Following the Science – or Not

Two parter today. Part one is all about an old human-ancestor skull. Old, as in REAL old – recent analysis suggests it is not only the oldest skull known, but that the human race is twice as old as previously thought, 1,300,000 years old. Gee, you’d think we’d have learned something useful by now.

The skull, known as Yunxian 2 (pictured above), was initially discovered in central China’s Hubei province in 1990. For decades, it remained difficult to classify because time had badly warped and crushed the bone. But new 3D scanning and digital reconstruction techniques allowed researchers to virtually “fix” the damage and see what the skull originally looked like.

This unique combination suggests the skull belongs to an early ancestor of the Denisovans, a mysterious group of ancient humans known mainly through DNA analysis. The Denisovans lived across Asia and occasionally interbred with both Neanderthals and early modern humans.

Perhaps most importantly, the skull’s age forces scientists to completely revise when human species first appeared. Previous research suggested that modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans all split from a common ancestor between 500,000 and 700,000 years ago.

The new analysis pushes these dates back dramatically. According to the researchers, Neanderthals branched off first around 1.38 million years ago, followed by the split between Denisovans and modern humans about 1.32 million years ago. This means our own species, Homo sapiens, can now be traced back over a million years — roughly double the previous estimate.

My first question, was can’t they just date it like other old stuff – like Carbon-14 dating? Found that Carbon-14 has a half-life of a tad under 6,000 years, and that it’s really only useful for dating things up to about 60,000 years old. I am guessing by 20 times that far, its usefulness is “limited”.

No word whether “You Denisovan” is going to replace Neanderthal is an insult for guys. I doubt it, just doesn’t have the right ring.

And in other science news – the CDC revised its website, now saying that studies showing links between autism and vaccinations have been ignored. Seemingly, no actual scientific or medical input from actual qualified people was used.

Career scientists at the agency responsible for information about vaccine safety and autism had no prior knowledge about the changes to the website and were not consulted, according to five agency officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

Before the Wednesday update, the CDC webpage stated that studies have shown that there is “no link” between vaccines and developing autism, and that “no links” have been found between any vaccine ingredients and the disorder, according to archived webpages.

The current CDC page says that studies supporting a link between vaccines and autism “have been ignored by health authorities.”

I actually know someone who is a firm adherent to the old flat-earth idea. I ignore their input on such matters. Back to the CDC:

It states: “The claim ‘vaccines do not cause autism’ is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism.”

The revisions show that the “CDC cannot currently be trusted as a scientific voice,” said Demetre Daskalakis, who formerly led the agency’s center responsible for respiratory viruses and immunizations. He was one of three senior leaders who resigned in August because of what they said was the politicization of science at the agency. “The weaponization of the CDC voice by validating false claims on official websites confirms what we have been saying,” he said.

The changes also prompted pushback from Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana), a physician and chairman of the Senate’s health committee. Cassidy has been a vocal proponent for vaccination. But he set aside his misgivings about Kennedy to vote for his confirmation after receiving commitments, including to not remove language on the CDC website pointing out that vaccines do not cause autism.

Well, guess that proves the RFK Jr. is a politician. Certainly is not a recognized scientist. Or doctor. Or even nurses’ aide, as far as I can tell.

The false claim that vaccines cause autism can be traced to a 1998 article that has since been retracted, but it has persisted for decades in anti-vaccine messaging that has repeatedly come up in conversations at pediatricians’ offices. The connection has been repeatedly disproved through dozens of studies examining hundreds of thousands of children around the world.  WaPo

As someone who has friends who had polio and other diseases now mostly eradicated, I sincerely hope that RFK and his ilk refuse any and all vaccinations for their entire families. Darwin smiles.

(Also old enough to remember the significance of this date. Lord, how the country – and that family – have fallen.)

Too many vaccines at once can do great harm on a child.

Stacy0311

Yep. THIS vaccine doesn’t contribute to autism. THIS vaccine doesn’t either. Not does this one. BUT if you combine them into 1 mega vaccine or give in rapid succession, there MIGHT possible be some side effects

Vaccines are a difficult subject, and the CDC (or science in general) has not exactly covered itself with glory recently. RFKjr has been talking about the schedule/number given to children from birth to school age for years. Mine were born in 1978 and 1982. They had less than 10 in the five/6 years. I’ve read that children now get between 25 and 30 in the same time period.

The makers of Tylenol have said for years that pregnant women should consult their doctors before taking it. In that speech RFKjr gave Tylenol was not banned, he said that there were some circumstances that it should be used. The paper from Harvard in 2024 said there MAY be a higher RISK of autism associated with Tylenol use. There have been papers saying the same thing since at least 2014. Correlation does not equal causation but it does suggest research is needed.

Covid lockdowns caused a lower use of medical care in general, and yes, with pediatricians. The Covid idiocy caused uncertainty in general with vaccines. It’s also been clear that large numbers of unvetted migrants brought a lot with them. RFKjr has been sending out measles vaccines, by the way. Watching from just outside DC the fearmongering has been largely from the media. My son had a very bad reaction to the second DTP shot, severe enough that his doctor did not give him the Pertussis booster at 4. My daughter did get the series but it was hard to allow. The media yelling at parents who are hesitant, often for more than one reason, does not help the situation.

At least these gals/guys aren’t a bunch of numb sculls to figure this out…..

As to RFK being a politician, why is that a surprise? Just what was his gig prior to the health director’s spot again?

I have noticed that measles have already started making a come back. I am waiting to see other childhood diseases like whooping cough, diphtheria, typhoid and polio resurface due to the lack of vaccinations from both the anti vaxers and the millions of third world illegal aliens that biden imported.

I recall a story not that long ago that the very last iron lung user had finally passed away and that no more of those devices were in use. I hope they stored them properly because I think there is going to be a need for them again because of stupidity.

Carbon dating can’t be done on fossils, only on organic matter. The age of a fossil can be determined by where it was located in rock strata, by dendrochronolgy of associated fossilized wood and plant matter, or radio activity measurments.

Nah.
I have been following the Yunxian 2 research and there is a lot of bullshit in it.

First, the Chicom government have for decades been investing in research to prove their pet theory that Chinese people evolved in China. There is an strong ideological push to see China as the first at everything, from inventing technologies to evolving as human first.

Then there is the dating methods used for Yunxian 2. DNA does not survive past 20k years or so, current reconstructed DNA methods push the dates to about 80k, which is how we go DNA from the Denisova caves. Everything we know so far about the Denisovans rest on a tooth and a pinky finger bone, whose DNA was successfully processed. And now we can identify Denisovan DNA in current populations in Asia. Keep in mind that DNA cannot be used directly to date bones, but its molecular clock comparison would tell us how many generations ago Denisovan separated from other Homo, serving as roundabout way to date.

David talked already about the radiocarbon 14 method, who only goes about 60k, and that means the method they are using to date Yunxian 2 is geological dating, which is the most inaccurate method ever, because, for example, bones can be move from a sediment layer to another due water floods or other environmental events.

The most accurate dating for Yunxian 2 is based on magnetostratigraphy which records magnetic field reversals, is that Yunxian 2 is between 830k and 870k.

Do not believe the Chinese government!

I keep telling you, if you continue to post smart shit like this, you’re gonna have to change your name.

And four times as stupid.

Wait, the Denisovans?!?! Aren’t they allied with the Krasnovians and the Atropians?

Don’t leave out the Distopians.

I as well!

22 November 1963…. I was in 5th grade at Seaside Elementary, at lunch, when news of President Kennedy’s assassination came over the PA system. We were all released home. I arrive home to find my father (1st SFG @ DLI, Thai) watching the news, crying. Never saw him cry before or after, EVER. He worshiped Kennedy because the president authorized the Green Beret for the US Special Forces in 1962. Dad said they unofficially wore the Canadian green beret in the field before that.

Dad went from the 505th to the 77th SFG sometime around 1953~54 and was a team sergeant E7 just after the 10th was formed, split, and relocated to Germany. A Finnish-born corporal was on his team …. Larry Thorne (Lauri Törni). After commissioning and some leg assignments, Dad went back to SF (6th, 5th, and Training Group), ending up as a regimental advisor to the King’s Own Bodyguard (11th Rgt) in Thailand.

Dad loved the SF and worshiped Kennedy. They had no “challenge coins” then, but said everyone carried a Kennedy Half-Dollar — I still have his.

… sorry about the rabbit hole.
