Saginaw parolee arrested after ‘celebratory gunfire’ on New Year’s Eve

By Cole Waterman
SAGINAW, MI — Gunshots on Saginaw’s East Side led to a parolee spending his New Year’s Eve in jail.

About 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, Michigan State Police troopers in the area of Wilkins and Cambrey streets heard “consistent celebratory gunfire,” according to Special 1st Lt. David Kaiser. The cacophony continued and troopers pinpointed its origins to a house on the corner of Van Etten and Gallagher streets.

Troopers received backup before contacting those at the residence. As troopers and Saginaw police officers approached the house, a 26-year-old man stepped outside with a pistol in his hand, Kaiser said.

Police ordered the man to the ground and secured him. Another person in the doorway saw the officers and tried running back into the house, only to also be detained, Kaiser said.

The homeowner allowed police to search the house. Police discovered multiple shell casings, ammunition boxes, and several guns around the house’s back door and garage area, Kaiser said.

Looking through the windows of of vehicles in the driveway, police noticed several more cased long guns in one car, Kaiser said. A 21-year-old man at the residence told police the car and the long guns were his and that he had fired three of them earlier in the night, Kaiser said.

Three long guns and an additional handgun were seized by police. Police determined the 26-year-old man was a convicted felon on parole. They arrested him on charges of parole violation, felon in possession of a firearm, felony firearm, and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Man Fatally Shoots Ex-Girlfriend In Apparent Act Of Self-Defense

A man fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in an apparent act of self-defense after she and another man who was armed attempted to assault him at his home in Dublin late Thursday morning, police said.

Officers who responded to the 3400 block of Monaghan Street in Dublin at about 11:30 a.m. on Thursday to investigate a report of a home-invasion robbery found a 28-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds, Dublin police spokesman Capt. Nate Schmidt said in a news release.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man who was with her was transported to a hospital to be treated for wounds that aren’t considered life-threatening, according to Schmidt.

The man who lives at the house told investigators that he was asleep when he awoke to banging on his front door, Schmidt said.

Man who threatened to kill New Year’s Eve partygoers in Canton shot, killed by armed guest

Mathew Richards
CANTON, Texas — Police say alcohol played a contributing factor when a man threatened to kill New Year’s Eve partygoers in Canton, Texas, and was himself shot and killed by an armed guest.

On January 1, 2020, at approximately 2:30 a.m., the Canton Police Department, Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a residence in the 500 block of Buffalo Street for a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, police discovered 61-year-old Alan Bates of Plano, Texas, deceased of multiple apparent gunshot wounds.

Bates, according to police, was an attendee at the New Year’s Eve party at the house.

“During the party, Bates became highly agitated at other attendees of the party, became aggressive, and made threats towards a couple who were also visiting the residence,” read a statement from the Canton Police Department. “The couple chose to leave the party to avoid a confrontation.”

Despite the couple leaving, witnesses told police they attempted to calm Bates down and, after he became aggressive and threatening to other partygoers, he was asked to leave the residence.

Police say Bates went to his vehicle, retrieved a handgun, and “walked back towards the residence while screaming threats to kill people inside,” according to police.

Two down and two inconvenienced, Delta Whiskies and Whiskettes. Wonder if the new boy friend will be charged with the homicide. It’s in San Fran, so all bets are off.

2 down and 2 inconvenienced is 2 pair; still a good hand in any game. The winning is just beginning here at the FIRST of the New Year.

And that is a purty Ruger MkIII Bull. Not a great big fan of those designs, but it is purty.

David

I know the Rugers are highly customizable, but always wonder why the Brownings get little press – a slab-side Buckmark will compete against any .22 and has a better grip angle.

Graybeard

And I’d not turn down either the Ruger or the Browning if they were given me.

Like that’s gonna happen.

David

Please let me know where you can find a Ruger that cheap? The Mk IV and Buckmarks are usually within a few bucks of each other. I suspect your modified Ruger was used… unfair comparison if so.

David

dude, 10-12 years ago… really? More coffee!
GB shows cheapie Ml IVs at about $350, nicer models like bull barrels (more equivalent to the slab-side Buckmark at $400 and up. The new Buckmarks start under $400, used (like the Rugers) will set you back $250-300. No argument there are more accessories available for the Rugers, so if that is your thing they become a clear winner. But out of a box? I would put any standard Browning up against any equivalent Ruger, and not lose money very often.

AW1ED;
When I was on the Brink’s Pistol team, one of the members had a MK 1 or Mk 11 for the .22 rimfire Police L match which took place after the .38 police L match (slow, timed, rapid fire) and he used to tell me that it was a real pain in the butt to field strip. I used to use my High Standard Victor .22 which was made in Conn., and my S&W Mod 14 .38/6in. barrel with a Bomar Rib and sights installed. This was back in 1971 or 72. The only things that took a beating were my handgun target case that fell apart when it rained when we had a match in New Jersey where the shooting points were uncovered and my shooting jacket that some of you saw the picture of on this site which was left in the trunk of my car and I didn’t realize that water was leaking into the trunk when I was driving in the rain. Just couldn’t get those stains out. Also had trouble with my High Standard with some rust from shooting a match in the rain and I used Brownells bottled bluing which was also rubbed in with gun oil and 0000 steel wool if I remember correctly. Used up the remainder a couple of years ago when I got a Freebee Colt Pocket .25 and had to take it apart down to parade rest to clean it. Given to me by a deceased friend’s Daughter whom was a retired Yonkers, NY Detective.

David

Used to shoot .22 Bullseye against a bunch of fellas who mostly used modified Rugers of various Marks, a few High Standards, coupla Smiths, a few Brownings. On any given day, any of the guns could win – they all shot better than we did.

The Ex-girlfriend couldn’t screw him the traditional way, so she tried to screw him another way. She ended up getting screwed.
