OWS no longer in vogue
Well, the girlfriend and I decided to make a trip to NYC over the weekend for several reasons, by the end of which we both agreed the main point was reinforcement of our correct opinion that there are just too damned many people shoved onto that little island called Manhattan.
However, yesterday, as we were walking around the WTC site (see below) and I was remarking on a lot of the changes that have come about since my first post-9/11 trip to Ground Zero in early 2003, when rubble was still being removed, I noted that we were in fact close to Zuccotti Park. We made the two-block walk over, and the results are as you see below…
WTC towers under construction. Suck it, terrorists.
I only got a couple of shots at Zuccotti Park, but a couple of the usual cast of characters were there you’ve seen in other posts, most notably the Chinese gentleman protesting their occupation of Tibet. One protestor did catch my eye:
Ho…ho…hum.
And the most telling is a picture of the park in its entirely, taken at just past 10 AM:
Yup, you’re seeing it right. More workers on a Saturday stringing Christmas lights, and a shitload more cops than protestors. Ever since Bloomy grew a sack and told them they could only stay during daylight hours, apparently that’s not enough, or they just can’t drag their drug-addled asses out of bed before noon. Maybe it was the weather. Nah, it was in the 60’s this weekend. Maybe it was the lice, TB, and other nasty social diseases. Nah, can’t be that–they deal with those on a daily basis in their existence anyway. Pretty telling that when the focus isn’t all on them, they can’t be bothered. Only when they’re acting out like spoiled little children are they anywhere close to their “potential”.
99 percent my dyin ass.

Good one, Sparky! *thumbs up*
Pretty cabbage flowers. Those must be new…
They looked pretty new. I wanted to take another look at what they’re doing construction-wise, but the barriers are pretty high and even had I been able to get tickets/passes for the tour, you’re not allowed to take video or pictures anyway.
Two things between 2003 and now struck me: first was the lack of memorial items left on the fence at St. Paul’s like there was the first time I was there. The second was a picture I had from the first time on the fence around Ground Zero saying, “NEVER FORGET.” The sign is long gone.
Guess they forgot.
However, most of the buildings that were damaged, especially along Liberty and Vesey (sp?) streets have been patched up and reopened. If you weren’t aware of 9/11, you’d think it was just another massive construction project going on down in Lower Manhattan, except for the virtual army of NYPD and security.
“…there are just too damned many people shoved onto that little island called Manhattan.”
Rock n Roll great Johnny Rivers had a line in a song about a “Concrete Anthill”. Fits my vision of these cities to a T.
This is one of those mixed emotion things, really. While we don’t want anyone to ever forget, getting on with our lives, living well in spite of it all, and rebuilding around the scars is the best revenge.
Thanks for sharing your impressions of it today. The proximity of the extremes of behavior between those who served honorably at Ground Zero and the nuts/idiots of OWS is stunning.
Pretty much. Times Square on Black Friday…and who the HELL pays $22 for a corned beef sandwich (fries not included)? The g/f and I took one look at that menu and headed down the street for a $3 slice of pepperoni heaven.
Damn Sparky, $22 and still no fries?!?!?!? Reminds me of one trip I made to Chicago for work … needed a quick bite to eat, so went to the restaurant in the hotel. $27 for a Cheeseburger but at least I got fries. I was on per diem so it was covered but I needed a few $5 beers later on just to get rid of the damn burger.
Non-Happy Hour beers were going as high as $7.50 in midtown bars, as low as $3 during depending on which one they were pushing, but even that’s a lot more than the $1.50 pints I usually fork over at home. And I’m glad I don’t smoke…those were going for $12-14 a pack in the bodegas. Thank Bloomy for that too.
No-Balls Bloomberg is still a eunich. The only reason that the place was cleaned up was for the Christmas crowds. It doesn’t matter that Z Park is not outside Macy’s windows. What matters is the press reporting on the now-closed sewer during the big, big, really big shew! (That’s Ed Sullivan, youngsters.)
real heroes there.
