Jim Foley: NH State Senator, phony Marine
Someone sent us a link to the story from the New Hampshire Union Leader in regards to a sitting Republican state senator by the name of Jim Foley, who has been fooling his constituents with a story for decades about him being a Marine. The story is kind of muddled so, if I get details wrong, blame Foley.
But, sometime in the middle 80s, he was disbarred for cheating his law firm out of money. Somehow or another, after he was disbarred, he joined the Marine Corps to kick his drug addiction (I know, that happens every day, doesn’t it).
The Marine Corps says, according to the article, that the only record they could find on him was his name and his social security number, no record of training or even showing up for anything. Of course, it was the drugs that made him do it. But then he started wearing the above pictured uniform of a Marine Captain with a Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart, along with some jump wings and what might be a scuba bubble. I guess the drugs made him do that, too.
Foley bills himself as a former Marine on his campaign website. He makes no reference of ever having practiced law.
The state Senate primary is Tuesday.
On Friday, Foley said he believes he has run a good campaign and hopes his supporters will see the release of the documents in perspective.
“I am embarrassed that these revelations have come to light,” said Foley. “I believe in many ways I have let down my supporters. I find, and I have been told, that the voters are fair. They recognize this is being done as a political ploy by a desperate opponent. And I will do the best I can and hope the man they’ve known for the last 10 to 15 years is the man they will vote for. I don’t know the man from 30 years ago.”
Foley has two primary opponents, Derry Rep. Frank Sapparetto and Hampstead Rep. Regina Birdsell.
Foley did not identify whom he considered his “desperate opponent.’’
Birdsell called on Foley to withdraw from the race.
“A political ploy by a desperate opponent?” Dude, you falsified government documents, wore a uniform you didn’t earn, and lied to voters for the last decade or so. If there is a political ploy involved, it’s yours.
I see that he suspended his campaign over the weekend;
“I have taken full ownership for any mistakes made. I am sorry for these mistakes and take full responsibility for them. After many conversations with friends and supporters I have decided to end (suspend) my campaign for the state senate. While I know this will disappoint many of those who have urged me to continue, I feel that my decision is in the best interest of both the voters of the district and my family, particularly in light of some of the personal attacks they have had to endure. I do not want this to become a distraction from the important task at hand – electing a solid conservative Republican to the New Hampshire Senate from District 19.
I am honored to have my family, friends and supporters stand by even to this day but it is the right thing to do for all involved.”
Well, at least he didn’t have to explain his “wide stance”, but good riddance.

Dang – I’ve got a whole new respect for Marines. We didn’t get to do any of that stuff when I was in the Army although I did stack lumber in my garage once…
I wonder if this is translates as “couldn’t keep a steady job after voluntarily surrending his law license”?
‘couldn’t keep a steady job’ – OK, Hondo, the idea that you only do ONE kind of work EVER is long since outdated. It shows no flexibility or adaptability to new skills or changing work environments. I’ve worked in several different fields, and they ALL required flexibility and adaptability, especially the job I retired from.
On the other hand, Foley comes off as rather a lost soul unable to find his true calling, so he has to lie about what he’s done, just to make himself look good. This happens. Some people do this and end up as those old farts at the end of the bar, griping about how mean life was to them, and other people turn it into funny stories.

Foley is a pathological liar, who has fooled people for years with his “charm”. Plain and simple.
Wasn’t implying that, Ex-PH2. However, getting disbarred due to stealing from clients and forging documents is IMO symptomatic of a much deeper issue: an essentially dishonest nature. That in turn often leads to the inability to work within a given line of employment for very long – employers catch on, and word gets around.
Dunno if that was the case here. But it does seem to be a common pattern.
Well, most of the jobs were low-level sales, and there is a common misconception that all salesmen lie all the time. Maybe he is trying to put that lying asshole experience to work?
Hmmm … I have stacked lumber (building lumber and plywood, not firewood) while in the Army. Done a bunch of other things that weren’t in my MOS description too.
— Loaded and unloaded luggage from aircraft
— Filled water tankers at a water point
— Burned cut in half 55gal drums full of piss and crap
— Painted rocks white
— Used Diesel and/or MoGas in immersion heaters to heat water for hot showers
— Worked a communications node in the middle of no where for seven days
— Repaired small generators that someone used the wrong fuel in
— Ditto for water pumps
— Ran a Backhoe
— Ran a D5 Dozer
— Drove a 50-60 passenger bus
And a lot more … way to many things to list. Most of them were doing Desert Storm though, and everyone took a turn at them. Not like I was being singled out or anything.

I was there during the “Pine Cone Rebellion” when group had to perform post details. Several Team Sergeants refused to wear their berets (an award at the time) and wore the Snuffy hats. It it the fan fast. Civilian PT attire was the uniform for some in Group afterwards.
