Everyone deserves a proper burial. But some funerals are truly memorable, as well as lavish in the extreme. This is an account of one such funeral – and how it was immortalized in song.

But first, a bit of background. Let’s look at two figures from the Chicago criminal underworld of the late 1970s/early 1980s.

. . .

On Chicago’s South Side, an individual named Willie “Flukey” Stokes was one of crime’s “big wheels”. By the 1980s LE authorities considered him Chigaco’s largest drug supplier. At the time of “Flukey’s” death the DEA was preparing a case against him and expected to indict him within 6 months.

Stokes lived a lavish lifestyle; he was particularly fond of high-end cars and gambling. He reportedly dropped as much as $250,000 in a single night of gambling. He also reportedly spent $200,000 on a 30th Anniversary Party for himself and his spouse – in the early 1980s (that’s the equivalent of close to half a million today).

As happens to many in Stokes’ line of criminal enterprise, Stokes life had a violent end. Not long after midnight on 19 November 1986, Stokes and his driver were killed by two gunmen. One of them killed Stokes with two shotgun blasts at close range; the other killed his driver with multiple rounds from a 9mm pistol. A lady who was with Stokes at the time (not his wife) was not injured in the attack. She had the presence of mind to drop low, out of the line of fire, when the shooting started.

Stokes’ funeral was lavish; an estimated 7,000 viewed his body prior to interment. But “Flukey’s” funeral was much more subdued than that of his son (Willie Stokes, Jr, AKA “Wimp”) held some 20 months earlier.

“Wimp” was a case of “like father, like son”. Like his dad, Jr. was into high-end luxury cars and gambling. And also like his dad he reportedly gained his income from criminal activities including drug distribution.

He was also killed in a gangland-style shooting about 20 months before his father, in February 1984. And his father afterwards threw him a lavish funeral.

That funeral became a modern legend.

. . .

A description of Willie “Wimp” Stokes Jr.’s funeral was published in a column in the Austin American-Statesman in Austin, TX. Bill Carter – an Austin-area musician – read the column, turned to his partner (Ruth Ellsworth) and said, “That’s not a column – that’s a song.”

They immediately went to the studio. Their account says that in the 2 mile trip to the studio, they’d put the column to music.

The song was called “Willie the Wimp (and his Cadillac Coffin)”. Bill Carter’s version of the tune can be found here.

The song is quite factually accurate. “Wimp” was indeed buried in a Cadillac-motif coffin – complete with flashing headlights and a miniature vanity license plate reading “WIMP”. He was buried in a red suit, with diamond rings on his fingers, and $100 bills stuffed between his fingers.

Some of the lines in the lyrics were direct lifts from the column. This includes the line “he left like he lived, in a lively manner.” That line was a quote from “Wimp’s” mother, when she was interviewed in conjunction with the funeral.

. . .

Now, Bill Carter wasn’t exactly a household name; his tune didn’t get that much airplay. So that might have been the end of it except for a chance occurrence.

It seems that Jimmie Vaughn – the older brother of a guy named Stevie Ray Vaughn, and a fine guitarist himself – was in the studio when Bill Carter came in with the song. In fact, he did the guitar work on Bill Carter’s version of the song.

Jimmie told his brother about the song. Stevie loved the tune, and recorded it. It became one of his concert favorites. (For what it’s worth, Bill Carter also co-wrote another of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s famous tunes: “Crossfire”.)

This version comes from the 1988 Midtfyns Festival in Ridge, Denmark. While the sound on Stevie’s live album “Live Alive” might be a bit better, this version IMO is superior.

. . .

So there ya have it: a 1984 Chicago criminal’s funeral inspired one of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s most loved works. Who’d a thunk it? (smile)

OK, enough oddball musical history for today. Enjoy the WOT, everyone – and have a great weekend.

HMC Ret

Congratulations, 5th/77th FA. You da man again. Standing by to render assistance if required.

Everyone have a great Friday and above all, be well and be safe.

Had an arterial u/s of my legs Wednesday. Doc and I don’t know why my feel and legs swell. Labs are normal. I’m also having a veinous u/s of legs in a few weeks. They couldn’t do them on the same day b/c Medicare and TRICARE won’t pay for both procedures if they are done on the same day. Yeah, me too …

Be well and be safe.

Congratulations, again, 5th/77th FA.

Wilted Willy

Congrats 5th! You are the man this week! I was too busy making my birthday plans for today! HMC, I understand the health issues, I found out last week my cancer is back once again, and now I am also having heart problems! I have to go in for a bunch of tests on Tuesday, Oh Joy! I will pray for your fast recovery and good health! Take care all and have a great weekend!
I will raise a glass to all of you and the fallen as well!
Take care all,
Willy

Graybeard

Prayers for you WW, and HMC.

5th/77th FA

Tanks men. HMC & WW prayers offered up for your health concerns. They call it “practicing medicine” for a reason! I’ve dealt with more medicos in the last year than I did in the previous 65. BC/BS and I have both paid out a coupla bloody fortunes for the practice of medicine this past year, and I’m not totally out of the woods yet. The Company did tell me this week that I will be retired on a medical since I am no longer able to physically perform line construction work. Wasn’t ready to leave cause the $ was damn good. Will have to adjust to SS and my 401 $. Oh well.

Have a Happy Wilted Willy Day and I hope you have a bunch more! I’ll raise a glass in your Honor right now. CHEERS!

Wish I had one around here somewhere to celebrate a personal best.

Good post Hondo. Remember when all this came down and the controversy that was caused. No matter what all they buried him with, it stayed in that coffin as he went to his just reward.

“What profit a man to gain/own the world that loseth his Soul.” or words to that effect.

I have yet to see a hearse with either a trailer hitch or a luggage rack.

Thanks for the congrats folks; still trying for that elusive 3 pete on the Coveted FIRST in the TAH Friday Weekend Open Thread. Starting over…again!

So … since I missed out yet again on the coveted “first” in the WOT, I console myself – and you – with this week’s trivia column. Since it runs the week of April Fool’s, there’s a little game in this week’s fun. Enjoy! DID YOU KNOW…? Can you find the three false entries in this week’s April Fool column? By Commissioner Wretched This week, we celebrate the annual extravaganza of practical jokery known as April Fool’s Day. Quit looking at me that way. In honor of the annual event, I’m going to have a little game in the column this week. There are no prizes except the satisfaction of being able to ferret out the real from the fake, but it could give some of you a challenge nonetheless. The column this week features the usual slate of interesting, semi-interesting, and pretty useless trivia that it always contains, but with an added bonus: three of the items I’m listing here are totally fabricated. Made up. Fake as (insert your least-favorite news source here) stories about (insert your least-favorite politician’s name here). And no, this isn’t a lame attempt to gin up some e-mail response to the column – I get plenty of that already. But if you want to share your detective prowess, let me know which three you think are fake by sending a note to didyouknowcolumn@gmail.com. The correct answers will be given at the end of next week’s column. Got your Sherlock Holmes hat and pipe ready? Here’s the trivia … find the April Fool’s entries. Did you know … … those cute little “M”s on M&M candies actually mean something? They stand for the names of the two men who created the candy – Forrest C. Mars, Sr. (1904-1999) and Bruce Murrie (1909-1978). Mars’ father had founded his own candy company, while Murrie was the son of the president of Hershey’s. (I will leave it up to you to decide who each little “M” stands for.) … conqueror Genghis Khan (born Deluun Boldog, 1162-1227) has a huge lineage? Today, one out of every 200 people on… Read more »

Thank You again, CW, for your trivia post.

As far as your “Fake News/April Fool’s Challenge:

Am guessing the Kentucky Fried Chicken and Puppy Licking stories are Bogus. For my third guess, I am shooting for the Beer as a Breakfast Beverage for England as well, although I could see the possibility based on the conditions back then. Course, they could have consumed wine as a beverage of choice.

😉

Commissioner Wretched

You got one right. I won’t say which one, of course, because I want everybody else to play too.

AnotherPat

I like your “Spot the Fake News”, CW.

Keeps us on our toes.

Recommend you include one in your weekly posts.

Durn…now I have to wait another week to find out which Fake News I got right…

😉

Commissioner Wretched

I’d like to include a “fake” entry each week, but it would have to wait a while … I write the columns up to eight weeks in advance. The facts are not subject to editing unless I find I royally screwed up; I sometimes rewrite the introductions, though, when new or more important things happen.

AW1Ed

Remember reading during a London typhus outbreak, a scientist at the time noticed outbreaks all over the city, except near the beer breweries, where hardly a case was to be had. The reason of course was the brewers boiling the water in the making of the beer, and why drink water when there’s beer right here?

Of course, it would take time for folks to figure out the reason, all they knew was drinking beer was much safer than water from the wells.

Another, more recent case has been suspected of Naval Aircrew drinking beer at any hour of the day, because clocks are immaterial when living by the Flight Schedule.

I can neither confirm nor deny the statement above.
*grin*

rgr769

Beer and tea saved the English speaking world. Boiled water for tea kill the bugs and the brewing process did likewise. There were two shows on the History Channel that chronicled this. In one, the crew brewed beer using water from a duck pond. You should have seen the micro-brew afficiandos commenting on its wonderful taste, as they unsuspectingly sampled it in a pub. People drinking unboiled and untreated water in olden times frequently sickened and died from multiple waterborne ailments. That’s a fact, Jack.

AW1Ed

Makes sense, anything to kill the critters in the water.

Never did like hot tea all that much, but if it’s a choice between tea and swamp water, then there is no choice.

Skyjumper

“… conqueror Genghis Khan (born Deluun Boldog, 1162-1227) has a huge lineage? Today, one out of every 200 people on Earth can trace their ancestry directly back to the Mongolian emperor. (That is a huge number of people, you know.)”

Commissioner Wretched, did you contact Elizabeth Warren to let her know that she might be more Mongolian than Native American? (grin)

AnotherPat

Good one, Skyjumper!!!

😆

Commissioner Wretched

Pocahonky has more Mongolian than anything else!

5th/77th FA

Tanks CW. Love your work! KFC, Genghis Khan and George/Abe would be my guesses.

Commissioner Wretched

You also got one right.

rgr769

I vote the KFC story is bogus, cuz I don’t think a state can copyright its name. I’m goin with the Pepsi factoid as my second pick.

Commissioner Wretched

I’ll go ahead and confirm that the KFC story is one of the three fake ones. The other suggestions from you all are all correct (notwithstanding my error with Genghis Khan’s real name – that doesn’t make it a false story).
By the way, I didn’t say Kentucky copyrighted their name; I said they trademarked it, which (I believe) they legally could do.

Commissioner Wretched

Thanks, Hondo … seems a correction is in order. Much appreciated!

God what an entitled douchebag.

I took it upon myself as an E-8 to document my troops accomplishments each month, put them in for awards and decorations when deserved and generally put them first like at chow or parties or when we were doing exercises, made certain they had water, coffee, MREs or whatever food *always* before I ever ate.

Maybe *I’m* the one that’s a dick.

HMCS(FMF) ret

Nah, Chip… E-9(ret) Giordano sounds like a real work of art. You were doing what any real deal SNCO would have done to make sure that his/her troops were taken care of. I feel sorry for the staff in that office that had to deal with that Hell for as long as they did.

I dealt with a carbon copy of E-9(ret) Giordano back in the mid-90’s… dude was a real cocksucking, red assed baboon. Talk about a holy terror at CPO Mess meetings, everyone had a target on their back everytime something went wrong.

As a newly minted butter bar on a field exercise, I made the mistake of stepping into the chow line before all my men had their messkits filled from the mermites. The 1st SGT grabbed me by the sleeve, pulled me aside and schooled me on this concept. “Sir, leaders never eat until all the men have chow; that way, if there isn’t enough, you don’t eat. That is what leaders do in this outfit.” I never made that mistake again. CSM Ray Alegria was one hell of a soldier and NCO; am proud to say I served with him in the 509th.

Hello everyone. Here is a follow up to my I Love Toy Trains post on the previous WOT. This is the website for the company that produces those videos in case anybody is looking for potential gifts for their children or grandchildren. Also can be used to get ideas for train layouts. https://www.tmbv.com/products.asp?dept=1042

Thunderstixx

Miniature Railroading is a huge business in the US as well as worldwide.
General run of the mill locomotives run over a hundred bucks and the prices go way up from there.
I frequently watch videos of them on YouTube and enjoy them a ton.
It’s a labor of love and it doesn’t matter what you do with one, they are like Harley Davidsons, they are all different and each person loves their bike just the way it is, well, at least for a couple of days anyway…

Cameron Kingsley

Yep. I have seen them go into the $1,000 range. I got plans to start my own layout one day with O-gauge as I find N-scale too small and I want my trains to be easy to look at.

AW1Ed

Present! Back in my previous life as a shaggy-haired ski bum/ski technician, SRV was generally cranked LOUD in the shop, Willie the Wimp was a crowd favorite. When Stevie was killed, we asked the 1SG if we could have the day off in his honor. He said “No shit? Stevie’s dead?” then paused for about 10 seconds, and sent us to work. He was seriously considering it!

Hang in there, HMC Ret and WW. We got you covered.

Hondo: When it comes to music: Where in the world do you find these crazy stories? That picture of Wimp lying in his coffin reminds me of the classic movie “I’m Gonna Get You, Sucka” (a must see comedy).

NH Sparky: Be nice to the oldest today…another milestone for her. At least she had them done. Better now than having to deal with any future dental problems! 😊

Cameron Kingsley: Thank you for sharing the gift idea about I Love Toy Trains. Was running out of ideas for gifts for grandkids…and now I know.

sj: That picture of Uncle Joe and the Cop…Brain Bleach time!

Ex-PH2: Thank you again for sharing another great recipe…and the video of those classy women singing their hearts out.

Cameron Kingsley

Glad I could help. Had six of them on VHS when I was a kid. Also had them on dvd. If you do order them, I hope your grandkids enjoy them. Amazon Prime also has I love Toy Trains 1-3 available for streaming (they don’t have the other three), but I think getting the dvds will be better as on I Love Toy Trains 2 there was a piece of it cut out on the Amazon version.

Ya'll have a great weekend. Heavy rain forecast for our AO.

Interesting thread popped up in USMC Reddit a day or two ago.
The person was saying a ” Friend” of his was having to deal with backlash in his business of being a firearms instructor because he was falsely accused of Stolen Valor.
He went on to say that the person had did time in Special Forces then the Navy with SWCC. He said the person had documentation to prove they were legit and they had a Lawyer send a Cease and Desist letter to the website but it had no affect because the site was hosted outside the US.
He also said the side, although they knew the info was false refused to take it down” Because the story was getting a lot of traffic”
People were sympathizing with him and asked him who his friend was. He refused to post the name but he did link This Aint Hell.
After that he pretty much was pressured to link the story/ Name but he refused to do so.
He got called out so he removed the Original Post. Some whining dirtbag. The Guy that posted it has a post history as a Video Game nerd, but he mentioned he taught firearms as a side job…
