Great, Great, Great Grandma

1/64th? 1/512th? 1/1,024th? Native American?

Senator Elizabeth Warren has released a DNA test that provides “strong evidence” she had a Native American in her family tree dating back 6 to 10 generations, an unprecedented move by one of the top possible contenders for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president.

Warren, whose claims to Native American blood have been mocked by President Trump and other Republicans, provided the test results to the Globe on Sunday in an effort to defuse questions about her ancestry that have persisted for years. She planned an elaborate rollout Monday of the results as she aimed for widespread attention.

The analysis of Warren’s DNA was done by Carlos D. Bustamante, a Stanford University professor and expert in the field who won a 2010 MacArthur fellowship, also known as a genius grant, for his work on tracking population migration via DNA analysis. He concluded that “the vast majority” of Warren’s ancestry is European, but he added that “the results strongly support the existence of an unadmixed Native American ancestor.”

Bustamante calculated that Warren’s pure Native American ancestor appears in her family tree “in the range of 6-10 generations ago.” That timing fits Warren’s family lore, passed down during her Oklahoma upbringing, that her great-great-great-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, was at least partially Native American.

Blah, blah, blah blah, blah.

The full article is here: Warren releases results of DNA test

The Cherokee Nation was quick to respond to Pocahontas.

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. issued the following statement Monday in response to Senator Elizabeth Warren’s DNA test claiming Native Heritage:

“A DNA test is useless to determine tribal citizenship. Current DNA tests do not even distinguish whether a person’s ancestors were indigenous to North or South America,” Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said. “Sovereign tribal nations set their own legal requirements for citizenship, and while DNA tests can be used to determine lineage, such as paternity to an individual, it is not evidence for tribal affiliation. Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong. It makes a mockery out of DNA tests and its legitimate uses while also dishonoring legitimate tribal governments and their citizens, whose ancestors are well documented and whose heritage is proven. Senator Warren is undermining tribal interests with her continued claims of tribal heritage.”

The statement is here: Cherokee Nation

Perhaps Elizabeth (1/1,024th) Warren can get Ward Churchill to campaign for her in 2020.

Sorry, Liawatha. A Native American ancestor “6 to 10 generations back” does NOT support your specious claims of “Native American” ethnicity. It’s my understanding that most tribes won’t even talk to someone about membership unless they can demonstrate 1/16 or greater NA heritage.

26Limabeans

Not woo woo Indian. Not India Indian.
Not even from Indiana.
Give it up white girl.

NDHoosier

I live in Indiana. Do I win?

I’m from Indiana so I extra win.

As a child my great-grandmother used to tell me stories about how she used to go down to the NA village in what is now the town park when she was a little girl and play with the NA children.

Whats that hindu spot on her forehead? Is she a pakistaniwaka? lol what a freaking airheaded, dishonorable, lying, immoral, phony, DIRTBAG! imho

OWB

Can’t find it now, of course, but somebody somewhere said yesterday that she tested out with somewhere between less or similar amounts as the rest of the “white” population of this country.

Heard stories myself as a kid that every family with roots in the southwest US had mixed blood. It wasn’t viewed as a good or bad thing – just reality. Proving it was difficult. A lot of genealogy was done when the Indian population got oil rights in OK, for instance. Yep, the OK branch of my family was among them.

Hondo

Generally true in the US Southeast as well, I’d guess. Not all Native Americans were removed from the US Southeast due to the Indian Removal Act; in some areas (Mississippi in particular), those NA who didn’t move west were allowed to stay behind as citizens and individual landowners. Spouses in mixed marriages were also generally allowed to remain.

Supposedly, I have at least as much NA ancestry as does Liawatha here (great-great-great grandmother was allegedly a Native American). That and some cash will get me a cuppa coffee. (smile)

OWB

Figured as much re the southeast US and members of Tribal Nations.

I have been accused of being Cherokee myself. A friend and his mother swear that I look exactly like one of their ancestors who was full-blooded Cherokee. We just refer to each other as “cuz” now.

David

According to a report published using data from 400,000 23andMe samples, most white Americans have measurable amounts of other-group DNA. In the NE and SW, Native American is common. Black shows up a lot in the South. Latinos typically have up to 20% NA, and so on. So when she says she has NA ancestry, she is technically correct, but if you say “she is no more Native American than I am” you are both technically correct. But claiming to be Native American? No.

RGR 4-78

I heard bill Clinton was going to fill out a 23andme application, but when he read the instructions he realized it was not a dating site.

If nothing else it proves she was telling the truth about those stories.

The problem with Warren is that she’s a socialist at heart, there’s plenty of reasons to dislike her simply for her political views that would endanger the Republic.

She should never have brought it up in the first place as a claim of kinship with minority Native Americans. She’s a very caucasian looking woman with mostly not Native American blood in her veins, consequently her claims look like an attempt to appropriate a protected class she has no rightful claim to appropriate for her own benefit.

This all started when she refused to slam down the media report showing she was listed as a woman of color in the University propaganda regarding its educators. Like the stolen valor wienies who populate these pages she did nothing to set the record straight.

Which makes no sense because her academic record appears to be well beyond reproach with respect to her teaching ability and her students respect for her abilities.

But once again a perfectly decent record is damaged by the application of half truths and innuendoes.

Granny Warren will never be president, unless we are in some bizarre alternate universe where socialists get elected in the USA. Her ideas lack merit, and they lack any sense of economic theory like her pal Sanders.

She wants to use a class war to create a movement, hopefully the dumbasses she appeals to will realize Granny Warren is in the 1% she rails against with regularity.

Hondo

Other than the fact that she’s a “Communist-Lite”, there’s another issue with Warren. IMO she outright lied to gain an employment advantage.

She’s a lawyer. I cannot believe that she didn’t realize that her level of NA ancestry, unproven and with no tribal membership or other documentary evidence, did NOT qualify her as being qualified to claim NA ethnicity. Yet she knowingly placed that entry on employment application(s) nonetheless.

If she’ll lie about such a trivial matter as that – what else has she lied about, and what else is she lying about now?

David

Her taxes, evidently. Story last week said she overstated personal deductions by $50000.

Mason

Surprised she pays anything. Being as Native as she is, she could claim sovereign nation tax-free status. 😉

JacktheJarhead

Big Cheif Spreading Bull. But the Boston Globe will still continue to defend her no matter what. Even after all this, She is Working(?) for Massachusetts! Yeah, Right!

Just like she supports “Working People”. Even though as a Corporate Lawyer she tried and I think succeeded in screwing people out of their pensions. During the “Occupy Movement” she said that the dirty , filthy “Protestors” were “Her People”.

She is a liar, a fraud and hates the people she is supposed to represent.

Heck, I’m more Native American than Fauxcahontas is.

Family legend has it that when my Grandfather came to this country thru Ellis Island from Bavaria, he shook hands with a member of the New York Oneida tribe and in the process, some of the DNA entered his system which was than passed down to my mother which was then passed down to me. Guess that makes me second generation Native American?

LOL. Every day I find more reasons to like this guy.

Breaking it down:

Most folks whose ancestors arrived in the US through about the mid 19th century or so understand that there was likely some cross breeding in their background and are OK with it. Folks who families got here in the 20th century just don’t care.

The only people who care about this stuff are either just idly curious about their ancestry, a perfectly acceptable venture, OR they think they can use the information to their advantage, a not so acceptable outlook. Guess which group contains the most racists.

Graybeard

Saw a meme yesterday that pointed out that Warren is whiter than Ivory Soap.

Let’s all remind ourselves that somewhere, in some distant past, we are all related to emperors, kings, moguls, and whatever else takes your fancy.

Frankly, I can claim descent from Roger I, the 1st Emperor of Sicily through one (or more) of his wives (he kept a harem), and that throws off that old bag’s claim of heredity.

I’m part Sicilian. She ain’t got nothin’ on me!!!! Capisce??? Molto bene!!

I see that Stormy Daniels is once again in the news, this time for having her defamation law suit tossed by a judge. It’s a shame, really, that this poor woman should have her sterling reputation as a stripper, porn queen, and professional slut tarnished by being called a liar. To add insult to injury, the poor thing has been ordered to pay Trump’s considerable legal bills arising from the suit. She’s not getting any younger, you know. 1/64, the best case, is ~1.6%, unless I’m missing something. I think I’ve heard that we generally have more neanderthal in our DNA than that, and I’m no neanderthal.

That said, so what? She took advantage of a system, stupid enough to believe her, for personal advantage. That’s how I imagine Trump would play it if it were him, ‘I fooled some morons who didn’t have the nuts to call me out on it, and so what?–they’re the idiots.’

MrFace

“She’s already released 10 years worth of her tax returns and made her personnel files available to The Boston Globe, showing that ethnicity was not a factor in her rise in law.”

As opposed:

“During her academic career as a law professor, she had her ethnicity changed from white to Native American at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she taught from 1987 to 1995, and at Harvard University Law School, where she was a tenured faculty member starting in 1995. (She was a visiting professor at Harvard during the 1992-1993 academic year.)”

I am still hoping why we give a shit that a Saudi national was likely killed, dismembered, and taken out of the Saudi embassy in Turkey. I know that he was paid by the WaPo at times, but why is this a major issue? If we wanted to blame the Saudis for something, a better place to start would be OBL, a Saudi, and the Sept 11 terrorists attacks, most of whom were Saudis.

Now that Justice Kavanaugh is seated, the Socialist Democrats are pushing a court-packing scheme. It’s in its early stages but will catch fire the first time the court is renders a decision that is 5-4 and the Lefties on the court constitute the foursome. Although the Constitution does not specify the number of justices, the Judiciary Act of 1869 does. Prior to that, there were fewer than nine justices on the court. Packing the court would require that the Judiciary Act of 1869, itself just a statute, be amended or rescinded and replaced. That would take the House, The Senate, and a Presidential signature or, failing the last, a 2/3 vote to override. It’s no easy matter to accomplish but I have no doubt that with sufficient numbers of Democratic Socialists in Congress, it would be done. If it were to occur, we could fold up representative democracy’s tent immediately. Why would we need a Congress when, as happens from time-to-time with the Lefties on the court, they will set law as they see fit?

In a little rural area called Hodges, SC, (pop 201 as of 2010) a 17-year old was doing what teenagers in rural areas have done since the first road signs were installed: shooting holes in one. I checked satellite photos of the intersection where the target stood and it is an out-of-the-way place with thick stands of trees all around and no near manmade structures. So, the kid pops off a few rounds and then goes about doing whatever. He later learns that a 48-year old Veteran, home with his wife and kids, had been sitting on his porch when he keeled over, struck in the torso by a single round. He’s dead. He had 20 years in the USMC. The kid surrendered himself and is facing charges. How that round made it through the trees and found that man sitting on his porch I’ll never know.

In Travis county, Texas there sits a judge named Lipscombe who can be aptly described as the personification of the politicization of the judiciary. First, in protest of Justice Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court, he hung black bunting over the entranceway to his courtroom. Then, when that didn’t garner sufficient attention, I guess, he simply failed to appear in court, w/o giving notice that he was closing the doors. Texas is one big state and is as screwy as it is sane. As for the people who wanted their day in court and took off work to have it, or were sitting in jail hoping to be released, or were under subpoena to appear, tough shit. This was a protest and one selfish, highly politicized black-robed lawyer would have his way! He is up for re-election this year but, as luck would have it, he is unopposed. Judge Asshole.

The Massachusetts Historical Society sued Elizabeth Warren during her senate race for claiming that they had researched and verified her ancestry claim. She dropped off the paperwork but never paid the fee.

Also – US law involving race classification never went higher than 3rd generation (1/8th). Even if she was 4th generation (1/16th) she would be pushing it.

European Heraldry’s Seize Quartiers (a genealogy tree of gentility or nobility of 16/16ths) only goes back to the 4th generation. Trente-Deux Quartiers (a genealogy tree of 32/32ths), exceedingly rare, goes back 5 generations.
