The wife of Robert Mason, the author of the book about the Vietnam War “Chickenhawk“, sends us the news that Dennis Surrendi, the Canadian phony who lifted Mr. Mason’s book and life and put it all under Surrendi’s name in his own book “Set Me Free” has conceded that he lied and admits that he has no military experience and that he plagiarized his book.
The Masons say that they gave Surrendi the option to publicly admit that he’s a liar to avoid a legal confrontation. This notice was published in his local paper;

It was very nice of the Masons not to take his dentures and Depends in a civil suit. And if the content of that “Notice” reflects the quality of this goose-gazer’s writing, it’s no wonder he plagiarized Robert Mason’s work. Jeez.

That was my next guess as well. Before we know it, we’ll hear about his next book chronicling his rise to the rank of MG as well as how he got his decorations with pics of him in a uniform resembling that of a North Korean General, some third world Generalissimo, or Kirjath Tomey’s!
For any of you that haven’t read Chickenhawk in a while, I recommend getting a new copy. I picked up a copy on Tuesday and I guess it is the 2nd edition. There is a new “Afterword” chapter written by Mr. Mason. After buying the book, I sat out in the parking lot reading the new material. He mentions a speaking engagement where he was paired up with Bill Reeder. As a youngster, I wore the POW bracelet of Captain William S. Reeder Jr. I still have that bracelet.
Last weekend, my 12 year old son devoured Battle Cry by Leon Uris. This week he will have Chickenhawk by Robert Mason, or Currahee by Donald Burgett to choose from (I found a hard cover copy of Currahee at Half Price Books WOOT!)
