Steven L. Dan; the phony Ranger
The folks at fake Warriors send us the background they did on one Steven Lawrence Dan of Monroe, Ohio. Apparently, he got into a skirmish of sorts with a fellow employee and had to write a letter of apology to his boss and a couple of other people. I wouldn’t even stick my nose in except he hit a couple of my hot button issues in his apology. In explaining away his apparently violent behavior, he wrote;
…, if I may I would like to let you know a little about my past. I know you know some but here are the highlights so to speak. Before I started in the HVAC trade I was a soldier in the United States Army. More specifically I was an Army Ranger stationed at Ft. Benning in Georgia. I served just over 10 years on active duty with 5 combat tours between Afghanistan and Iraq, plus other deployments before the tragedy of 9/11. I have been awarded two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts. Just before 9/11, I tried out for and made it into the Ranger Reconnaissance Detachment. We performed all of the long range reconnaissance for Special Forces teams and spearheaded assault missions, including the invasion of both Afghanistan and Iraq. I am not telling you about my past to sway your opinion of me one way or the other. I am trying to convey a reason as to why I reacted the way that I did. With a background like mine I think you can understand that violence and anger is second nature to me. I am not the kind of person to run away from gunfire. I run towards it.
Well, if by Ranger, he means a cannoncocker and if by Fort Benning, he means Fort Sill, and if by “spearheaded assault missions in Afghanistan and Iraq after 9-11”, he means assault missions from Fort Living Room to Fort Refrigerator, then he’s absolutely correct.
I guess the two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts were all consolidated into an Army Commendation Medal to save on paperwork.
Someone wrote to tell us that he’s about to compound his asshattery;
He uses this “elite status” to attain financial gain as well as fool friends, family, law enforcement, and the courts. He is in the process of covering his body with military insignia, in particular tattoos boasting of his Ranger prowess.
Yeah, well, maybe a blog post of his records on the search engines will stop that from happening.

Smitty, it seems you are saying we should be able to go to war, seek out and engage the enemy, kill them and no one on our side should ever get injured or killed. Because according to your logic, it is all avoidable if everyone does their job. I was in Vietnam and it was not the case there. No matter how many precautions were taken on patrols, how much training and experience was applied to our efforts, the enemy was there and waiting to kill us. By your logic the only way to never have deaths or injuries in war is to never go out after the enemy but stay in base camps and hide from incoming mortars and rockets because you can’t predict them. That is not war. It is just a foreign presence hiding out behind walls and never allowing the locals on base as contractor workers. Try as I have in reading your posts, the logic of what really happens in the war of my experience, is just not there. War is one of the most imperfect human endeavors to try to accomplish because there is so much that unpredictable. That is its nature, for each side to be as unpredictable as possible in engaging one another. No matter how much training and experience you carry onto the battlefield, when the hidden enemy has you in their sights…Purple Hearts happen. Just my humble experience and opinion.
Also Smitty, our church just a month ago buried with full military honors a young soldier, the first from our local high school and church to be killed in Afghanistan. He and three others were waiting at a bus stop on Kandahar Airfield. Two random rockets came in and it was a direct hit, killing all four. No one did anything wrong. No one could have predicted it. It was a terrible action of the war. He and the others did nothing wrong, stupid nor fail to take appropriate precautions, given where they were and what they were doing. Among his other awards, he received the Purple Heart. That small piece of purple cloth is small comfort to his own family or our church family. We would gladly give it back to have Robbie Ellis at home with us again.
i never said casualties were unavoidable. i never said that the fuck ups were committed by those who are injured or even on the battle field. i specifically said iraq and afganistan, where we do not face conventional warfare or major force on force actions. i made no reference to vietnam, and made sure my statements were clearly addressed to the current engagements. ive stated that many of the fuck ups that cause these injuries and deaths are by those far removed from the battle field. it is clear people want to engage me with their emotions and try to tug heart strings to plead their disagreements with me, but i dont play the emotion games. i walked away from this debate, because it is nothing more than people getting their feelings hurt by my statements, i responded directly to Hondo’s question, and ask only that if someone wishes to question what i have said, to actually pay attention to what i actually said instead of trying to make it into something else.

This sort of crime should have serious penalties. I hope that the local law enforcement is notified as well as the US Army. Any and all of his military benefits should be revoked. His current employer should be notified as well as the person he assaulted. I’m sure he has used fake resumes throughout his life without being questioned or just created his own documents to gain employment. Makes me sick. My nephew is a Ranger and never boasts or flaunts his status… He doesn’t need to.

Since you have all the answers, I suggest you go back in harm’s way to save lives. Based on your logic and you “perfect knowlege” of unconventional warfare, your serving in Afghanistan would result in zero lives lost. I’m not a vet. I willfully acknowledge it. Having said that, I’ve never met any SF type who was openly aggressive. Having had family that WERE SF types, they were, literally, the nicest people one could ever hope to encounter, until such time as they could no longer afford to be. They were the kind who laughed loudest, loved most, and were all extraordinarily intelligent. I find a lot of posers tend to be dense, stupid, overly aggressive, and outright violent. Perhaps they’re playing to the Hollywood archetype, and not reality?

I unfortunately dated this guy for a short period. Luckily, I realized his bs for what it was and started questioning him, extensively. Needless to say, we are no longer together. He was definitely not “awarded” custody… The boys were so out of control and disrespectful that mom had no choice but to either give him custody of the three boys or have them put into juvenile detention..
