Weekend Open Thread
Here’s your Big Chance to goof off at your leisure.
Hunting season should be well underway by now, although the Canada geese seem to not want to leave until they’re forced to at the head of a snowstorm. Even so, they sometimes stick around all winter if it isn’t too awful and people are silly enough to feed them. Ice fishing will start in a few months, if the ice is thick enough. Check your Almanac for the long range forecasts. They’re usually about 80% correct, but it’s generalized for an area, not a small location.
We were subjected to an unpleasant early snow in the general area, brought in by a swooping swoop of cold air from the northwest. It dumped 5.25 inches of white fluff stuff on my front steps and I have yet to convince my cat to pick up a shovel and deal with the snow. She would rather pound her ears in her little nest, and have the usual dreams about hunting for rodents.
So if you have a great hunting story, fire away!

iPhone update update keeps correcting sh*t and seems IMPOSSIBLE to turn off.
Enuf excuses: Have a GREAT weekend y’all!
(Do I need a ruling on the field or we good?)
You’re good with me, the closest competition!
We’re good. I posted the imgur screen shot below.
YOU DA MAN.
I doff my chapeau to you and hand over the crown and scepter
Good job, Roh-Dog!Enjoy lording it over all the TAH weeds & weedettes this week.
Thanks Chip, GB, et al.
I’ll take this awesome responsibility to highlight the Great Benevolent Market at its complete break with anything called reality.
Yesterday our Lesser Chamber voted to usurp the People, today Volatility is DOWN 3%!
Wtf.
It gets better when you look at the amount of debt being printed by Central Banks, civil unrest around du Monde, the stagnation of economies, 4 large banks in China folding…
I’m not prognosticating but I advocate getting some kind of insurance.

Ok, I’ll settle for 5th. A 5th of good Scotch isn’t bad.
Up at 0500 to be at the hospital to do the paperwork and be present at a surgery for my brother, only to find that the Doctor had forgotten to have the hospital schedule the procedure.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The doc then reschedules it for Monday, and I have to back out of a substituting job.
Deer season starts this weekend in the AO. Lots of folks will be worshiping in The Church of the Holy Deer Stand this Sunday, missing out on an extra hour of sleep in the process.
Good hunting to all.
Residents only here tomorrow.
Get up early, hit the local hunters breakfast
then go back home, take a nap and hunt later.
DeerCamp!
Did you ever read Patrick MacManus’ short story about a “hunter’s breakfast”? Funny and probably true.
Always enjoyed Patrick MacManus’ work.
Top 10 Woo-hoo!! Happy weekend everyone!
Goddamn it, I got moderated cause I fat fingered my post.
2:38 with Commissioner Wretched and Rob-Dog
Looks like Rob-Dog got it.

As Maxwell Smart used to say, “Missed it by … THAT much.” So I honor and recognize Roh-Dog as this week’s Lord over all of us at TAH! In honor of his lordiness, here’s this week’s trivia! DID YOU KNOW…? Was an honest rematch suggested between the two principal characters in the 1950s quiz show scandals? By Commissioner Wretched Good grief. Where has the time gone? We are now just two months away from the last year of the second decade of the 21st Century! Yes, in just over eight weeks, we’ll be ringing in 2020 … and it still feels like we just brought 2019 into existence. What in the world is going on with time? Is that old wives’ tale true, that the older you get, the faster it goes? True, some of the individual hours tend to drag, but the days, weeks, months … they go by more and more rapidly as I get older. As a child I never saw myself an old man; now, as an old man, I have trouble remembering myself as a child. Or much of anything else, for that matter. But one thing that neither time nor memory can take away is my desire to bring you the best in trivia. And if this isn’t the best, it’s not because I didn’t try. Enjoy and come back next week for more, y’hear? Did you know … … it is illegal to sell your eyes in Texas? (Especially if you’re using them!) … giraffes cannot cough? (Imagine, if you will, what it would sound like if they could.) … at any given hour, there are about 61,000 people flying over the United States? (Yeah, but how many of them are in airplanes?) … one of the primary players in the game show scandals of the 1950s wanted an honest rematch? Herbert Stempel (born 1926) was a multiple winner on the 1950s program “Twenty-One” when producers rigged the game to allow college professor Charles Van Doren (1926-2019) to defeat him. The producers felt Van Doren would be a more “acceptable” champion to the… Read more »
The year AD 2020 as the last year of the second decade of the 21st Century, a point that will show up in an open thread that I have scheduled over the holidays.
On another note, Blade Runner, 1982 movie, was set for November 2019:
https://futurism.com/blade-runner-set-november-2019
Too bad the movie didn’t portray all the fires in SoCal instead of all that rain. But they did get one part right, there were lots of people on the street in LA that don’t speak English. They just weren’t living in tents on the sidewalk.
Thank You, CW, for another great week of Trivia.
On selling eyes in Texas:
“Texas Penal Code § 48.02. Prohibition of the Purchase and Sale of Human Organs”:
https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/penal-code/penal-sect-48-02.html
(a) In this section, “human“Human organ” means the human kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, eye, bone, skin, or any other human organ or tissue, but does not include hair or blood, blood components (including plasma), blood derivatives, or blood reagents. The term does not include human fetal tissue as defined by Section 48.03 .
(b) A person commits an offense if he or she knowingly or intentionally offers to buy, offers to sell, acquires, receives, sells, or otherwise transfers any human organ for valuable consideration.
(d) A violation of this section is a Class A misdemeanor.
Joe Bob Briggs, a guy who has probably reviewed 10,000 really bad drive-in movies, is a virtual Sensei at the art of using “fu” to describe different forms of violence. In a typical bar fight scene, for example, there might be bar-stool fu, pool cue fu, or thrown-through-the-window fu…
I’m still getting used to Jonn being gone.
Commish, regarding ‘where did it go?” from Wikipedia:
Psychologists have found that the subjective perception of the passing of time tends to speed up with increasing age in humans. This often causes people to increasingly underestimate a given interval of time as they age. This fact can likely be attributed to a variety of age-related changes in the aging brain, such as the lowering in dopaminergic levels with older age; however, the details are still being debated.[62][63][64] In an experimental study involving a group of subjects aged between 19 and 24 and a group between 60 and 80, the participants’ abilities to estimate 3 minutes of time were compared. The study found that an average of 3 minutes and 3 seconds passed when participants in the younger group estimated that 3 minutes had passed, whereas the older group’s estimate for when 3 minutes had passed came after an average of 3 minutes and 40 seconds.[65][66]
One day to an 11-year-old would be approximately 1/4,000 of their life, while one day to a 55-year-old would be approximately 1/20,000 of their life. This helps to explain why a random, ordinary day may therefore appear longer for a young child than an adult.[68] The short term appears to go faster in proportion to the square root of the perceiver’s age.[69] So a year would be experienced by a 55-year-old as passing approximately 2¼ times more quickly than a year experienced by an 11-year-old. If long-term time perception is based solely on the proportionality of a person’s age, then the following four periods in life would appear to be quantitatively equal: ages 5–10 (1x), ages 10–20 (2x), ages 20–40 (4x), age 40–80 (8x).[68]

Looks like HP Lovecraft was right (In the Mountains of Madness).
I hope everyone doesn’t mind if I share some pictures from Japan. Taken at Tokyo DisneySea. https://photos.app.goo.gl/KXUNTPvieQPZC3HC9
Great pics Cameron. I liked the pic of Capt. Nemos Nautilus but I didn’t see Kirk Douglas and Jackie Mason on deck, and what looks like NYC’s old 3rd ave EL (elevated) which we sold to Japan before the war. My Japanese Nikon doesn’t go click when I hit the shutter release, it only goes crik. tried soaking the camera in WD 40 but no good so every time I want to use it, I have to get up Oily in the morning. Glad you had a nice time there.
Thanks, Jeff. Glad you liked them.
Those are nice pics, Cameron. So much fun!
Domo for sharing them with us.
Do you live in Japan or just visiting?
😊
I currently do but I have to move back state side when I turn 23 which will be this December as I am in Japan as a dependent student so I am trying to find a permanent job so I can stay a few more years. My mom told me I could come with her if I went back to school so I am currently working on my bachelors degree in Paralegal Studies with Liberty University.
Top twenty and Honorary First once again.
((((OVER))))
Present! No Halloween glitches last night, the little elote’ man got nothing but rave reviews! Well, except from a couple that just moved here from Kentucky, and just didn’t get it.
DST ends on Sunday, November 3, 2019, at 2:00 A.M.
Reminder: turn your clocks back. Some of them won’t update themselves, you know. None of mine do.
Impeach Daylights Saving Time.
(See my comments on the Halloween Open Thread).
😊
Amen!
Don’t really care which system they use – pick one and stick with it. All year around. Forever.
The name itself gives away that it’s all a lefty plot. No sane person actually believes that any daylight is saved by changing the hands on a clock. Nope. It’s all part of the plan. Convince the sheeple that they are getting something good out of the deal when all that really happens is that the entire country is confused for a couple of weeks twice each year as they readjust to calling the time of day something different today than they did last month.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Top 30 anyway. Have a great weekend everyone. Thanks to you all for being part of my family.
Well I just be a hornswoggled broke F5 late to the party wasted time frame. Buzzed in from the K Roger at 1253 hours, brought in the cold provisions to the frigidaire and been steady abusing the refresh button since 1258 hours. Stepped out long enough to see if the FGS had opened for comments, chastised ‘Ed for that missed landing and lo and behold here’s the WOT with a boatload of miscreanted DWs already loading up the thread.
Rats to the Cong for my man Roh Dog on his win. Poor ol’ Chipster got faked out several times, Bless his Heart. I will console myself by chowing down the the pert near $500 worth of groceries I got for $218. Let me get everything put away, make me a bowl of that soup from the crocked pot, grab a coupla slices of that fresh 3 cheese bread that Ms Thang a the deli hooked me up with and I can peruse the other thread from earlier.
CW, another fine job on the trivia. If you would kind Sir, drop your linky to your paper back in here, it fell off the radar when I changed ‘putors. Thanks!
I remember my Dad complaining every Friday night when our family went shopping at the local A&P supermarket that around $25.00 was a lot of money to feed a family of four. We did get the green stamps and licked them into the green stamp book when we got home.
An appropriate size block of those stamps
looked just like a Massachusetts vehicle
inspection sticker. Worked like a charm.
Our paper doesn’t have an online presence, but I do have the column posted each week on Facebook:

Epstein didn’t kill himself, Lawn Dart Danny did, and he’s still dead!
But the unknown question is was Danny’s death an act of “self-murder” or did he die by accident while trying to fly-by-Ipad? That is the question we may never have answered. I am suspecting the latter is more likely than not.
He was dumb enough to actually make that plausible.
Yup, anyone who thinks they can get an airspeed, or even an accurate groundspeed, from an I-pad is too dumb to be allowed anywhere near the controls of an aircraft in flight. Plus, knowing an accurate ground speed won’t tell you anything about whether you are about to stall and fall out of the sky. But, of course, we have to keep in mind that our bleoved Danny-boi didn’t even have a regular private pilot’s license.
wow…. cursor disappeared from the computer for two hours. No online remedies from Microsoft or otherwhere helped, finally on second mouse and fourth reboot all of a sudden the system decided it had once had one and probably should show it again. Shot the planned afternoon of scoping out all the gun stores in Longview TX all to hell. May have saved me some money, I guess…
Did you look in the back?
Sometimes it gets stuck there if you move the
mouse too fast.
Interesting. Simply as a casual observation, the mouse problem might be related not to the mouse, or its device driver, but to a flakey USB bus. As an alternative to replacing the mouse and/or a reboot/restart of the system, you might be better off doing a full system shutdown-restart and/or changing the USB port that the mouse is using.
Newer MS Windows systems tend to be fairly adept at recognizing when a USB device is plugged in, unplugged, or then plugged back in again. Essentially making them hot-swappable. A few years ago, that wasn’t always true. There can also still be quirks down at a BIOS level that don’t relate to Windows per se.
If these suggestions don’t work there’s also the old IT fallback, common during SCSI device days, of sacrificing a young goat to the Gods of Hardware…
So, you eventually passed a cursory inspection?
Not only shut it down, did full hardware reset by turning off power strip. Eventually it started working on simple shut down/power up.
Out of curiosity, what was it that caused the problem? Did the original mouse go bad, was it a bad connection at the USB port, or something else?
Here’s an IT trivia story: Years ago, when the IBM PC and its clones were a big deal, it wasn’t unusual to have periodic memory failure on the mainboard. What would happen is that the thermal cycling of having a machine, for example, routinely turned on in the morning and off at night would result in memory chips walking out of their sockets. The phenomenon was called “chip creep.”
And the only solution was to pull the case cover, physically remove all the memory the chips, and re-seat them. At the time, there were typically four banks of nine chips each for a total of 36. It was a tedious process, and there was lots of cheering when system vendors went to slotted inline memory modules.
This is an interesting podcast episode and worth a listen. The interviewer is a little bit “golly gee”, but it’s still worth it. The person being interviewed claims to be a former Force Recon Marine officer who transitioned to USCYBERCOM. It is the story of how ISIS networks and online assets were successfully attacked and eradicated.

A Proud Infidel®™ has an addiction and is not seeking any help for it. I’ve had a hobby lately of visiting Mom & Pop Gun Stores lately and not leaving until I’ve at least purchased a box or two of ammo. What am I addicted to more, stockpiling Guns & Ammo, patronizing Mom & Pop small businesses, doing what pisses moonbat liberals off or all three? Either way I’m continuing my habit!
A good habit to have.
“Beto O’Rourke Is Dropping Out of the Presidential Race”:

Next!
The House Seat formerly occupied by Beatoff O’Rourke would never have been won if it weren’t for Beatoff’s multimillionaire FIL. If it weren’t for him, Beatoff O’Rourke couldn’t have even gotten elected to be Dog Catcher!
If it weren’t for his connections (by marriage and family) he likely couldn’t even get an actual J.O.B.
That’s a shame… the little white privilege, pretend hispanic drunk driver was the only dim that came close to telling the truth about his gun control goals…
That was his problem–he committed an unforgivable sin for a Democrat–he told the truth.
You forgot Burglar as well!
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
Robiblanco needs to learn to code.
Love you guys
Dang, Friday already? Where does the time go? Gotta stop sniffin’ glue.

Just sayin’. 😉

Not if you use a computer in Orange City, Florida U.S.A.
Sad news that Rudy Boesch, one of SEAL Team TWO’s plankowners, passed away on Friday. All the news reports focus on his time on the reality TV show ‘Survivor’, so I’ll just post the Wikipedia link, which covers his military career too:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Boesch
Thanks for the heads up LC, and for the linky. Hell of a man. Wonder how many fakers will show up at his service or on these pages?
Rest Easy Master Chief. God’s Peace and Comfort be unto your Family and Mateys. Our loss is Valhallas’ gain.
🙁 😥 🙁
Sad to hear. He was a true badass and a pioneer in special warfare. Served for 45 years. Look at that picture of him in his dress blues. Almost ran out of room for all those stripes.
I always liked that his dog tags had his religion as “PT”.
Look at the service stripes on Rudy’s dress blues.

Here’s an interesting comment from American Thinker about what the real motivation is behind the Democrats’ intense interest in Ukraine.
******************************************************
The bottom line here is not some friendly phone call, it is energy and who will provide the energy and control Europe and Eastern Europe in the foreseeable future. Will it be Russia through gas pipelines or will it be western oil interests through tanker shipments of LNG. Russia’s current main gas pipeline supply is through Ukraine and into Europe; Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Slovakia, Czechia, Austria, southern Germany…etc.. The western oil interests want Russia’s current market and the control/influence that comes along with it. The successful coup in Ukraine was done by western oil interests to disrupt Russian gas supply lines through physical force and political opposition. As a result, Russia has decided to abandon Ukraine as the main supply route and instead, develop an additional gas supply line in the Baltic Sea, to the north, called Nordstream II, and a southern pipeline through the Black Sea in cooperation with Turkey. So there is now a relationship and cooperation between Turkey (Erdogan) and Russia to supply gas through pipelines to mediterranean southern Europe. This pipeline is called the Turk Stream Gas Pipeline. This is why western oil interests tried to perform a coup against Erdogan during the last administration (Obama) in 2016. The CIA arranged replacement for Erdogan was to be a Turkish Cleric, Fethullah Gulen, who is living in Pennsylvania. They failed…… Another failure was the coup attempt in Syria in order to build a direct gas pipeline from the Arab states (Western oil interests) to deep water ports in Syria for distribution to southern Europe.
Anyways, control, power, and political influence through energy supply is what directs the current international political theater…..just read between the lines…..don’t believe the BS put out by the US main stream media; think critically, and follow the money. You don’t need a weather man to know which way the wind blows…….
hmmmmmm… The plot sickens.
I read that the British Military is considering a National Defence [sic] service medal. The article I’m linking to here is critical of the idea; according to the author, this would cheapen the whole idea of military medals. Here’s a quote from the article:
In this country it isn’t our military tradition to hand out medals for little reason. Campaign medals are achieved when our soldiers deploy to lands far away in conflict; rarer yet are the accolades that are handed out for ultimate bravery, those such as the George Cross or of course, the pinnacle bestowed on military heroism, the Victoria Cross.
For you Veterans on here, what do you think? Do you agree with the sentiments in that article? Specifically, the author’s throwing shade at the American awards system?
Link: https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/not-every-british-soldier-in-the-army-deserves-a-medal-9853511.html
Nobody hands out service medals like the Air Force. They’ll have to institute a whole host of pointless medals if they want to beat us.
Interesting tidbit about Vindman from the sidebar of Ace of Spades:
https://mobile.twitter.com/Jim_Hickman13/status/1190077852680634368
The alleged behavior is despicable.
Looks like he took lessons from our resident “social justice warrior”…
That was well worth reading. TNX
Good proof that Vindman is a 24K boot licking 0bamite just like that “pajama boy” body double!
