Funerals for PFC John W Hayes (World War II) and SGT George R. Schipani (Korea)

| June 15, 2019

This April, DPAA announced that it had accounted for PFC John W. Hayes, US Army. PFC Hayes was lost in Belgium on 4 January 1945.

PFC Hayes will be buried next week – on Wednesday, 19 June 2019 – in Memphis, Tennessee. Regrettably, DPAA does not seem to have posted the specific location for his funeral service or interment.

If any TAH readers have the precise location for PFC Hayes’ funeral service or interment, please post it in comments below. And if any readers are in the area and have the time, here’s an opportunity to give someone lost during World War II a proper final send-off.

This February, DPAA announced that it had accounted for SGT George R. Schipani, US Army. SGT Schipani was lost in North Korea on 2 November 1950.

SGT Schipani will also be buried next week – on Saturday, 22 June 2019 – in Sommerville, Massachusetts. Regrettably, DPAA does not seem to have posted the specific location for his funeral service or interment.

If any TAH readers have the precise location for SGT Schipani’s funeral service or interment, please post it in comments below. And if any readers are in the area and have the time, here’s an opportunity to give someone lost during the Korean War a proper final send-off.

Claw is correct.

John Willis Hayes will be buried with full US Army honors and a Memorial service at 1400 hours, 19 June 2019 in the Fairview Cemetary in Memphis, Texas.

There is a nice picture of PFC Hayes as well as details of his life and service to our Country:

There is a nice picture of SGT George Robert Schipani in uniform at this site. He died as a POW in Korea.

Again, Claw is right.

“Today his remains will return to his hometown in a procession led by Massachusetts State Police and the Somerville Police Department. Sgt. Schipani will be laid to rest at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Somerville, Massachusetts, on Saturday, June 22. Also in attendance at the services will be Sgt. Shipani’s fellow solider and friend from Company K, Cliff Benoit, a resident of neighboring Cambridge. Benoit was a prisoner in Camp 5 along with others from Sgt. Schipani’s unit. In all, half of the more than 3,500 soldiers held at Camp 5 were killed, including Sgt. Schipani. Benoit survived in Camp 5 for approximately two years before being rescued.”

“A funeral service is planned for Saturday, June 22, at the Keefe Funeral Home at 5 Chestnut St., Arlington, MA, beginning at 10 a.m. A burial service will follow, at approximately 11 a.m., at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1340 Broadway, Somerville.”

Rest in Peace, SGT George Robert Schipani.

Thank You, Hondo, for sharing this with us and to Claw for providing the information.

Bring Them All Home

“It’s an honor to be a part of Sergeant Schipani’s final journey home to Somerville,” said Somerville Director of Veterans Affairs, Bryan Bishop. “His story is among countless others of America’s youth who answered the call to protect and defend democracy and freedom. We will always remember the sacrifice Sergeant Schipani and those who served with him made for our Country and we will never forget their bravery and devotion to duty.”

May the rode rise to meet them and the wind be always at their backs.

Anyone who died as a POW in Korea has already been through Hell.

I will be driving in to Memphis, TX, for the Memorial service for PFC John Willis Hayes, if any of you happen to be there.

Happy to report one of our own attended the service for PFC John Willis Hayes. Said it was only a 3.5 hr drive. I suppose that’s just down the road in Texas. Here’s his text:

I went to the funeral of PFC John Willis Hayes today. There was a larger crowd than I expected. Members of Chambers of Commerce in Three piece suits, from surrounding towns, as well as gentlemen who just hopped off their tractors.
Flags lined the gravel road to his grave site.
The Road Honor Guard was there, and I was surprised and impressed at the the ceremonies they performed.
I did not take pictures.
Some things are due of the utmost respect, and must be seen.
I did not approach the family, as they were swamped with friends and family.
There but for the grace of God, go I.
Feel free to post on TAH.

Bravo Zulu! Way to represent.
