Hickenlooper signs Colorado gun bill

| March 20, 2013

NBC reports that Governor Hickenlooper signed the Colorado scary gun bill today. How do you figure you’re not electing a major dick when his name is Hickenlooper, anyway? You know he got the snot kicked out of him every day in grade school so he’s dead set on using his office to get back at the bullies;

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed landmark new gun laws on Wednesday expanding background checks on gun purchases and limiting the size of ammunition magazines, placing the traditionally firearm-friendly state among the handful to pass new restrictions in the wake of the shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Anyway, Magpul Industries promised the other day on their Facebook page that it would take them about 30 days to produce their first magazine after they pulled up stakes and left Colorado;

We have said all along that based on the legal problems and uncertainties in the bill, as well as general principle, we will have no choice but to leave if the Governor signs this into law. We will start our transition out of the state almost immediately, and we will prioritize moving magazine manufacturing operations first. We expect the first PMAGs to be made outside CO within 30 days of the signing, with the rest to follow in phases. We will likely become a multi-state operation as a result of this move, and not all locations have been selected.

Colorado Republicans have promised to repeal the law once they kick out that guy with the funny name;

“We’re all in shock here,” state Senator Greg Brophy, a Republican, said on Wednesday. “It turns out this guy who everybody thought was a moderate Democrat is actually a gun-control governor.”

“I think the governor will be replaced by someone who has Colorado values instead of New York City values,” Brophy said. “If Republicans are returned to control we will repeal these bills immediately.”

There’s going to be a lot of that going around in the near future. That’s what happens when you pass laws without considering what the electorate has to say.

700 jobs in Magpul gone, along with less business towards the companies that supported them. Good luck, Colorado. Hope your pot parties can make up for the lost income.

Ex-PH2

Yeah, what NRPax said.

If all the magazine and ammo manufacterers left their states and settled in gun-friendly places like Wyoming and Texas, then guess where all that stuff would be located?

PintoNag

I doubt that ANY politician will start the process of getting the law repealed. It will be some Colorado resident who ends up in front of the state Supreme Court as part of a criminal case.

Joe

Magpul – door, ass, way out.

PintoNag

@4 Shit, carpet, bad dog.

NR Pax

What’s your point Joe (Assuming there is one)? Should Magpul stay in a now-business hostile state “for the greater good”?

2/17 Air Cav

@4. Joe. Middle finger. Yours. Permanent.

Twist

It’s official, Colorado is now Eastern Kalifornia.

Twist

Joe is happy that 700 people are losing their jobs. Liberals don’t care about others as long as they get their way.

DLM

I for one am glad. A-hole gov wanted to call their bluff and Magpul was holding the winning cards. Now, if Springfield would move too as well as all other manufacturers in blue states.

Oh, my hunting trips to CO every two years, well I will be spending my money in Wyoming instead. Flying to Montana now will not go through CO.

DLM

Scratch first sentence. I am NOT glad.

Hondo

Joe: what 2/17 Air Cav said. For you and your horse.

K.J. Hinton

They should pass a law to check the governor’s THC levels BEFORE he signs legislation.

The Lurker Formerly Known As Curt

@4- Hey, Joe, here’s my middle finger as well. Sure wish you could get your head out of your fourth point, but I imagine it’s been there solong that surgery would be required. Dumbass…

NR Pax

@9: Twist, they are the “wrong” kind of company and the money-crapping unicorns will cover the losses.

Ex-PH2

Joe – Phillips head screwdriver, sideways, sit and rotate.

Hondo, that should be DOG, not horse. Think about it.

Hondo

Ex-PH2: since it was Joe, I almost said “bike” instead – but decided to stay close to the famous Paul Reubens quote.

Old Trooper

What people like Joe “the drooling moonbat dumbfuck” don’t understand is that it won’t only be Magpul leaving with their jobs. My cousin owns a sports store in Colorado and she has said that they will probably have to close up shop (they sell firearms as a majority of their business), so even the small businesses are going to be hit and hit hard. How’s that fighting for the small business thing working out for you and your dumb fuck friends, there, Joey?

BTW, Joey, all those tube fed .22 rifles are now illegal, because the tube holds more than 15 rounds, assmunch.

Joe

Jobs and all are great all things being equal, but thankfully companies like Magpul are not aboe to blackmail the state gov’t.

PintoNag

Colorado will find out what Montana did: you need industry to finance a state. Tourism alone won’t do it, no matter how much money comes into the state that way.

Ex-PH2

Keep smokin’ that toke, Joe.

You just insist on letting everyone in the blue-eyed world know what a dumb, stump-sucking ignoramus you are.

Keep it up.

ChopIT

I haven’t read the CO bill… (Thank God I live in Texas!)… but if he’s limiting ammo amount, won’t this also affect BB/Pellet (.177 caliber) guns?

There goes a whole lot more than just scary “assualt weapons”…

ChopIT

Sorry for the misspelling – “Assault”

NR Pax

It’s not about (or aboe if that’s how you prefer to spell it) a business blackmailing the government. Businesses provide income to a state and they employ people. If you make it too difficult for a business to operate, they will leave to friendlier areas. This is what we call a Bad Thing because now the state loses income.

cannoncocker

Magpul will probably come out of this a more successful company anyway. The states that want them have even offered to pay their moving expenses. A lot of people (myself included) will now go out of their way to buy more Magpul products simply because of the healthy respect we have for their dedication to Constitutional principles. The proof lies in the availability of Pmags. Do you know what Pmags are Joe? They’re those scary 30 round high capacity magazines that you’re so scared of, specifically Magpul’s brand of high capacity magazines that are constantly in high demand because of their reliability and durability. This issue in Colorado will only help to increase their sales. You’ve lost this one Joe. Just concede defeat and drive on.

ohio

Yet no one notes that most of the murders committed in the Aurora theatre were done with a 12 guage.

USMCE8Ret

Dickensucker needs to go.

Twist

Blackmail Joe? You mean like the State threatening to cut sheriff’s pay if they didn’t get behind the ban?

Joe

A state has to make its choices – there are bigger businesses in COlorado, and bigger issues, than little Magpul. Now we’ll see if it was all bluster on Magpul’s part, or if they’re really gonna take their ball and go home like a spoiled child.

cannoncocker

Yes, explain to me how Magpul was trying to blackmail the state of Colorado Joe?

Twist

So Joe is ok with blackmail as long as it’s his side doing it.

NR Pax

@30: Because “Shut up,” Joe explained.

cannoncocker

I’ve already said this Joe….other states (Texas to be specific, and a few others) have offered to pay for Magpul’s moving costs for them. This is a win for Magpul above anything else. Their business will expand, they will become more successful, and they will likely turn into a multi-state operation now because of this. Keep whining Joey.

Joe

I hope they’ll be very happy together.

NHSparky

@8-Twist-it’s been that way in Denver/Boulder since I lived there in the 70’s.

Fucking John Denver.

And just when you thought Frederico Pena and Patricia Schroeder were the biggest jokes in the history of Colorado politics, along comes Hickenlooper.

Oh, and Joe? Fat dicks. Bag. You. Eat.

cannoncocker

Lol, that’s all you got? “I hope they’ll be very happy together.”? You’re not even fun anymore Joey.

NHSparky

Tourism alone won’t do it, no matter how much money comes into the state that way.

Shhhhhh…don’t tell Joey that. He thinks his town is supported by a little tourist choo-choo and a ski resort, not that “eeeeeevilllll” oil, or farming, etc.

Joey, you and the other douchebags are about as representative of REAL (yeah, I said it–REAL, as in NATIVE) Coloradoans as idiots in LA are representative of the entire state of CA, etc.

IOW, you’re just a representation of what happens when stupid people concentrate–and I don’t mean mentally concentrate, scooter.

Hondo

Let me spell out for Joe why he should be concerned about businesses leaving his state.

1. Less business means less tax revenue.
2. Bad publicity means less tourism, particularly from hunters. This in turn means even less tax revenue.
3. Less tax revenue means government cutbacks. (Unlike the Federal government, states usually can’t print money or borrow enough to cover truly huge deficits. They often are required by state constitution or law to have a balanced budget.)
4. Government cutbacks affect schools too.
5. Teachers unions are strong.
6. Teachers will be the last to go. Support staff w/o educational credentials will go first.
7. IT support staff is far less essential than other support staff, and probably has less seniority on average. So guess who likely goes first when cuts to support staff begin?

PintoNag

Joe did make a valid point in #29. Little businesses won’t be able to affect the outcome. It will take the big players to bring the politicians to heel.

NHSparky

Hondo–don’t look now, but guess how much revenue the state of Colorado is going to lose from lack of out-of-state hunting permits just this year alone.

I looked it up, and holy shit, CO charges $351 for a non-resident DEER permit? AYFKM? And nearly $600 for an elk?

Oh, and Joey? The costs to the state go FAR beyond that. Business which depend on those hunters (lodges/cabins, guides, restaurants, etc.,) all pay taxes and collect sales taxes. Guess what ain’t going to the state now?

cannoncocker

Hondo, common sense business practice means nothing to Joey. In keeping with good Liberal ideology, business is bad. Free handouts are good. Magic fairies create enough money to support government with enough leftover for free handouts. Businesses get in the way of those free handouts. The more money businesses make, the less money there is for the free handouts. The more money a business makes, the less money their employees make. Ergo, businesses need to make LESS money, so that their employees can make MORE money. Doesn’t everyone know that?

Twist

“Tourism alone won’t do it, no matter how much money comes into the state that way.”

There is already calls for boycotts from hunters. Hotels, the food service industry, gas stations, etc will all feel the hurt from loss of revenue.

NHSparky

Pinto–little businesses might not be able to survive the outcome, either.

And what happens when Joey gets his panties in a wad over the shortfall and starts going after those large businesses who don’t pay their “fair share” or whatever the hell that is?

Hondo

cannoncocker: you’re probably right. Still, it would be poetic justice if Joe’s job were affected by declines in tax revenues due to this bit of stupidity on the part of the CO legislature and governor. And that’s not beyond the realm of possibility.

PintoNag

@43 Agreed. I wouldn’t hunt in any state that had any kind of gun ban in effect. It’s too easy to end up sitting in a jail cell because of unknown, unforeseen, or uncontrollable circumstances.

PintoNag

Sorry, #45 was a response to #42, not #43.

Hondo

NHSparky, Twist: correct. Each dollar spent generally turns over multiple times. And each job lost or created typically causes the loss or creation of others indirectly.

Bottom line is that when Magpul leaves, it ain’t gonna be only their 700 employees in CO who end up out of a job. I’d guess 2-3 times that overall. Say around 1500+ jobs (with accompanying sales and income taxes) plus whatever corporate taxes Magpul was paying.

And I won’t even guess how much revenue they’re going to lose from hunters who decide to go to WY, MT, UT, ID, NM, or AZ instead, once the hit to the hospitality and transportation sectors are factored in.

Veritas Omnia Vincit

@28 Absolutely, which is just like this kind of blackmail: “hey your product was legal yesterday but it’s maybe not today so you could make it in Colorado, but you maybe can’t sell it here…”

What’s the incentive to do business under that circumstance?

NHSparky

VOV–I ask myself the same question when Thompson Center Arms closed up shop in my hometown and moved to MA, for Chrissakes. But they were bought out by Smith and Wesson, so I guess there’s that, but then again, how many of the guns S&W makes are legal in MA?

NHSparky

Hondo–when I was in HS, I lived in NM, not far from Joey’s town, by coincidence. It was not at all unusual for me and my father to hunt in both NM and CO.

I know that were my father here today, and a similar situation presented itself, there’s no way in hell we’d be hunting in CO. I’m only sad for members of my family who still live in CO on the Western Slope. They’ve got to be shaking their heads and wondering what kind of idiots are running the show over in Denver.
