The folks at Military Phonies send us their work on this Thomas Beaumont fellow. He claims to be the most decorated soldier of the 1968 Tet Offensive with his four Bronze Star Medals, his Purple Heart and some sort valor award from the South Vietnamese.
Yeah, he has four bronze stars – four bronze service stars on his Vietnam Service Medal denoting the campaigns that happened during the war while he was in the country. His VSM would look like this;
Even if we gave him a pass for being ignorant about the four bronze service stars, though, there’s still the Purple Heart claim. His assignments show him as a patient in Japan at the end of his Vietnam tour beginning on October 11th – October 15th. Ten days later, October 25th, he’s back on the block, out on the street growing his hair long. That makes me think that his stay in the hospital was due to an illness and not a war injury, especially since he was an ammo records clerk. Either way, there’s no Purple Heart in his records. Scotty tried to tell him about the 4 Bronze Stars, but he wasn’t hearing of it.

Sure. If you have total permanent rating for PTSD then apply for some physical issue and they grant you a rating for that, they can add up to more than 100% but you can only be compensated for 100% max. The rest is just window dressing but if you lose the PTSD (rare) you would still have the other rating to be compensated for.
I could be wrong tho.
Legally I’m 170% Service Connected. That is my combined rating. They don’t pay over 100% unless you are 100% and have another rating of at least 60%. Here’s the clincher, there are no 5’s in ratings. You can be combined at 140 or 150 but never 145. So just there he’s bullshit. Have caught bullshit artist at this a bunch of times before saying they were 23%, 25%, 75%, etc. Also guys like him will tell you that they were awarded a PTSD evaluation, but “never applied for it. The doctors said I was so messed up that they just awarded it to me.” Or equally rated bullshit. No application, no award unless you are granted upon discharge, but still the paperwork goes in, just when you’re about to ETS, instead of after.
I still don’t understand VA math. I think the same people that do VA math are the same people that came up with the common core. Makes no sense.
It is weird and baffling to everyone. At one time I had 2 90% ratings that combined came out 90%. Although I never had to apply for “unemployability”, they do have that as an option for when you are stuck at 70% or more and can’t work. Again, it’s very weird and in all my time at a Vet Center and DOD, I could never figure it out.

I was told I had no rights at VA when I was discharged. For 35 years I suffered from those injuries and the memories of TET. I have expounded on occasion what I witnessed. It seems to me there are some problems with the details of Beaumont’s story. According to the DD-214, he was a FNG with the 661st Ordnance Company when the Tet Offensive started. In the interest of fairness, he gets points for being in a nasty situation; his ordnance supply unit was in Qui Nhon which was one of the provincial capitals attacked during the early hours of January 30, 1968.
Here’s a problem: It was an odd quirk at the time that the main combat unit in the AO, the 173rd Airborne, had split its operations. The headquarters for the brigade was at LZ English near Bong Son, but a lot of the support functions were in Qui Nhon which probably included the 661st Ord Co. If Beaumont was wounded while with his ordnance unit, it seems unlikely a dust-off would have been called because the main hospital for the 173rd was also in Qui Nhon.
There’s also a timing problem with his return to CONUS. If Beaumont had been wounded during the Tet Offensive, it’s duration was only about two weeks, it’s doubtful if the Army would have kept him around on convalescent status until October when he was sent to Japan. If memory serves, the drill at the time was that minor wounds got you treated and sent back to your unit. Patients with major wounds were kept long enough to be stable before getting a med-evac out.
I was with the 2/35th (Cacti Blue) 4th ID in 1969/70. Our casualties were almost always medevaced to the 67th Evac. Hospital located at Qui Nhon back then. So, I’m calling bullshit too on his dust-off to someplace else.

From what I could see, he served honorably enough, someone’s got to be the clerk in the support unit, but no, he has to make a hero out of himself believing he’ll never be outed. Some folks can’t just own what they did. I did my tour too(’69-’70), but you won’t hear me making any claims. I was just another guy in OD green doing his job.

Maybe he took some whipped cream and sprinkles, stuck a candle in his ass and was, in fact, the most decorated soldier in Vietnam. Otherwise, not even close. I especially like his perspective that he “earned” a Purple Heart. I’m not sure what that means but I’m quite sure I don’t want to know.

Just another lying REMF and poser stealing the valor of better men. I agree with Jonn that this ass-clown prolly had a minor injury or illness that caused his five day hospitalization. Also, nobody in a position to get the VC/NVA marksmanship badge wanted to “earn” one. Sometimes it was “earned” because you were standing in the wrong place at the wrong time, not because you were doing something heroic. I am quite happy I never received either a wound or a Purple Heart, although I came damn close a couple of times.
