The folks at Military Phonies send us their research on this 90-year-old World War II veteran, Andrew Nelson. He’s been telling people that he was a frogman for at least 18 years. Here he tells the Hartford Courant in 1999;
And the Post and Courier in 2005;
He claims that he earned a Bronze Star for Valor and a Purple Heart;
Well, he was a veteran of World War II and despite his claims that he was in the Korean War, his service during that war was limited to working in Maryland.
During WWII, he was assigned to the USS Kishwaukee, a fuel ship that supported the Okinawa and Philippine campaigns, but probably far from the battle given their cargo. He was a yeoman (a clerk);
He was finally discharged in 1952. In 1954, he wrote to the Navy asking what awards he earned for the Korean War;
They responded that he’d earned the NDSM.

Grandpa was a Sailor in WWII who actually did get decorated for valor. He didn’t keep his medals, his crackerjacks, nothing, except paperwork that he stuffed in a box when he was discharged and never saw the light of day again until after his death in ’92. He wasn’t just humble, he actively denied having done anything noteworthy.

I had a Great Uncle who fought in the Pacific Campaign in WWII and I never had even a clue that he ever served. I loved every minute I got to spend with him, he had been through a lot of very hairy shit and never mentioned a word about it. Stories about jerks like this wannabe lend further credence to the saying “Those who have been through the most talk about it the least.” I grew up knowing WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam Vets, and those who had been there and done the most talked about it the least.
Not always what really happened. Talking about what happened in combat, for me was a relief valve. Otherwise I think, I wood have taken myself out.
Everyone of us handles combat stress differently. To say someone talks about it, never really experienced it is total bullshit.

My family has one remaining “living” WWII vet a retired Chief Yeoman USNR. I put the living in quotes as she has been suffering from dementia/Alzheimers for twenty+ years now.

I have a friend who’s done a lot for me over the passing years, and yes, I’ve been there for him whenever he needed me. During the war in the old Republic of Viet Nam, he served as a Machinist Mate on a United States Navy oiler, the USS HASSAYAMPA, a ship which holds the Navy’s record for conducting the most refueling operations during that war. He’s authorized to wear the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Viet Nam Service Medal, and the Republic of Viet Nam Campaign Medal. He was displaying the Bronze Star Medal on the wall of his living room, but his son, currently a career gunnery sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and a wounded Iraq War veteran, made him remove it from the display case because there was no paperwork to authorize it. He tells me stories of being ashore in Viet Nam, under fire on a riverine craft, and killing an NVA charging the dock where he was on guard duty, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. But, I don’t want to call him a liar or an imposter. I have no proof that he’s lying about his military service, just as he has no written proof that those incidents are true. After all, as a Specialist Four, E-4, Field Radio Relay and Carrier Equipment Repairman (MOS 312L20) in the Signal Corps of the United States Army, I too, was “in the rear with the gear”, but even so, I was repeatedly subjected to rocket and mortar attacks, sniper fire, a booby trap (where I got my souvenir punji stake), and even a firefight on the perimeter when I was on guard duty, plus having a grenade detonated in my hooch when I was sleeping. I was present at an awards ceremony and saw the CO pin a medal on the Sailor’s chest in 1995. To this day the paperwork has never come through.

That’s the same story my friend tells, and a few years ago, he showed me an official US Navy black and white photograph of himself, standing on the dock in a line with other sailors, as someone is pinning a medal on his chest.
So, maybe what he says is true.
Screw this old guy and his stories but it was kind of cool to see military records from that era. His Pro/Cons were pretty good back in the day too.

His picture is currently on display in the basement conference center in the Mark Center, officially part of the Pentagon reservation, off I-395 in northern Virginia. After reading this post, I went down and checked and it is the very photo at the top of this post.

the curator said that the photos on display are part of an art exhibit by a professional photographer. He is going to contact the photographer and let him know.
