Gordon Duff the military expert

| May 3, 2010

We’ve spent a little bit of time highlighting the writings of Gordon Duff, the senior editor of Veterans Today, the special place on the internet for crackpots and crazies to exchange their irrational conspiracy theories. For example, a month ago, I wrote about Duff’s theory that all of the Vietnam POWs were given amnesty for the time they were imprisoned just to protect John McCain.

Before that, TSO wrote about Duff‘s interpretation of the James O’Keefe’s “black bag operation”. Last September, I wrote about Duff’s definition of military service. Last month, I wrote about his blaming Mossad for the attack on the Moscow subway system.

His bio says;

Gordon Duff is a Marine Vietnam veteran, grunt and 100% disabled vet. He has been a featured commentator on TV and radio including Al Jazeera and his articles have been carried by news services around the world. He has been a UN Diplomat, defense contractor and is a widely published expert on military and defense issues.

Yes, he was a Marine Vietnam veteran. His service record;

duff-assignments

6 months in training, 4 months as a grunt, and 8 months as an S-3 clerk. That’s all it takes to be some kind of national security expert. That’s the kind of expertise that Al Jazeera is looking for in their “featured commentators”.

That 100% disablity thing – I’m pretty sure that didn’t happen during his military service. Here’s his awards – no Purple Heart.

duff-foia

He spent 15 days outprocessing at Camp Pendleton when he returned from Vietnam – it doesn’t seem if he had any injuries they would have rushed him out. So, I’m pretty sure his “100% disability” is not related to his brief time in the Marines – even though he makes it sound like that in the bio.

I’m not in the habit of characterizing veterans’ service, but Duff has used his minimal time to justify his characterization of other veterans’ service records, I guess I’m the only who will put Duff’s service in perspective – I had socks that lasted longer in the Army. Maybe Al Jazeera will want to interview them.

Jesus–I’ve got more time on the shitter at test depth while the boat is answering a backing bell than this clown had in the Corps.

Clearly the Mossad has falsified this brave man’s service record to smear his credentials. In fact, I think a Mossad operative on a motorcycle tried to run him off the road, spinning him into the median and cussing at his bumper stickers just last week. True story.

Old Tanker

Is it normal for the block that says

“Transcript of court martial trail”

to say “not in file”? Why wouldn’t it say N/A? He was only in 18 months? I didn’t know Marine enlistments were that short.

Since I have been driving a car since 1985, I guess I am some sort of expert in transportation issues. I also have a cat, so now I am an expert in animal psychology. I have used a calculator, thus I am an expert in all things computing. Just using Duff logic.

Patrick Sperry

This sure makes you wonder… The only thing that looks authentic to me is that I think the typewriter used was the same old piece of junk that my birth certificate was made with.

Jack

I’m no fan of Duff or his lefist blatherings, and while I respect him for serving, as I respect all who served honorably, his service record does not inspire awe at his combat exploits. That being said, John, I have to take exception to you claiming that you are not in the habit of characterizing veterans’ service. You have on many, many occasions characterized the service of several members of IVAW and other anti-military outfits by making sarcastic cracks about them only being in country for a brief time or dispatching trucks at the TMP, and so on. If some vet is claiming combat time when they didn’t fire a shot, game on. But by and large, we don’t pick our tours of duty and we don’t control if we see combat. If a PAC clerk is spouting off about infantry tactics, I will consider the source and advise that guy to stay in his lane. If a guy spent his tour on the FOB riding a desk, I will still grant him the respect his service deserves. I’m not going to mock somebody for where the Army sent them. I’m not going to scoff at someone for not having a non combat arms MOS. Most of us here in Iraq today will not be getting into firefights. Thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of those who fought the hard fight in years past, my frequent trips up Route Irish are fairly safe. I would certainly take exception to anyone, anywhere, who decided to say that my lack of trigger time here somehow disqualifies me from having opinions about the conflict. I’m on a short National Guard tour; so I should only be in country a total of about 9 months, and I will again take exception to anyone who wants to claim I lack credibility due to my tour length. Look, most of IVAW, as you well know, are posers with mediocre (at best) service records. If someone misrepresents their service in some way, then sure, set the facts straight. But it has always been a sore spot… Read more »

Old Tanker

John,
Thanks for the info…

Jack,
It has been my experience that the guys at this blog only go on about someones service when they either a) overstate it or b) use it to proclaim themselves expert in all things military ie. our esteemed Mr. Duff

UnicornDick

Not defending Duff here but you can certainly be 100% disabled without a corresponding Purple Heart. I could go break my spine during PT and be disabled… as long as it was in the line of duty.

Ray

Sparkey, how about a spew alert? You just made me shoot coffee out of my nose.

Jack, I have been reading this blog for quite a while, and have only seen Jonn go after posers and those that overstate their expertise. I served as a Sonar Tech on Submarines. My opinion on Army tactics is no more informed than any other schlub who has read “Rainbow Six”, and “House to House”. It would be inappropriate for me to bloviate about those issues in Public, and if I do, it’s proper for Jonn to hold my feet to the fire and point out the fact that, I have no f-ing clue what the Hell I’m talking about. I’ve noticed that, here on TAH, people claiming to be experts on the situation in Afganastan after spending a week there, spent entirely on a FOB, will find themselves reminded of their lack of credibility. Folks that speak of situations they have real experience with will be respected and their opinions will be weighed differently.

Madconductor

Jack, while you are correct in matters of fairness, I haven’t seen this blog
treat anyone “unfairly” that didn’t deserve it. My opinion. That the
IVAW are considered posers is understandable – they are. That John takes
them to task for it is fair. As others have also opined, the IVAW bloviates smoke
and John calls em on it. Game on.
Your post makes me think that you would be far more analytical and pointed
about those things you know and those you don’t. We are not seeing that from IVAW
and I appreciate John cutting them for it. I don’t have the time.

Btw, my son is over there – and bored to death on his third tour flying UAV’s near
Baghdad. So I understand your concern about engaging. But the upside is
that you are safer. And that a good thing. Good luck to you and thank you
for your service.

Sean

Gordo, is really a fucking deluded moonbat. Now he claims the Times Square failed VBIED was Mossad. I guess he became a Secret Squirrel Ninja while typing up those VD status reports.

Ray

I somehow doubt that a Mossad built bomb would have failed to go “boom”.

Old Tanker

Ray….

That was just to throw us off the trail you see….the next one will be built the same way but will have 10 times the yeild of 3 propane tanks….you just watch. Shit, I’ve said to much already….. 🙂

Ray

Gotcha OT. Wink of the eye, nudge nudge.

justplainjason

Jack I think the specific person who is regularily given shit about their knowledge of a 2404 and a 5988 is John Soltz. He throws around his four months in Iraq in charge of a motorpool like he was secretsapperspecialrangerseal. Lets not even start to talk about Mathis’s six days of rape and torture in Afghanistan.

defendUSA

Jack-
Let me just say that your comment was well thought out…and I would have to agree with the regulars…

Jonn may use harsh words and some of us beat down the trolls quite fervently but as others have said…he waits for all the facts and the drops the boom. Should he be incorrect, he will apologize.

it seems you agree that sitting at a desk vs. being on patrols and having to be in trigger mode or hypersensitive to your surroundings gives you a bit more credibility over the REMF for lack of a better term, alas, it is *not* the fault of a soldier as to orders. But it is a fault if they choose not to stay in their lane.

And it does seem to me that those who do not seek aggrandizement will tell you straight out that the job they did in Iraq or A’stan was not what some have had to face.

These chest-puffing pukes from IVAW or the phonies that Jonn outs are nothing like the combat vets I know. Nothing.

I never saw combat, but I would never lie so that it would seem that my mission to support the troops is more important than they are. But I take issue with liars and chest-puffers and they do not deserve my respect. Chest puffers and buddy fuckers suck any way you slice them.

Jack

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to reply sooner, the server was down.

I agree, 100%, that a person’s experience goes directly to their credibility. And I have zero tolerance of anyone who lies about their past (or nonexistent) military service. If I am claiming to be a subject matter expert on hand to hand combat based on one 8 hour combatives course, then sure, I have officially attained poser status and deserve whatever verbal beatdown comes my way.

Here’s the thing, though: you don’t have to qualify to have opinions. A lack of experience in a certain matter might mean your opinion is worthless to me, but you won’t get mocked by me for having it. I might, however, mock your opinion, especially if it is particularly ridiculous.

A guy who spent his tour on a FOB or in Kuwait, certainly isn’t going to have first hand knowledge of what the combat in Fallujah was like. That doesn’t mean he can’t have an opinion about the war itself, anymore than me not being in Congress doesn’t prevent me from having opinions about the government.

Saying, “What does he know? He never did (fill in the blank)” cuts both ways. Those of you who have never been to Iraq, should you not be allowed hold forth your opinions about it? Should you be mocked for not being in Iraq? Of course not. It is when you hold yourself up as an Iraq expert based on experience that doesn’t exist that you become fair game.

And for what it’s worth, Iv’e been a fairly regular reader since sometime in the spring of 2007, as best as I can figure. I’ve only commented a handful of times, though. I think this is comment #5, maybe.

Ray

Jack,
Strangely, as opinionated as I am, you will find I am pretty silent on ground warfare or the conduct of the wars, with the exception of the occasional smart assed comment. I don’t know shit about it, so I try not to prove my ignorance. 🙂

Thanks for being over there, and stay safe.

USMC Steve

Jack, let me add in what I have learned over the years, 20 of them in the Marine Corps. You have the right to have an INFORMED opinion, but if someone thinks they can just talk out of their ass, no they cannot, not and inflict it on me. I won’t stand for it. While there are no quotas on stupidity in this country, there ought to be. This guy is an embarrassment to my Corps, as much so as that Murtha asshole was.

@ Ray/Sean:
I’m not a sapper, I have 0 days military service, but I damn sure guarantee you that I can make a bomb out of what was in the back of that truck that would go boom. Let the moron mooslimes keep blowing themselves up while failing miserably to do any damage or kill anyone on US soil.

UK submariner

Greetings from over the pond. Discovered this site when trying to find dirt (ie the truth) about MR Gordon Duff. Was immediately offended by this serial pricks pro-Adolf Hitler stance that I followed as a link to a discussion on, of all things, a Scottish football forum. His lies about Winston Churchill are particularly galling to a UK citizen, especially, and this is what winds me up as a Scot, when he has the temerity to describe himself as a ‘Scot’ in some of his witterings, presumably due to his surname (‘duff’ is actually Royal Navy slang for dessert- which sums this pudding head up very well actually) I’m up for anything that reveals this odious w*nker to be the liar and fraudster he is. I have spent more time ironing (AS A SUBMARINER!) than this tool served in the USMC.

Jim Dean

You fellas have quite a circle jerk going here. Gordon was a line grunt with I/26 up in the Danang area where they were much abuse with constant patrolling. He pull 300 combat patrols, 200 night ambushes, and 5 amphibious assaults. His last few months the pulled him out of the line and he was an inside the wire 50cal sniper, killing VC mortar teams who though 1000 yards was a safe distance.

He went home to get an electrical engineering degree, two masters in history and one Phd. He later became one of the most famous intelligence officers the country has ever
produced.

Like most Nam Vets, Agent Orange and PTSD disabilities did not start coming til the ’90s. You have some very stupid people here.

He is world renowned counter terrorism expert, having trained countries entire setups from scratch. He is the personal national security advisor to the president of Nigeria, and a UN Ambassador and Special delegate, a lifetime appointment, refugee and development work he did in Africa for many years.

VeteransToday has the former head of Pakistan’s ISI, their CIA, Nakita Krushchev’s grandson, the Serbian Counter Intel school crowd, past heads of MI5 and MI6…and all the top Intel heads in the US…and veterans from 28 countries involved.

He began online work with AOL in 1993 with 300 baud modems and half an hour to get a connection, running the military board and then the Nam one with Cols. David Hackworth and Ted Guy, later moving to the History Channel online blogs. Along the way he was a Veterans service officers for 18 years, assisting hundreds of Nam vets getting their disabilities. His took 12 years.

Gordon will do more for his country in a week that most of you will do in your lifetimes.

Reading this blog his reaffirmed my belief that there really are a lot of people too dumb to even be allowed to breathe.

Doc Bailey

@25: You’re so full of shit it’s not even funny. And please tell me how are his insane rants about how the JOOOS are doing every bad thing in the world, in anyway a GOOD THING

Old Trooper

So, mr. Dean; where did you get your facts about Gordy from; Gordy himself?

Duff is an anti-semitic asshole with delusions that there are conspiracies around every corner that involve the Joooos and Dick Cheney. He makes wild statements of fact without putting any evidence, or links to evidence, in his statements to support all his bullshit. The one time he did put in a link, it went to another conspiracy blog story that linked back to him. Yeah, that’s evidence for sure. Before you get your skivvies all twisted up any tighter, please research Gordy a little more before defending him and calling us dumb, because all it does is reflect on you, especially when your own website claims to be patriotic and in support of the troops, yet you claim that someone that disses the troops all the time “will do more for his country in a week than most of you will do in your lifetimes.”

2-17 AirCav

Dean knows what Duff is, if it’s THAT Jim Dean, managing editor and columnist for Veterans Today. Dean’s bio at the rag is a laugh riot. The bio mentions the military service of his ancestors, uncles, and even his mother’s first husband. There is one glaring omission, however: HIS service. What’s more, Duff’s antics are doubtless admired by Dean who, in a recent piece wonders why so many Americans spy for Israel (As Elmer Fudd would say, “Oh, dwat dem Jooos!”) Well, here’s something to piss both of them off, two Americans who did a tad more in Nam than play cards: Sergeant John Levitow, USAF, and Captain Jack Jacobs, US Army. They both earned the Medal of Honor. And they were both Jooooos.

Doc Bailey

In all seriousness, is there anything in VT that is NOT antisemitic, and furthermore utterly batshit crazy?

UpNorth

“You’re right about people who are too stupid to be able to breathe. How do you do it”? There went the coffee, again.
Reading the post of Jim Dean, the grammar and such, it would seem that he’s either a cut & paste commando, or he has trouble with the English language.
And, Gordo is the “personal national security advisor to the president of Nigeria”? Wow, that explains a lot. And not much of it good.
Trolling at Vet’s Today, I found this gem from the mind(?) of Gordo. “Journalists all get leaks, and frankly, we don’t print most of them.”, in regards to Wikileaks. Now, I doubt there are many “journalists” left, regardless, but for Gordo to claim to be one flies in the face of sanity. He’s about as much of a “journalist” as FatEd Schultz, or Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews or Larry O’Donnell. And, predictably, during his rant on Wikileaks, it turns out that it was all the doing of the Jooooooooos.

2-17 AirCav

Yes, Doc, in one of my few visits to that sewer, I recall seeing an add that had nothing whatsoever to do with Israel, American Jews, or alternatives to Kosher hot dogs. I don’t recall what the ad was for but I remember saying, “Lookie there! No conspiracy, pro-Palestinian, anti-Isreal stuff!” But maybe I am confusing it with another site.

UpNorth

Today’s Vets Today web page includes such gems as “We are all Palestinians”, “We’ll Occupy, the 99% is Pissed” and “Greedy Bastards, Dylan Ratigan Nails American Leadership Corruption” by, guess who, Jim W. Dean.
Seems Vets Today really loves them Pally’s and Occutards. And MSNBC, but I repeat the Occutard theme.

2-17 AirCav

Well, UpNorth, you probably ruined a perfectly good Sunday morning visiting that propoganda trash heap. On the other hand, you do have a keen sense of humor, so maybe you just had a good laugh.

Doc Bailey

When someone says they’re a Veteran, you assume, (there’s that word again) that they have had a sound grounding in reality. You have to, to get anything done in the military. But while duff is a Veteran, and that status is deserved, despite being a TOCroach.

However being a Vet is only half the story, its what you do afterwards that matters. In every way imaginable, he is a mega douche, that has somehow managed to both piss on the name of veteran, and also most American ideals. Worse when he spouts batshit crazy stuff people get their negative stereotypes of all vets being PTSD filled rabid maniacs. Really he’d be doing everyone a favor if he just shut the fuck up.

JAGC

I would like to posit a theory from an unnamed source about Gordon Duff… Duff is in fact an agent of the Mossad. His mission is to craft as many outlandish, anti-Semitic, historic blood libelous, and downright stupid self-sourced “articles” about the evil Jooos as possible, under the guise of being a decorated non-combat, combat veteran. The result is that his followers start parroting this ridiculousness with a similar fury and naive passion of the Ron Paul people, and soon you get all these weirdos out of the woodwork who consequently make anti-Semites look so downright retarded that they’ll never be taken seriously.

Perhaps this could be Duff’s next article? He can use my random comment on this blog as a “source.”

UpNorth

AirCav, it was mostly a waste. I had an almost overwhelming urge to wash and air-dry my brain after visiting there.
