Steven James Doyle; phony SF

Steve James Doyle hat

Scotty sends us his latest, one each Steven James Doyle who claims he was Special Forces with the 12th and 1st SFGs and was wounded near the Pakistan border with Afghanistan in 2007.

Steve James Doyle Pakistan 2007

Well he might have been, but he was discharged from active duty in 1992 according to the records center and then he did nine more years in the Guard and discharged in 2002, so he wasn’t injured while in the Army;

So maybe he was assigned to an SF unit. Nope;

Bob, what was your time frame as a door gunner. What was your squadron nickname? We had some Army gunships give us fire support at Hue and some other LZs? Joe

@28, 34 and 35: When 11th and 12th SF Groups (USAR) were “inactivated” :rolleyes: they didn’t neccessarily go away, many of the units were reassigned to the two existing SF Groups in the NG. When I was in 5/19th SFG (COARNG) our B and C companies were local (Pueblo and Fort Collins, respectively) while our A Co was a former 12th SFG unit in Los Alamitos, CA. Even they weren’t a full company in 2000, they had 2 or 3 ODAs up near San Francisco.

For those not familiar with SF TO&E, it’s worth mentioning that in a typical SF Group (Brigade-sized unit, commanded by a full bird colonel), only about 50% of the personnel are 18-series, that is, SF qualified. The Group has a pretty sizeable Support Company, and each battalion (there are 3 battalions in a group) also has a support company.

The Support Company of the battalion consists of four elements: The Headquarters Detachment (which has the various staff officers and their soldiers, most of whom are not SF), the Service Detachment (cooks, mechanics, armorers, parachute riggers, paper pushers, etc); the Signal Detachment, which has some SF qualified signallers (18E) but also a lot of non-SF signal types to run the Signal Center (SIGCEN); and finally the MI Detachment, which has the intel analysts, CI agents, and SOTA teams (voice and non-voice interceptors), with NO SF qualified personnel.

Support guys claiming “I was SF” are not uncommon, unfortunately. They can legitimately claim to be assigned to an SF battalion, and know enough of the lingo to pass by even some experienced (non-SF) veterans. Most are airborne qualified. Adding to the confusion, support personnel even wore green berets until 1993 (I still have mine, even though I was never SF qualified.)

It makes me so damned mad when we can’t get our Green Berets credit for the things they do EVERY DAMNED DAY, but some son of a bitch can make claims like this. I literally shake with anger when I think about it. I have more than an ODA’s worth of good Americans who I know who have made the one way trip, and many more who are suffering daily from their wounds and assholes like this are reaping unearned benefits.

ODA 112 12th SFGA

The 12th SFGA deactivated on 15 SEP 95, but most of us were put out in 1993 and 1994. I asked my old team Sergeant about this guy and he never heard about him. As a group we did not get together much we had interaction but mostly in our company and ODA’s in St Louis, Little Rock and KC. This guy makes me sick I am glad you all have built this site and do your fact checking, my SGM put me onto this site.

what a chimp.

YN1/DEPUTY

Hey Mr.Zorne. Did you ever know a guy named Jesse James who was from Maine and was supposed to be a Green Beret. When I was stationed up there he was a civilian who talked alot about it. I never could figure out if it was true or not.

William Miller

I am not surprised that when you are doing top secret intel your team is not going to talk about it. So it looks like it was a successful Black ops. 🙂
