On Tuesday morning, seven National Park Service employees were seen erecting and tending to a barricade around the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. One NPS employee was operating a forklift. There usually aren’t any NPS employees working at the World War II memorial.
A couple hours later, when an Honor Flight of World War II veterans arrived, accompanied by Democratic and Republican members of Congress, the fences blocking the memorial were easily moved away, allowing the veterans to enter.
But the barriers are still at the memorial, and they’ve been reinforced. This morning, I walked by the memorial and noticed that wires had been used to tie the fences together:

I’d cut the wires and use reinforced bike locks to chain the fences to a lamp post. Not the normal bike locks, but the titanium ones that typically eat through heavy duty bolt cutters (anyone who had to cut a lock in a military locker room knows the kind I mean).
Watching the noon news: US cemeteries (e.g., Normandy) on foreign soil are closed because of the shutdown.
On top of that, employees of Lovell FHCC will get paid money on 10/19, but will only get IOUs for their second paycheck in October.
Not a joke. It was a live report so when there is a video, I’ll post it.
As the chief politician complains that the money he has been authorized to borrow runs out, he expends exponentially more money to try to keep Veterans out of a Memorial than it would cost to have a park ranger pick up the trash non-Veterans might leave on it.
It cost more money in gas, or labor, or materials, to set up the first barrier than it would have cost for a week’s worth of “maintenance,” I.e. litter pick up, that the Veterans themselves had not picked up.
B. Hussein Øbama & Co. are making every effort to keep our Nation’s WWII Memorial safe from roving bands of 80+ year old Vets of that conflict. I’m positive he’s used at least three times the money and manpower on this stunt than he did to safeguard our Diplomatic Personnel in Benghazi!!

This may be very visible but it may literally be the least important thing happening right now. I’m a republican but sorry guys, you shut down the government. You can’t complain when the parts you like aren’t open. Most of the park employees that are working are doing so without knowing when or if they are going to get paid.
The NPS has stationed officers along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal that runs 184 miles from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland to make sure nobody uses the bike paths. It would have required less manpower to keep this trail open. The handles on all the well pumps have also been removed.

Frankly, I’m waiting for the Whitehouse to order them to put up a big assed curtain around the whole memorial and say “nanny-nanny-boo-boo”

If you truly believe that slapping this nation’s veterans in the face publicly is the least important thing happening right now then I question your grip on reality.
It has been pointed out in other threads that being uncertain of the next paycheck is something the private sector has been dealing with since the economy tanked. Welcome to the party NPS (and other government services).
I challenge any of the NPS rangers providing security at various sites to justify their actions with more than “it’s my job.” If this continues, the parties will be restructured to Us and Them.
Serving a tyrannical government that has gone out of its way to antagonize veterans (and its citizens in general) has not been healthy historically.

Idk about you, but I have skin in this fight, waiting for an interview for a GS job, and with my VA disability, also, all Reserve Drills are cancelled… Then the WW2 stuff? I had a liberal idiot tell me that because this modern Nero is CINC I was obligated to worship, adore, and respect him! Ummm, no. My oath was to the Constitution, and as with the military, you respect the RANK, not the man. If he even thinks about forcing the military to swear a loyalty oath ala’ the Wermacht, then, there will be issues. He’s already referring to us as “His military”…

It has been, what, less than 48 hours since they decreed that they would allow the memorials to stay open ‘for free speech?’ Sounds to me like someone needs to claim their free speech rights as they cut the wire. Or are they signalling their opening attack on the 1st Amendment, too?
