No charges filed in Durango man’s death
Authorities say shooter acted in self-defense

By Jonathan Romeo Herald Staff Writer
Authorities will not pursue charges in the death of a 30-year-old Durango man who was shot and killed in August near the Colorado-New Mexico state line.

“Upon reviewing the investigation and evidence in the case, and after discussing thoroughly with the investigating officers from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office has determined that there is no reasonable likelihood of conviction in this case, and has thus declined to file charges,” 6th Judicial District Attorney Christian Champagne wrote in an email to The Durango Herald.

“The evidence clearly supported that the suspect was acting in self-defense, and there is insufficient evidence to the contrary that would justify bringing criminal charges,” he added.

Gregg County Sheriff’s deputy shoots, kills suspect after violent fight on I-20

UPDATE (10:15 A.M.) – The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the suspect killed by a deputy late Sunday night after a violent fight on I-20.

Dewayne Morgan, 37, is from Tatum and had convictions for violence in Gregg County.

Back in 2006, Morgan pled guilty charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Deputy Tubb also released the identity of the deputy involved as Logan Joines. He is 31 years old and from Longview, according to public records.

According to Tubb, Joines had a violent fight with Morgan in the ditch off I-20 and was forced to shoot him. Tubb said that Joines attempted to use his taser, but it was ineffective.

Morgan died of his injuries at a Marshall hospital.

Howard County police: Father fatally shoots son during domestic dispute in Marriottsville

By Phil Davis and Catherine Rentz
Howard County police say a father fatally shot his son in Marriottsville on Tuesday night during a domestic dispute.

Stephen Michael Tucker, 38, of Randallstown, died at the scene after reportedly being shot once by his father, Stephen Dwight Tucker, 68, of Marriottsville, according to police.

Officers were called to the 1500 block of Marriottsville Road at 8:16 p.m. for a report that a man had been shot. When they arrived on scene, they found the son dead and his father with visible injuries, according to police.

Howard County police said officials are consulting with Howard County’s state’s attorney’s office and that no charges have been announced relating to the incident Tuesday night. Police said that “no additional information is available at this early stage; the investigation is ongoing.”

Police wrote in a statement released Wednesday morning that the shooting occurred during an altercation between the two men after the son had allegedly assaulted and injured a different family member at another residence and damaged property shortly before driving to his father’s house.

The Constitution is a written instrument. As such, its meaning does not alter. That which it meant when it was adopted, it means now. — SOUTH CAROLINA v. US, 199 U.S. 437, 448 (1905)

Resurrected in honor of this week’s FIRST award winner. How about that Navy team’s win yesterday?
From my pal AW1 Rod:
Navy finally woke up late in the third quarter, and pummeled Tulsa last night. It was a much-needed Conference win, too. Tulsa has the toughest schedule in the ACC, and I kind of feel bad for them. Kind of.

Army and Air Force play on 02-Nov-2019. Regardless of who wins, it comes down to Army-Navy on 14-Dec-2019 for possession of the CinC Trophy. If Air Force beats Army, they’ll be 1 -1 in academy play, and Army will be 0 – 1. Navy is 1 – 0, but MUST beat Army, because if Army beats Navy (again!), they’ll both be 1 – 1 in academy play, and the tie goes to the current holder of the Trophy…..Army.

I imagine if these were the bedtime stories we read to our kids, the career field of crime would shrink drastically.

If the Three Little Pigs had been armed the
story would have ended much happier.
And don’t even get me started on Little
Red Riding Hood.

When we winning, I’ma grinning. Hopped up on meth & PCP is no way to go thru life son. Good riddance to you but I do have some sympathy for the dogs. May they find a good home.

When the popo says whoa, they mean whoa. Nobody ever wins a fight with the popo or an argument with a woman. Wonder what he was hopped up on?

If you don’t teach them to mind you by the time they’re 4-6 yo, you damn shore can’t expect them to behave when they 38. Damn shame again when a parent has to kill their own child to protect themselves or other family members. Gated nice home on a secluded “several acres” in that area tells me they a little more upscale than your typical hood rats.

Nice little pocket rocket you gots there Mister. Yes I would like to have the entire set. Not just another Saturday Night Special and if Miss Sultry Eyed Thang will give me just 3 steps, I’ll be out the door.

Rats of the Cong for the middies win over the airedales. Even a blind squirrel will find a nut now & again. Black Knights, get back on the horse, after you drop down into the front leaning rest position and give me 50.

Those two comments seem to contradict themselves. The first sure sounds like he thinks the guy is guilty, but he can’t prove it, but the second says it’s clear self defense.. so which one is accurate? You’d think a DA would be more coherent..

Ed, I might have given credit for the first story to the Durango Herald and not the Pine River Times. It was originally written by Herald reporter Jonathan Romeo.

As a matter of minor trivia, you might remember that back in 2012, Jonn wrote a post about a guy named Timmy Oliver who had fed a bogus story to the Durango Herald in which Oliver claimed:

A member of the unit commonly known as Delta Force, he said he hit the ground in Kandahar after a high-altitude jump with thousands of other specialized troops from different branches of service…

What made the story unusual wasn’t that Oliver (AKA Gabryal Sansclair) turned out to be a garden-variety liar; it was that when Herald City Editor Katie Burford found out about it, she confronted Oliver, wrote a retraction, then apologized to TAH. Which was a classy thing to do, and not something often seen. This includes currently by the Port Angeles Peninsula Daily News who still can’t seem to manage to confront “Alaska” Bob Glaves.
