SPC Adam Spotanski awards himself Purple Heart for being a klutz

| June 21, 2012

This is Adam Spotanski, he really was a paratrooper in the 2/503rd of the Herd (the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team), he really was injured in the war in Afghanistan, his records show a Purple Heart, but they don’t show a Bronze Star Medal;

There are also questions about how he was awarded the Purple Heart. Here’s the story he tells in public;

But, here’s what folks who were there say;

On August 22, 2007 in Aranas, Nuristan, Afghanistan; Our base was attacked by 70-100 enemy fighters. We had the advantage of being on the side of a mountain and after taking half of our base in 10 minutes we 20 soldiers fought for 3 violent hours to a a decisive American victory. At the time PFC Adam Spotanski was in the military and assigned to us in C Co. 2/503d, 173d ABCT. During the fire fight, at the plea of another soldier for help, PFC Spotanski cowered in a corner. Later, after the firing had stopped, we were at the highest post on our little COP. It had been at least 30 minutes-an hour of silence and I had PFC Spotanski and another soldier, SPC Langevin clear debris off the top of the 12 foot post. After turning my head PFC Spotanski “fell” off of the post and was impaled in his rear end by a stake that was used to support a HESCO barrier. He was evacuated and later discharged for nerve damage.

Now, after he was evacuated and re-stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center he complained about never receiving a Purple Heart and later was forced into silence by our chain of command because he was acting inappropriately. He was awarded the Purple Heart by Water Reed but it was later revoked because of the sworn statements provided.

I have those sworn statements from Spotanski’s leadership, but I’m not posting them because they contain PII, so I tend to believe this account rather than Spotanski’s. According to the statements, there was no incoming enemy fire when he fell from the tower, so he doesn’t qualify for the Purple Heart, but he made the POGs award him one at Water Reed once he got out of earshot of his unit.

The author of the above letter continues;

Four years later Spotanski contacted Operation First Response feeding them a false story about his “heroics” and even standing up in front of crowds speaking for the organization. In the picture attached you will notice that Spotanski is wearing the following awards that were not awarded to him”;
The Bronze Star Medal (possibly with “V” device)
The Purple Heart
The Army Commendation medal with V device

[Spotanski] also claimed before our deployment that he had Lupus. We later found out that he was a compulsive liar.

The reason I am bringing this up is because I have recently found a video that was posted by Operation First Responder with him speaking for the organization. It has since been taken down.

This story is is highly infuriating to a number of soldiers. 2/503d became the one if not the most valorous unit in the Army [during] the OEF VIII deployment over 15 months between May 2007- August 2008.

Some of the soldiers who were at this fight received the following awards;
LT Matthew Ferrara (deceased) The Silver Star
SPC Sean Langevin (deceased) The Bronze Star with V device
ME SSG Jason Baldwin the Silver Star
Former SGT Kyle White- Arcom with V
Former SPC Kain Schilling- Purple Heart recipient Medically discharged for wounds sustained in a seperate engagement

So, even though Spotanski had an honorable career in the Army as a paratrooper, he felt it wasn’t enough and even scammed Walter Reed clerks into embellishing his records – so he awards himself a Purple Heart for being a klutz. And he lied to his parents who put this message in the local paper and arranged for the local Patriot Guard Riders to escort him home when he arrived from Walter Reed;

What is it with New Jersey?

46. I was there and I’m the one who wrote to this site. I was also standing on the same 12 ft tower this idiot “fell’ off of. Story is legit and this dude is a POS.

JP

46… So did most of us. Without claiming shit that never happened. Fuck off, you obviously never served.

ScalpelShepherd

I was there: 2005-2006

46… How is cowering in a corner fighting for our country? Just sayin.

I don’t know about the other stuff but he was awarded the purple heart in Bagram well before he arrived at Walter Reed. I know this to be true because I was in the hospital room in Bagram

Anonymous

We rescinded the purple heart orders.

NHSparky,
I was wondering about the NH part of your moniker until I backtracked a month back and saw a comment about Fudgie the Whale. It made me spray drink all over my computer screen. Born and raised in NH and my first unit was C Co. 3/172 in ’94-’95 when it was at the Lebanon Armory. I went active after that. My comment on this thread is that I sat as a leg while a SOT-A at Panzer Kaserne for over 6 months (Oct 2003-April 2004) until I finally got sent to school. I had PCS’d from another unit in Germany without getting all the joy of going back to Benning for school first. Wearing a maroon beret and having an Airbornbe tab without the jump wings is possible but friggin’ embarassing. Even after getting my wings, I was still made fun of.

Husker4Life

He does have a crazy ex wife though…

I’ve seen dozens of these stories, usually old Vietnam era “vets” taking advantage of faded memory and some information gleaned from war books. Or current 42As and other combat paper pushers claiming more than their share of glory… But to see this coming out of my own Rock BN, and my first deployment with them, makes me a little sick. I guess no unit, no matter how badass, is immune from these guys marring everyone.

Side question, was this all at Ranch House?

Green Thumb

Ha, ha.

Noting else to say.

Just an Old Dog

Funny Story about Airborne and Legs… I was a Marine who went Through Army BNCOC at Ft Sill in late 1984. We had an Instructor there who had wings and enjoyed teasing non-airborne types (Since it was Artillery BNCOC that was 99% of the class). He was talking some smack one day about him being airborne and Marines all being legs… I just looked at him and said “that’s okay, you gotta hit the ground sometime, then your ass is mine” Totally worth the demerits.

I was also with the author of this artical during this firefight and all he said is true. Adam refused to help sean and stayed inside while sean was ontop of the post all alone defending it. Now he said sean saved his life well i guess he did.. but sean had no choice adam refused direct orders to get up and help. Sean was killed NOV 9 2007 and for him to even speak his name makes me sick and props to JB for bringing this out so their is no denying.FUCK YOU SPOT

#60 yes it was at Ranch House

he always did have a problem with the truth and thinking too highly of himself.

I served in the 4/25th ABCT. It’s not far fetched at all to have legs with their Maroon Beret and Airborne tabs; there is an expectation that at some point they will attend Airborne School when ever the unit has the ability to send them. Granted the vast majority of people sent to an Airborne unit are already qualified to jump, it’s more or less about the Army putting warm bodies in slots to make the unit deployable nowadays. I have seen guys go their whole career though in the 4/25th without ever going to Airborne School but that was few and far between.

OEF XII-XIII

A Proud Infidel

That turd reminds me of a “Broke-Dick” we had in my section when I was in Afghanistan! Our poser claimed to have been an ex-USMC Recon while he rode Medical Profiles like a Champion Jockey rides a horse, went home after only four months (Medical, probably terminal sand-in-the-clam) and claimed that he got shot over there. We’re National Guard, and we shot his story to SHIT once we got home and found out what he was saying around town!!

11BScottie

He also shouldnt rate the cib. There is a paragraph that mentions something about acting to army values and no cowardice or something to the like in the award criteria.

The dude was awarded a PH it was never revoked.

He’s also missing some awards NATO ISAF and I’m pretty sure there are more gimmies from Afghanistan.

Green Thumb

Turd.

LT Rasmussen, USN

Capt. Matt Ferrara was a high school classmate of mine. This dirtbag’s lies dishonor real heroes like Matt. Thanks for helping expose him.

Jason

Your welcome

The dude still earned a PH which is more than I can say for most of you POS. I was at Ranch House that day and we were taking fire when he fell. Adam was not well liked in our company but our CO signed off on it. It was never revoked I was our company S1.

Jason

How were you the company S1 and at Ranch House?

Jason

No such thing AS A COMPANY S1. The ops guy was AASS and if you were the other ops guy (Nantuckal) then you werent at the ranch house. So pretty sure you should shut your mouth.

Green Thumb

@73.

Obviously you were a Company Grade Officer.

Pull the info; I bet you know how.

And you liked this clown why?

And as the S-1, what in the hell were you doing in contact?

Fair question.

Green Thumb

@73.

AG?

Chosen Few III PLT OEF VIII

Spot was a hot head in garrison … a coward in the Kunar. Long live the Immortals.

Andy

@73, a company S1? what the fuck is that? I’ve been in Infantry units from Ft Carson, to Korea, to Ft Hood, to Ft Stupid and Germany and we never had a “company S1” we had the company jerk, I mean, company clerk, and the company training NCO. They were the ones that shoveled all the paper work going into and out of the Co and 1SGs office. But we never called them S1. That was reserved for the jerkoffs sitting in the BN S1 office surfing the web all day.

Don H

@73. You’re lying. The Purple Heart can only be awarded by hospital commanders or the chain of command (O-6 and above) AFTER the soldier has been treated by a Medical Department Officer. Company Commander would have had nothing to approve, because he can’t submit the award, much less approve it. And if it was revoked after he left theater, how the hell would you, most likely an E-4, know if it was revoked or not. You were at neither the issuing nor the revoking headquarters, so nobody would have sent you a copy of either set of orders.

Go ahead, challange me. I dare you. I was the Deputy Commander of a Combat Support Hospital in Iraq in 2007-2008 at the Camp Bucca theater internment facility. 15 rocket attacks in 15 months, and prison riots 2-3 nights a week.

Don H Wuss

@78 CAMP BUCCA seriously! That place was a joke. You where a giant POG. Rocket attacks at Bucca where nothing. I was patrolling route michigan in 2004-2005 before I went to Italy and deployed to the Pech. Your a joke Don. Your 15 rocket attacks wow. You must be so tough you probably got a CAB for it.

drc

One of the guys mentioned in this got the Medal of Honor today. Sucks to be Spot.

So was he LRP’s Sniper or not?
