumb as hell this late in the game.
Would have preferred to see the DAWGS win, but I weren’t coaching. It was a good game.
