Douche bag being douchie

| November 19, 2012

Meet Lindsey Stone, a self-proclaimed douchebag. See that picture? She thinks it’s hilarious because she’s being her douche bag self. Of course, she’s at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers, and she thinks that doing what she’s doing is like smoking under a “No Smoking” sign.

This is just us, being the douchebags that we are, challenging authority in general

Whose authority, Lindsey? The folks enforcing the “Silence & Respect” are soldiers. The Tomb is property of the Army, more accurately, the soldiers who are interred there. Of course, the sign is just supposed to remind you of your own proper conduct, the proper conduct you were not taught by your parents, apparently. There is no authority to challenge, really, well, except your upbringing, which by the looks of things is lacking.

Of course, the reason that you think this is funny is because popular culture tells you that the more outrageous you are, the more popular you’ll be. I believe your generation calls it “pushing the envelope” or something. Congratulations, Lindsey, you found the outer edge of the envelope, outside the limits of what we as a civilized society will accept.

Of course, Lindsey’s friends told her that she was wrong, but she left the picture up on her Facebook thingie – right through Veterans’ Day, so she wasn’t chastised quite enough to make her feel any measure of shame for her behavior.

Thanks to JP for the link.

Edit by NSOM:

Pending a follow up from Jonn, do not post home contact information for anyone you think may be Stone. It may not actually be her, innocent third parties may live there and just because YOU’RE mentally stable doesn’t mean the next person to read her home address is too. Her workplace and work number are fine, home addresses are not.

As the saying goes, Respect is Earned, and every single Service Member that is a permanent resident of Arrlington has without a doubt earned that Respect. Arrlington is not a playground, not a place to look for Photo OPs, not a platform to demonstrate your political views, social problems, or failed up-bringing.

The Residents of Arrlington have given more than Ms. Stone can comprehend, she will feel some pressure, humility and embarassment, maybe even hurt her in the purse, but it is pale in comparrison to the sacrifice of those that she thought she could use for her idea of `Pushing the Envelope ´.

You Reap what you Sow, enjoy the fruits of your mistakes.
Somehow I think this will be long lasting.

LIFE- Living Independently Forever
On Nov. 19 at approximately 6 p.m., we became aware that one of our employees had posted an offensive, inappropriate photograph on her personal Facebook page. The photo was taken at a national historic site in October by a fellow employee during a trip to Washington, D.C. attended by 40 residents and eight staff. The photo has since been removed from Facebook, and both employees have been placed on unpaid leave pending the results of an internal investigation.

This photograph in no way reflects the opinions or values of the LIFE organization, which holds our nation’s veterans in the highest regard. We are proud to have veterans serving on our staff and board of trustees, and we value their service. The men and women who have selflessly fought and sacrificed their lives to protect the rights and lives of Americans deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. We are acutely aware that this photo has done a disservice to veterans and we are deeply saddened that it was taken and shared in a public medium.

How proud must those fallen soldiers be, of those that try to ruin the life of two people who did nothing else then make a mistake. Two, who believed that they lived in the land of the free. There is still so much hate in this country, that if I, were one of those fallen soldiers, would be ashamed of you all.

Strange how the comments at Life went from almost 10,000 to 258 instantaneously.

What a poor excuse of an American. There is an extent to what’s really a funny joke or what’s really disrespectful. You may say you meant no disrespect but those are obviously lies. Everything must be a joke to you, huh? How old is this woman anyway? To be acting like that. What makes you believe that you deserve freedom that many had died for? Absolutely an awful human being and I am sure your family is proud to have raised such a “lady”. You are a disgrace. Along with the person who had the audacity of taking that photo. Photographer is also at fault.

Somali Vet-Spc. Hall

307 @anon. It was not about ruining their lives, it was about honoring our fallen. She posted this right before Veterans Day. Had you seen the original posts, (that have now been removed), you would have seen many of her friends asking her to remove it because it was offensive and disrespectful! She refused. She got herself fired, not us. We only exercised our right of free speech just like her! As for my part in her removal, I will loose no sleep over it!

Twist

@anon, Land of the free does not mean free from consequences for your bone headed actions.

Looks like it’s picking up steam… CBS Boston just picked up on the story:

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2012/11/20/facebook-photo-of-plymouth-woman-at-tomb-of-the-unknowns-sparks-outrage/

CBSenior

@309; People do not need an excuse to be a bad or good American, we have the freedom because we are Americans. Given to us the most by who she disrepscted the most, but that is the beauty of this country, and the sadness of her actions. All of those Heros would have just told her to shut the Fuck up and kick her ass, and that is the only way she would have the guts do those actions in such a place. Where she thought they could not fight back.

@310 Punishment would have been good, and I am all for punishing her, but getting her fired looks more like revenge. I live in her same home town, I do not know her though, but she was going to know me. Now what is the point, she will never respect anyone of this community because she was told and taught that she has those freedoms becasue of the military, who just bullied her and her employer into the loss of her job. Do you know if she is a single mother who is the sole source of food for young kids, or helps provide for an ederly parent. She was not the enemy, just a simple American Jerk.

Hondo

anon (307): Don’t you feel a touch hypocritical posting that vom Deutchland? Wie ist das Wetter in Bremen heute?

The two twits involved were completely free to engage in their idiotic behavior. They indeed exercised their Constitutional right to act like fools. No governmental agency interfered with them, nor did any level of government punish them. That is what the First Amendment forbids: unnecessary governmental interference with freedom of expression.

That’s unlike Germany, where speech and expression can indeed be restricted by the government. Just try walking around in Bremen wearing a swastika armband or handing out copies of Mein Kampf on the streets.

However, private industry is not regulated by the First Amendment. These two idiots just found that out the hard way.

Moreover, freedom of speech also applies equally to those who are outraged by these two idiots’ behavior. So how about you can that “I’m so ashamed” false argument. It wasn’t the government that slam-dunked these two idiots; it was other Americans, exercising their own Constitutional right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech works both ways; it applies equally to ideas with which you agree and ideas with which you don’t.

Finally, freedom of expression does not imply freedom from any consequences of speaking one’s mind or acting like an idiot. If your boss is upset by what you said or did away from work, you can indeed get fired for what you said or did. That is not a First Amendment issue; it’s the predictable result of being stupid.

Perhaps you’ve simply been in Germany too long to remember what the Constitution does – and does not – permit and prohibit.

“How proud must those fallen soldiers be…” You could have stopped right there, girlie. Doubtless, the Fallen and their families are proud that their brothers and sisters speak for those whose voices are now silent. No one has suggested she does not have the legal right to her irreverent and callous tomfoolery. That right was paid for and is sustained by those for whom she showed abject disdain. But, as others here have said, that freedom of expression business runs two ways. She now reaps the lawful consequences of her actions.

Life is not happy that this was share with the media. DUH, who then should it have been shared with LIFE? Unpaid leave, internal investigation, and what will the net result be? A compnay sponsored trip … the result should be an immediate dismisal of the employees. Period!

Hondo

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.): my guess is that the unpaid leave/internal investigation was suggested by LIFE’s lawyers. Summary dismissal might have left the two twits grounds to sue LIFE for wrongful termination. If the company conducts and investigation first before firing them, LIFE is probably on much firmer ground if they opt for termination for cause.

Edited to add: MA is also an “implied contact” employment state. This may impose a de facto requirement for LIFE to investigate questionable conduct before terminating an employee for cause.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

@ 307 … Qulaifier # 1. Did YOU ever serve? Qualifier # 2 # 2. How dare you ask, “how proud must those fallen soldiers be?” Please explain that question to ME. What line of reasoning are you attempting to articulate?

@313 I could not care if we earn her respect. There are consequences for actions. She was asked right before veterans day to remove them, she refused. She was not ambushed. The veteran community didn’t find her, she found us! It is her that got herself fired, not us! Again, I am proud of my brothers.

@313. “but getting her fired looks more like revenge.” Okay, it LOOKS like revenge. Assuming it smells, feels, and sounds like revenge, too, so what? This isn’t the Knights of Columbus here, pal. If she loses her job as a consequence of her imbecility, well, gee, that’s just too bad.

Anonymous

@323: Provided she’s good at her job, I don’t want her to lose it, either – I’d rather she keep it, and for people to know she’s there and hold her accountable rather than for her to vanish, collect unemployment, and boil over with anger over all this.

She’s already in a world of hurt; some good coming out of this would be welcome. Have her volunteer with the VA, run a care package drive for soldiers overseas, and every day write up something on Facebook about a soldier who lost their life. Something like that is far better than having her lose her job.

CBSenior

@321 So now you are the spokeman for all of us. I agree that there are consequences for actions, but you do not use a 155 to kill a fly on the side of your house. What better advocate or fighter for our cause would have she been if converted. Leadership is not always about kicking people in the nuts, and extremism no matter for what side is wrong. She did not walk into her place of work and say fire me because I was an asshole at Arlington National, so accept your consequences of pushing that envelope open. The punishment most certainly does not fit the crime, it was overkill.

Grandaughterofavet

Anyone saying this is “Freedom of Speech” and humor gone awry, say that to my cousins face who is now fighting so stupid bitches like this can have the freedom to do this! Or to my Grandfather who was scarred for life when a charge blew apart his ship and he got shrapnel in his face! Yet he still went on to fight in Vietnam and Korea! Anyone who thinks this is in anyway funny is disgusting, and exactly what is wrong with this country. These are dead men and women who fought so you people can have the rights to be the assholes that you are. You are pathetic, undeserving, and a waste of humanity. This is not about differences in opinion its about respect for people who paid a far bigger price than this POS ever will. I’m sure this turd on the shoe of all that is decent, wouldn’t even have the balls to face the things these people did. The idea that this idea even popped into her moronic little head shows her lack of morals and basic human decency. What a useless pig.

Green Thumb

Actually, where were her “clients”, “patients” or “residents” when this was happening?

Were they supervised?

That in itself should be a termination offense given the unique capabilities and need for specialized attention of such individuals in a very crowded, public environment.

I hope LIFE takes that into consideration when cotemplating their decision(s).

Grandaughterofavet

In my own case, I want to say to all vets and current service people whom are reading this page, “I am proud of all of you. Your sacrifices are not forgotten. You are the best America has to offer, and I thank heaven every day that such brave personages such as yourselves are working to keep me free. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU ALL!”

2-17 Air Cav

@325. No, I did not appoint myself spokesman for all here. I did, however, point out the obvious, that this is a milblog, not the Knights of Columbus or, for that matter, a website run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. How does that make me a spokesman? As for your overkill argument, you made it, I rebuffed it, and that should be that. What else is there but to acknowledge that your view and mine are not one?

CBSenior

@321 Was a posting by Somali Vet SPC Hall. That is who I was responding to.

Hondo

CBSenior: I dunno if I agree that getting fired is necessarily “overkill”. This seems quite a bit worse to me than showing up late for work a few times or cursing. In some jobs those are offenses that get people canned.

The story has hit the local CBS affiliate (see link in 312 above). The lady and her twit companion therefore just caused her employer – directly or indirectly – to get a huge chunk of bad publicity. That could well impact their bottom line for quite a while.

Grandaughterofavet

CBSENIOR, the punishment most certainly fit the crime. And obviously there is no converting a self professed “douchebag”. This girl wanted attention and she got it. Actions have consequences. If we can save one other institution or memorandum, or person from this waste of human fleshes idea of “fighting the law” than our job is done. I don’t want this on my side, I want it thinking twice before it is dumb/ignorant enough to do it again. Jeez I wonder if she has pissed on Plymouth rock? After all, didn’t they fight the king and run because they were crybabies about not getting their own religious freedom? (I am a decedent of Edward Doty of the Mayflower, I have heard people call the Pilgrims this and more. Usually snot nosed little itches though.) Or what they heck does she do to disabled people? “Get up outta that chair you aren’t disabled!” These people do not have one defect they have many, the punishment was not severe enough!

2-17 Air Cav

@330. I don’t want to see you hammered. Your view is yours and that’s okay with me, at least.

Brianna

Fuck you Lindsey Stone

Brianna

Luckily you are not in my town or I will fucking whoop your ass for disrespecting
The dead you douchebag whore

CBSenior

Hondo, I guess I see the overkill in my eyes that people went after her job. I just feel that in my eyes we are bigger than these POS, tell them to fuck off and move along smartly taking care of each other. I know that is what is being done for our Heros. We do not know who is counting on her for food and shelter. There is big difference between stupidity and being malicious with intent. Those places you mention about being canned also have those options to fire you for their rules, did her employer get such option to cunduct their business as they see fit. Or were they pressured, we do not like it when the Democractic Underground employs the same tactics.

Hotmike

I wonder how much Federal Funding LIFE gets?

Air Cav do not worry bro, big shoulders. Not my first wind mill tilt, if you are not willing to risk your Anchors for troops or what you believe in, then you do not deserve them. Thanks, I am more than sure we will see eye to eye on most things. That is why we are here.

OWB

@ #327 Bingo! If she claims that the residents did not observe the posing and taking of this pic, then who was assisting them? If she claims that the residents were never out of view, why was she subjecting them to at least one obscene gesture, and who knows what else, during the posing and taking of this pic?

Either way, she committed a discretion for which I would fire her, were she my employee, or for which I would fire the employer if I had a loved one who was subjected to the antics of this idiot.

Egads! I thought this was bad enough when it looked like the fool and her photog might have been there for a conferance or something. But this? They were being paid to assist their residents? Wow! They just provided clear evidence that they were not doing their jobs. Should be easy grounds for termination.

Hondo

CBSenior: free speech is a package deal, with both good and bad outcomes from time to time. It isn’t always pretty, and I don’t always like how it’s used.

But freedom of speech certainly beats the hell out of the alternatives I’ve seen. I’d argue strongly against restricting it any further than the law currently allows.

And if she ends up losing her job? As far as I’m concerned she can look in the mirror to see the person responsible.

Stupidity has consequences, and employment is not an entitlement.

Hondo, for me this one just does not feel right, gut feeling. Did not like the way it unfolded and as to her, she is a fool and classless. I just kind of saw us sinking to her level. Me being a have to speak up kind of guy I did, besides most of a MILBLOG vs a Senior Chief = Fair Fight. Right Master Chief. Peace to all my Brothers.

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.)

I am with the Senior Chief onthis one!

Wait … what did I just agree to.

It is generally all good amoung us here. Good argument is good.

It is almost beer up time here!

MCPO NYC USN (Ret.): see my comment 263. I’ve already scrubbed the false IDs from the offending comments and replaced them with that of the apparent perp, “Navy_Seals”.

“Shithead” would probably have been more accurate. But I’d have had to go back and change his original identity to do that, and I didn’t think changing his original persona was apropos even if the change would have been more accurate.
