Weekend Open Thread

| July 14, 2017

This week’s photo comes from The Other Whitey;

This photo popped up in the media a couple of days ago. You might have seen it. Two Firefighters and an Engineer from my department, the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection AKA CalFire (I still call it CDF, as it was before 2006) on a structure protection assignment in central California are grabbing a homeowner’s US Flag to ensure that it will be saved if they lose the house. As I heard it, the house was protected successfully, so removing the flag and placing it in the engine was a precaution. I could be wrong about the successful outcome, that’s just how I heard it. Wasn’t there myself.

Hopefully some people might be reminded that while California does contain far too many anti-American hippies and Berkelyites, there’s lots of Americans here, too. I would also like to think it might make up a little bit for the valor-thief phony asshole who lied his way into a Firefighter-I slot with us last year.

Commissioner Wretched

That’s cold, Ex. (Not the sneering … the cheesecake and ice cream.) I gained half a pound just looking at it.

Which makes me wonder … why does one pound of food end up being five pounds of me?

Because you love food, and it loves you right back, CW.

I’m sorry to say I got some bad news this week, my cancer has returned again! They have scheduled my biopsy surgery for August 18th to see how far it has spread and what if anything they can try and do now. We are also moving next week, so that is a real pain in the ass! I pray that all of you are doing well and I pray that my pos brother will be arrested before I die! I have a call with the VA next month to see what they have done on his case? They had better have some answers for me since I have given them their 30 days to investigate! I want this fuckers money taken away from him and given to a real vet that needs it! I want this asshole in prison before I die!!! Have a great weekend to all of you!!!

Fyrfighter

sorry to hear that WW, i hope you get good news on the 18th.

Wilted Willy

Thank you sir, the best news would be my brother being arrested!!!

Ahhhh damn work! Well Im out here in the Pacific NW so I think Id have to get up a little earlier (or be more on the ball) to make the top 25.

We are getting ready to go ride herd on some demolition activity on Hanford this weekend. So my crew of Studly Radiation Raiders and I will be getting the scenic view while we collect air samples.

WW: i had a girl on a streetglide loose control in front of my semi this week and barrel roll it at 70mph down the interstate. I missed her lying in my lane, ran to her and applied first aid to her head injury untill ems showed. Head swollen like a pumpkin with the pressure forcing blood out around her eyes. No broken bones but much road rash from wearing shorts and tshirt.
If she can survive something like that you can survive cancer. Keep fighting

I just now got approved, as part of a Beta testing program, to go ahead and shop now at the PX web site, which for all other honorably discharged veterans, will not be available until Veterans Day, Saturday 11 November 2017.

At first, I had trouble, because the system wouldn’t let me register or sign in, but when I called the 1-800 number, the guy at the other end straightened everything out, and I am now officially registered at the PX web site, and can shop there.

The only thing is – – – ,

There’s nothing I can think of that I particularly want.

John Robert Mallernee

They had sent me an e-mail informing me of the Beta testing program, and that I had been selected to participate.

It was in this morning’s e-mail.

OldSoldier54

Really!!?? ANY veteran with an Honorable, not just combat vets w/service related injuries?

I already know I don’t have anything coming with the VA … said I and HH6 make too much dinero. Meh, obviously must be the Luck O the Irish …

John Robert Mallernee

@ OLD SOLDIER 54:

This wasn’t the Department of Veterans Affairs.

It was the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.

And yes, beginning on Veterans Day, Saturday 11 November 2017, any and all honorably discharged veterans may use their web site to shop.

This is the URL:

https://www.shopmyexchange.com/

I reckon I was selected at random to be able to shop at this time.

I wonder if anyone else in this forum received a similar e-mail?

Surely, I wasn’t the ONLY one, was I?

OldSoldier54

Thanks for the heads up and info, Brother.

This is the first I’ve heard of this.

Non Cedo Ferio

I had a conversation with a guy while waiting to get my car serviced. He asked did I serve and did I deploy I said yes to both. We talked a bit and he asked if because of my service. Did I look down on civilians? I said no, anyone who truly understands about service would feel it’s an honor and a privilege to serve not to look at yourself as ” better” than others. That got me to thinking about the mentality of some of our younger vets both in my military town and online. I’m a bit bothered by a sense of entitlement and air of superiority I seem to see more of. Got me to wonder if society has changed that much or is it just me getting older. I’ve heard stories from some of my brothers who still serve. And they tell me it’s much worse with these young folks. Since I value the opinion of you guys here I’d like to hear what you have to say

Graybeard

Dunno about other parts of the US of A, but the young soldiers in this part of Texas don’t seem to have that poor attitude you describe.

Of course, the Airborne guys are superior, but they don’t rub it in.
Too much.
OK, maybe every once in a while.

Non Cedo Ferio

True. I’ve. Meet some really good young troops. I don’t mean to paint with a broad brush. I think it may be a maturity thing. But that being said. I’ve heard that the Army is bringing DS back to AIT. Because of the discipline issues. I was just curious if it was a case of me being a crusty old vet. Or a change in culture.

John Robert Mallernee

I don’t know if it’s still true, but I remember a while back that the news reported the United States Army was rejecting eighty percent of enlistments.

That might make the twenty percent who successfully entered the ranks of the United States Army feel like they were somewhat special.

And yes, paratroopers do consider themselves superior to all other living creatures!

But, the Cavalry also considers themselves rather elite, especially scouts.

While I was not in the Cavalry in Viet Nam, years after the war, I did become a scout in the Cavalry at Fort Hood, Texas.

And in Viet Nam, I loved being in the 101st Airborne, even though I was not a paratrooper.

I never really thought about it, but now that you’ve brought up the subject, I reckon I’m somewhat special, since there are so many impostors out there pretending to be what I really am, a veteran of the war in the old Republic of Viet Nam.

Yes, I reckon I might even consider myself a little better than the guys who refused to answer our Country’s call to arms, burning their draft cards, fleeing to Canada, or deserting the ranks.

Of course, now, I’m just a worn out old geezer, crippled up by a deteriorating spine and a weakened heart, living out my last days all alone.

Non Cedo Ferio

John bro, thank you very much for serving when others wouldn’t. My died at 57 from AO exposure. Vietnam vets are def among my heroes. I am sorry to hear about your bad health. I hope you find comfort in even the worst of days. I guess I’m one of those NCOs who believe that my Soldiers are my credentials it’s not that I’m not proud. I just never felt the need brag. I’d rather brag about my ” kids” who I had the honor to serve with and mentor who have done me very proud.

Btw I found in a parking lot the other day, a Citizen professional divers watch with Eco drive. I took it to the store nobody claimed it. Come to find out the dern thing retails for 425.00. It’s 300m Mixed gas watch. Anybody know anything about these watches? Just curious

Silentium Est Aureum

I have an Eco-Drive. Not as many bells and whistles as yours, but still nice.

The fact you never need batteries is a plus, and in some cases you can stick it in a drawer for a couple of months before the battery goes dead.

Set it in direct sun for 15 minutes, good to go.

Non Cedo Ferio

Thanks. bro much appreciated . Do you happen to know the purpose for the bezel on the face being able to rotate ?

Richard Deiters, MSGT USMC(Retired)

I think it has something to do with setting a visual indicator for how much longer you stay down before heading back up.

Ps manage a post in the first 100.

jonp

It’s for setting your dive time. Depending on how deep you go you can use it set how long you can safely stay underwater before having to come up due to build up of CO2 in your blood. You figure your max depth, previous dive times and use a chart to find out how long your can safely stay down then rotate the bezel as a mechanical timer. It provides a quick visual reference and was used before dive computers. A large number of divers, most at this point I think, now use a dive computer to do this for them although some, myself included, still wear a dive watch as a backup in case the computer fails. I have a Suunto Mosquito which is very good but always wear a dive watch on the other wrist. Mine is a Tissot Seastar 1000 automatic which also negates having to worry about a battery.

jonp

I should point out that one of the features of the Suunto is an easily changed battery. Using a nickle, you can take the back off and do it yourself so I always take a couple of extra batteries with me.

11b-mailclerk

CO2?

I thought Nitrogen (N2) was the concern.

IDC SARC

lol…nitrogen is the concern, not CO2 🙂

11B-Mailclerk

I figured “typo”, but who knows what new stuff people figure out these days….

Silentium Est Aureum

Nitrogen is bad in some regards, (DCS, Nitrogen Narcosis) but embolisms are what scared me worse, hence why I never do breath holds or skip breathing while diving. Even O2 poisoning can be a nasty bitch.

IDC SARC

Yeah…had a Marine embolize just coughing on the bottom of the pool on a breath hold once during MTT SCUBA training. Permanent NPQ

In Combat diving we always see more Pulmonary over-inflation syndromes and O2 toxicities than DCS.

IDC SARC

Usually it’s the guys that are overly fat, overly muscular or have had previous surgery that take a DCS hit in SCUBA in what is supposed to be a no D Dive….or repet dives because the RNT table doesn’t quite work for them.

IDC SARC

The bezel rotates to set your dive time as was previously said. One thing about the bezel though is that it should only rotate in one direction.

That precludes accidentally hitting it and losing time which can then inadvertently put you past the no decompression limits of a dive.

Non Cedo Ferio

Yup this one only rotates counter clock wise. It also has a small luminescent dot at the top of bezel. I assume that’s for low light conditions

Silentium Est Aureum

As stated above, and also why it turns to the left only.

Of course, the advent of dive computers has made the need for a dive watch pretty much irrelevant.

IDC SARC

yeah but dive computers don’t look kewl.

IDC SARC

Seen the dive mask/computer with HUD?

Faptastic idea.

11B-Mailclerk

Not a diver, so I will ask:

Do the computer gadgets actually reduce dive accidents overall (especially for new participants) or do they tend to encourage folks to exceed their safety/knowledge zone?

Silentium Est Aureum

I was one of those guys back in the early to mid-90’s when computers first became affordable (but not cheap) that I’d plan my dive in advance and give lots of shit to guys who would just hit the water and let their gadgets do the work. Even now, I check Wheel, etc., first, then use the computer as a backup, especially using NITROX gear.

Silentium Est Aureum

I would kill for one of those. Of course, I used to plan my dives when tables were the only method used. I thought when PADI came out with the Wheel that was the coolest thing ever.

jonp

Those are great watches and well respected no nonsense dive watches. If you dive in places that are off the beaten path the no battery feature is very helpful. Citizen makes some great dive watches. I’d take that off your hands if we lived close enough.

Non Cedo Ferio

It’s taking some getting used to wearing it. For one thing it very heavy even if it’s sharp looking. Im assuming. It’s heavy and thick to resist diving pressures. I don’t dive. Not sure if it’s for everyday casual wear. Yeah if we lived close enough we could work something out thanks for the great info. It’s pretty cool this that you can take this thing down almost 1000 ft. And it’s still good to go. Just looking at it from a craftsmanship perspective. Not from a diving one.

Silentium Est Aureum

They’re decent, but I’ve had a Tag Heuer for about 25 years I actually used for diving, rated to 1000 meters.

Yeah, little overkill.

Non Cedo Ferio

I’ve heard that Tag Heuer makes a great watch. To be honest this is the most expensive high speed watch I’ve ever owned I usually get a Timex expedition. Think I’m gonna hold on to it a while and maybe pass it on to my son .

IDC SARC

I’ve got several high end dive watches which look great, but I never dive with a watch that I’m not willing to lose.

OldSoldier54

” … rated to 1000 meters.”

!!?? Are you serious? It’s good down to one klick under water!?

Silentium Est Aureum

Yup. Bought it at the Navy Exchange in Pensacola for $850.

It was a bargain, even back then.

I didn’t have $5-6k for a Rolex Submariner.

(We need an edit function)

The Other Whitey

Strange how everyone who is set to expose dirt on the Clintons suddenly decides to suckstart a sidearm just prior, ain’t it? You’d almost think so many coincidentally-similar suicides connected to the same politician might be the result of foul play…

A Proud Infidel®™

The “Clinton Testimony Flu”, VERY lethal.

UpNorth

One of the people involved with the Clintons committed “suicide” by taping a plastic bag over his head. After composing a detailed suicide note, outlining that his expensive insurance policy was about to expire and woe is him.
Strange how that happens to nearly everyone in their orbit.

Ex-PH2

The person you’re talking about was a GOP donor who was trying to get Clinton’s hacked e-mails from Russian hackers. His health was so debilitated from heart disease that he had breathing difficulty walking down a few flights of stairs. He was in Minnesota at the Mayo Clinic to try to get help, to no avail, and decided to end it all.
He was NOT involved WITH the Clintons. He was trying to get the goods on that scumbag queen bitch.
I sent JL an article about this event this morning.

Ex-PH2

The individual in question was Peter W. Smith of Lake Forest, IL. He was 81.

rgr769

Now let’s be fair here. Seth Rich didn’t suicide himself after it was rumored he leaked the DNC emails to Wikileaks. He was shot in the back twice in a “botched robbery” where he was left with his wallet, money, watch and cellphone. And he just happened to expire in the hospital where he was stable for hours but no one except one doctor was allowed in his room and for some reason no one called for the crash cart. And now no one knows what happened to his laptop. Nothing suspicious about it.

OldSoldier54

Nope. Not a cursed thing suspicious at all …

I just now came here from the MERRIAM-WEBSTER web site, where I did the “DAILY CRYPTOGRAM” puzzle, the “LOS ANGELES TIMES CROSSWORD PUZZLE”, and my favorite puzzle, the “DICTIONARY DEVIL”.

Today’s “DAILY CRYPTOGRAM” was unusually difficult, and I had to make three attempts before I finally solved it.

Normally, I solve the “DAILY CRYPTOGRAM” on the first attempt, within a few minutes.

I solved the “LOS ANGELES TIMES CROSSWORD PUZZLE” in twenty-two minutes.

It was a tough one, but that’s how I like them.

So, go visit the “MERRIAM-WEBSTER” web site and enjoy the games!

Maybe you can even beat my time.

At the moment, I’m using my computer to watch the live streaming video from the railroad station at La Plata, Missouri.

In case you’re also interested, here’s the URL:

The Amtrak passenger train number 4, the “Southwest Chief” is due in, and will be arriving from the West, which is the camera view I’ve selected to watch.

La Plata, Missouri is interesting because they have an Amish community there, and they like to ride that railroad train.

In the meantime, while waiting for the “Southwest Chief” to arrive, there is usually a lot of fast freight trains, as this is a main line of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

But, I’ve also see Union Pacific trains on this line, not many, but a few.

OOPS ! ! !

As I’m typing this, the “Southwest Chief” just now pulled into the station!

According to the schedule, “IF” it runs on time, the Amtrak passenger train number Three, the “Southwest Chief”, travelling West from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California, will arrive in La Plata, Missouri at 1951 Hours Central Time.

Here is the URL for the live streaming video camera looking Eastward, the direction that railroad train will be approaching from:

Anyone else notice that they find a natural connection to other vets that isn’t there with non-vets, even when you first meet them and don’t know their history yet? I’m really noticing it with consistency at this new job, whereas previously I experienced it only a few random times.

FYI
as some here may know from prior posting from me
I got a certified letter in the mail from Uncle Sam about a recall notice
I wonder if they know I’m retired oh well I guess I’m off to fort huachuca
On Monday
Talk about confusion on my part first they retire me then the guard steps in and says I’m not
Army says I am. then I get a call plus a e-mail from a lawyer concerning me testifying
At someone’s UCMJ proceeding witch I’ve been told because of the nature of it
They have the power of the…. shit I forgot…. to put me on duty to testify I guess that would be
All well but I’m done with the confusion someone up top make up your mind
PLEASE

If anyone here watches ‘Game of Thrones’, then you know that during Season 7, winter returns to Westeros. Accuweather is jumping on the GOT bandwagon by providing a survey that tells you what character you most likely emulate, based on your response to winter questions. I was told I’m most like Jon Snow. Is he an overweening ambitious jackanapes, or a bodacious storm warrior?

Here’s the linky thingy:

Just An Old Dog

Jon Snow is derisively known by his distractors as “The Bastard of Winterfell” He was raised believing that he was the son of Eddard (Ned) Stark, Lord of Winterfell and warden of the North and an unknown mother who died in childbirth.
He was raised in Winterfell with Stark’s family but never given his father’s name. His existence was problemetical, as his conception and birth took place while Ned was fighting a war,, but also married to Caitlyn Tulley.
Caitlyn tolerates his presence but offers him no affection. He has 5 siblings who all love him as a true brother.
When he comes of age, lacking title and realizing he is never going to be accepted as anything but a bastard he pledges as a member of the Nights Watch, a group of men ( many who were sent to be punished) who defend a giant Ice Wall in the North which has stood for centuries against wild tribes on the other side and supernatural beings.
He proves himself a capable warrior and ends up leading both the nights watch ans winning the respect and fealty of the Northern Tribes.

Note for Non Cedo Ferio.

It was on this weekend (mid July) 45 years ago that 1/3 ADA finally completed the equipment/personnel move from Fort Bliss proper out to McGregor Range after being ousted from our motor pools/barracks/headquarters buildings by the 3rd ACR who had moved to Bliss from Fort Lewis.

So it was Welcome to Cacti and Coyote Land and the real fun of getting trained up to eventually end up unit moving to Fort Campbell and the 101st in November/December of 72.

Ah, those were the days. Had signed into the Battalion in mid March as one of the original 100 or so members. OJT’ed/OJE’ed my way into being the motor pool parts clerk.
