Weekend Open Thread-Name Origins of the Days of the Week

| July 12, 2019

Italian bracelet depicting days of the week. From left to right, Monday to Sunday. (Wikipedia)

You guys could pretty much guess the origins of the names for Saturday (Saturn Day), Sunday ( Sun Day), and Monday (Moon Day). We associate those days with celestial bodies. In ancient times, celestial bodies were associated with gods/goddesses.

So, what about Tuesday through Friday?

“Tues” is an echo of “Tiw”, a northern European god of war. in Latin, the name of the day was “Dies Martis”, or “Mars Day”. The Spanish word “Martes” derived from “Dies Martis”. Mars was also the god of war.

Ancient Romans associated Odin with Mercury. Wednesday in English, and Miércoles in Spanish references the “same” god.

Thor was the god of thunder. In addition to being the head of the Roman pantheon of gods, Jupiter was the daytime god of thunder. Thursday echoes “Thor’s Day”, just as Jueves echoes Dies Jovis for Jupiter. Friday? Frigga was Venus’s counterpart. The Romance language names for Friday derive from the Latin name for Venus Day.

So, the days of the week literally run as follows: Sun Day, Moon Day, Mars Day, Mercury Day, Jupiter Day, Venus Day, and Saturn Day.

FIRE MISSION, FIRE MISSION, FIRE MISSION!!! CAL FOR A TOT. All bat’trees fire when ready!

FIRST TO THE KING OF BATTLE!

26Limabeans

There I was making a tuna salad samich when I heard someone yell FIRE MISSION.

Congrats FA. Build that streak.

Sparks

Brother, I’ll take a great tuna samich over being first any Friday. It’s not well known, but there is an art to a great samich.

26Limabeans

Lots of chopped celery and Hellman’s.
On marble rye. Washed down with a Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA.

SFC D

Oh hell yeah, that’s a sammich!

Hondo

A word of caution regarding Sierra Nevada Torpedo. It’s good, but it’s also 7.5% alcohol by volume. So drinking 2 of those is like drinking 3 regular beers – which in turn puts the average guy fairly near the DUI limit if they’re drunk over a short period of time.

That said: enjoy. It’s a very good IPA.

26Limabeans

Can says 7.2% but even at that I agree it can sneak up on you.
I like an IPA of about 6% but this tuff is really good and hides the alcohol taste well.
Cheers!

FIRE MISSION! What… Who…

Come on, you can’t just start shouting that, I was having my first proper nap in weeks! Next thing I know I’m shouting the response and scrambling to find my map and Commander’s Guidance so I can run the mission. Not cool, dude!

Seriously, though, is there a phrase that goes to the soul of an artilleryman faster or deeper than that one?

5th/77th FA

Veritas Omnia Vincit

Dagnabbit didn’t see you claim second when I posted it…where’s my fucking apron?

26Limabeans

You can start by cleaning up the tuna samich I just sneezed.

Claw

Checked the Coveted Book of WOT Firsts.

VOV losing out (to OAE CPO USN Ret) by not claiming “First” occurred on 06 Jul 18.

Commissioner Wretched

Well, darn again. Tried to make it, but you know what they say about trying. (If you know, tell me. I forgot.) Anyway, in lieu of being first, and with congratulations to 5th/77th FA as King of Battle, I offer to you this week’s trivia column. Small recompense, I know, but it’s the best I can do at this time. DID YOU KNOW…? What is the story behind the “hand-holding” grave stones in a Dutch cemetery? By Commissioner Wretched In my office at the newspaper, I have two signs that reflect a rather whimsical outlook at things. One of them is like a portable street sign, lighted and with interchangeable letters. On it, I post each week a humorous quote from a movie or television show – something inspirational, or just something to make me (and visitors to the office) smile. The other is changed out daily and is on a magnetic message board on the wall. It’s darker and more sarcastic, and made up of things I used to post in my classroom when I was teaching. My students used to say that they could read the “mood of the day” from the tone of the message. Some days, they were funny, like “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.” Others, they were a little more somber, such as, “Despite the look on my face, you are still talking to me.” Now that I work in newspapers and write a trivia column, I should replace that with a “fact of the day.” Or maybe not. I don’t think competing against myself is really a good idea. Anyway, here’s this week’s trivia, delivered with a smile and no somberness whatsoever! Did you know … … there’s an underwater hotel in Florida? The popular Jules Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida, sits on the ocean floor under 30 feet of water. Guests have to scuba dive to get to their rooms. (Or they could stay in a nice, dry shore hotel, like I do.) … Russian Tsar Peter I (1672-1725), known as “Peter the Great,” stood 6 feet 7… Read more »

… it is impossible to spell a word using only the keys on the bottom letter row of a standard keyboard?

So I got on my CB radio and asked my Navy friends if anyone had a CV joint for the car I was working on. An old retired BMCM answered up and said that there was an MMCM the next town over that had one. (Ok, so they were initials crammed together, but they were “words” that most Navy types would understand.)

Don’t get me started on the old teletype Z codes.

SFC D

And now, a short educational film on the proper use of abbreviations.

OAE CPO USN Ret

We need a thumbs up button.

26Limabeans

Is that the same guy that played “Francis”?

NHSparky

Nope. Francis Sawyer was played in Stripes by Conrad Dunn.

Lt. Hauk was played by the late Bruno Kirby Jr., who was also in City Slickers, Godfather II, and Donnie Brasco.

26Limabeans

Tanks NHSparky.
Love the tough city boy accents.

Jeff LPH 3, 63-66

Just counted 9 pages of Z codes which were originally a service code of Cable & Wireless Ltd and also used by the Military. Have it in my Klingenfuss 2017/2018 Guide to Utility Radio Stations, 29th edition.

26Limabeans

““Peter the Great,” stood 6 feet 7 inches tall?”

There was a porn star in California from Maine with that name. He committed suicide.
Not tall so not sure how he got the name….

David

I suspect over the years many movies, like ‘Gone With the Wind’ could claim millions or billions of viewers.

ChipNASA

Yeah, whatever, 10th or something

And congrats to 5th/77th FA for pushing everyone back and leaping to the top of the dung heap.

YAY.

Commissioner Wretched

And besides, regarding the days of the week …

Everybody knows Wednesday was named after Tuesday.

Thunderstixx

Siiiiiigggghhhhh…..

“Friday? Frigga was Venus’s counterpart”

And that’s how the term Friggit Friday was born.

From the Department of the Obviously Redundant News Department.

Daniel A Bernath is still dead.

His partner in crime, wHoSe NaMe ShAlL NoT bE sPoKeN, is still in the business of misidentifying people.

He has taken up Frank Dux’s banner and is taking on anyone in the martial arts world that dares to raise the BS flag against ol’ Frankie. He is now on the 10th misidentification of one person. Including doing his usual BS of posting peoples names/address/phone numbers/pictures of their children, etc. Whatever you do, do not, repeat NOT, go to thisainthell.is There is a tracking program installed on that site which logs your IP address. He wHoSe NaMe ShAlL NoT bE sPoKeN, will use that IP address and then try to track you down. Note that I said “try”. See “10th misidentification” above for reference.

GIGGLING

A Proud Infidel®™

How many people has he mistakenly identified as me? Last time I counted Bernath was at at least 13 and given how much more BrAiNlEsS he is I’m sure…

Anyway, it’s been confirmed that he’s the moron who screamed “LEGS SUCK!” in a Chow Hall just to start a rumble.

That mofo has an elevator that doesn’t reach the top floors.

OAE CPO USN Ret

That elevator never cleared the basement.

The doors don’t even open.

50 years ago this month a huge rocket filled with over a million separate parts all working together, designed by thousands of engineers, mathematicians, technicians, pilots, military Flag Grade Officers and 3 brave men, Neil Armstrong Buzz Aldrin and the Command Module Michael Collins left the Florida Launchpad at the newly christened Cape Kennedy on a trail of flame and launched the three intrepid crew members on a journey that was no doubt the most difficult mission since WWII that would land a human being on another planet for the first time in history.
The National Geographic Channel is featuring numerous documentary videos that are well worth the time to watch. As are the History Channel, the Discovery Channel and a host of other places all over the web.
After the loss of the Columbia and loss of the entire crew and the subsequent closure of the Shuttle missions, We are finally going back to space courtesy of a few internet billionaire’s with an adventurous mind and the money to back it up.
My favorite of those is Space-X as they have a spaceport here in Van Horn Texas.
Please remember all the people that have since passed that were involved in that huge undertaking and revel in the technical prowess that America put to use to get that mission accomplished.
God Bless America, her adventurers and all the people that make it happen !!!
Check out the National Geographic program here. I’ve seen it at least a dozen times and I own the DVD collection, “From the Earth, to the Moon”.
Great series to watch, kind of like “Band of Brothers” for space freaks !!!

Great Jupiter Besig, a nice informative article you posted and to bring it up to modern times, you can youtube the Students singing an uptempo “Every Day Of The Week” which is the B (backwidth) side of “I’m So Young” which is a nice ballad on Argo from 1958.

5th/77th FA

Much Thanks for the kind words of congrats from my many loyal TAHellcats. This “Beetle” will be the FIRST to tell you he “likes” the top of the heap. The other beetles tell me they got started on dung after being forced to orally gratify Kankles McPantsuit. Poor things, had to do something to get the taste out of their mouths.

Building a sammich out of the crockett potted orasted beef beast that I did up yesterday. Picked up some fresh baked crusty bread on the provision run I made to the K Roger Store. Grilled porked chops with grilled squash and zuchinnis for supper. And a tatered salad.

Twist

I’m sitting here in Alaska right now watching the world burn. We have wild fires to the North, South, and West from here right now. The closest big one is 70 miles North of Fairbanks. A few people here at work got evacuated and had to leave their homes but are able to return now.

The Other Whitey, If you are up here fighting the fires and have some time off I’ll take you out to lunch work schedule permited.

Twist

Heck, If you are one of the ones fighting the fires on military land I’m probably the one who gave you the UXO brief.

Thunderstixx

When I was stationed up Nort’ dere, we used to go out on fire duty every summer.
Those were fun, plus I was really good with maps and a compass, thanks to the Boy Scouts and somewhat Sgt Charpentier so I got to ride on the Bulldozer with a civilian employee.
That was fun duty and not really hard.
They fed us good too.
The Air Force would fly out of Eielson, shoot off rockets that would set the Tundra on fire and it would burn underground there.
I hope that you get some much needed rain up there and that all will end well for you and the rest of the adventurer’s in one of the most beautiful places on God’s “Green Earth !!!

There is nothing I hate more in a jack ass using the VET Card to go out and screw
People. Reason for posting this is because we have a moron in a little town called La Luz
New Mexico going around claiming to be a vet doing handy man jobs and not completing them
Or just taking money and never doing the job
Last week two real vets called his ass out
And the dumb ass pulled a typical poser tactic and thought that blocking them on FB
And their calls on the phone would end it… NOT !!!!!

Looks like the Fascist Action Groups are ramping up their LARP* games to actual terrorist suicide missions.

But the media keeps covering for the Blackheads, apparently assuming the crocodile is tame. Looking forward to the RICO and Civil Rights actions against their participation.
