“Chinese Virus” Hate Speech in San Antonio

San Antonio passes a resolution labeling “Chinese Virus” as hate speech. One justification for this is the victimization of Chinese Americans and their property. Asian Americans have also been attacked.

According to the article, Asian Americans are being profiled as disease carriers. In one week in March, for example, 650 racist attacks against Asian-Americans were reported.

The term Chinese virus has been labelled hate speech by San Antonio’s city council.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who put forward the now-passed resolution, blamed the use of the terms Chinese virus and Kung Fu virus for a rise in hate speech during the course of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Texas city will now ask its citizens to ‘report any such antisemitic, discriminatory or racist incidents to the proper authorities for investigation’, according to San Antonio’s WOAI-TV.

US senator Ted Cruz blasted the decision as ‘nuts’. He added that the council were acting like ‘a lefty college faculty lounge’.

In a tweet on Thursday he wrote: ‘This is NUTS. SA City Council behaving like a lefty college faculty lounge, triggered by Chick-fil-A & the words “Wuhan virus”.

The only reason I am pointing this out is that a resolution is fluff. An ordinance is law.

Are descriptive adjectives now illegal? Scariest part is the “ask its citizens to report”. Not making any excuses for the SOBs that are attacking persons of Asian appearance, trash is gonna be trash, those acts should be punished. Chinese virus is the Chinese virus. There is no other way to refer to it. Calling the term “Chinese virus” hate speech is childish and irrational, not to mention politically correct and virtue signalling. Why are you so afraid of offending the Chinese? The mayor, whose cockamamie idea this was, is a member of San Antonio’s small, liberal, Jewish community and was raised in uber-liberal Austin by a Peace Corps father and an ASIAN mother. So he not only has all the liberal tickets punched, explaining his willingness to crap on the Constitution, he has a very personal, family interest in promulgating this ordinance.

I used to sit in on some San Antonio city council meetings back in the 90’s and can tell you the liberal minorities were already pushing anti-Anglo (White) restrictions like this even then. Now that most of the conservatives have moved out into the far suburbs and the Texas Hill Country (as the Poe’s did in 1996) the inmates have taken over the asylum.

I don’t see the Texas AG or Supreme court allowing this to stand.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping (習近平) asked World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to suppress news about the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the German intelligence agency BND found, according to a report by German magazine Der Spiegel.

During a conversation on Jan. 21, Xi reportedly asked Tedros not to announce that the virus could be transmitted between humans and to delay any declaration of a coronavirus pandemic.

It took until the end of January before the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak needed to receive international attention.

Generally speaking (and according to the Texas Statutes) a “resolution” is not a law.

(Ordinances, statutes, and laws that are passed are law.)

This is the type of thing that people cower under because they don’t know what they are talking about.

All a “resolution” is, according to Texas law is “a formal expression of opinion or decision, other than a proposed law, that may be offered for approval to one or both houses of the legislature by a member of the house or senate.”

What is even more interesting is that in 1989, the State of Texas lost a famous case that went to the Supreme Court called “Texas v. Johnson (491 U.S. 397).

This is the famous flag burning case, the decision in which probably angers many people here. (The Supreme Court ruled flag burning protected speech.)

However, the key phrase from that case is this: If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.

Which brings up the question that we have been asking for years now: “where is the City Attorney in these types of votes?”

“City Attorney’s” don’t work for the people of a given city / county. They work for the commission and or councils of that city / county. They can be fired if they don’t go along with the Commission / Councils’ directions, even if they were to say “this is contrary to the Constitution and Supreme Court decisions.”

To us, this is another indication that the “lawlessness” in the land is often not from the people, but from elected officials and those working for any government.

How long has SA been so sensitive and easily worked up over things like “hate speech”? Went to 91V school in the mid 80’s and didn’t remember it that way back then.
